Jonathan Nolan helped co-write The Dark Knight Trilogy with his brother Christopher Nolan and was a big reason why those movies were so good. On this week's Larry King Now, Nolan was asked if he'd ever go back and revisit The Dark Knight Trilogy. "I'd love to go back 20 years from now, I'd love to go back and revisit that character in a different part of my life", he replied.

Nolan also commented on Ben Affleck as Batman, saying that he has a great relationship with Warner Bros. and that he's a fantastic filmmaker and a phenomenal lead actor. Check out the full video interview above, Nolan talks a lot more about The Dark Knight and tells an incredible story about he and his brother wrote Heath Ledger's Joker character.

      Dammit, now I'm stoked to see it. Why wait 20 years, the time is perfect now!!! Overall fear of government is rising, crime is getting out of control, but the police seem to be just as dangerous as the criminals, etc.

      Can't happen either way because in the story you can't have superman in Nolan's world (or at least I don't think he'd like it) and outside of the film the Joker's gone. The only thing I could conceive is a spinoff regarding Blake, and Bruce and Selina make appearances because he gets into trouble or whatever. That is to say a Nolan Batman Beyond could to some extent be possible, TDKB I guess. But TDKReturns? Not happening.

      I understand Jonah saying it but I really, really hope they leave this trilogy alone, forever. And I think Chris Nolan will make sure they do.

    Sounds good on paper, but honestly The Dark Knight Trilogy works cause it's a self contained trilogy. No need to add to it, it's great as it is. I hope WB does push for Ben Affleck to direct the next set of Batman movies, and I hope they have a writer that's just as talented as Jonathan Nolan.

    That said, I love Nolan's work. Person of Interest is a fantastic show, and I hope he keeps making quality work.

      I agree and hopefully the next series of Batman movies is set in his later years like the Arkham games with Nightwing and Oracle and has villains like Killer Croc, Clayface, Hush, Hugo Strange, Solomon Grundy, The Calender Man etc. The problem with the last series was they made it too realistic which made it impossible to have a lot of Batman villains in the films. These movies should do the opposite and focus on the supernatural elements of the comics. A Batman movie with Killer Croc could easily be made like a horror movie.

        As much as the TDK Trilogy was a brilliant one imo and the latter even changed how I view batman permanently, at the core it's a Bruce Wayne trilogy, more than Batman films.

        I also disagree with the 'anyone can be batman' angle. What's missing in Nolan's take is his intellectual side: I like the highly intelligent Batman. He may be human, but he's still an exceptional individual. No one can be a better Batman than Bruce Wayne, or that's at least how I like it.

        I love Nolan's films to death, but it's a reduced take on Batman and definitely does not cover the entire character. It covers Batman as a psychological extent of Bruce Wayne and it does so best of all Batman stories I know. But I look forward to Snyder presenting us with a more ranged and intellectual Batman.

        (It has to be noted how ironic this is with regards to Nolan and Snyder's other works.)

          You clearly haven't met many rich people.

          EDIT: Let me correct that, cause I haven't either and I hate hypocrites. But your statement is still BS and any realistic person knows it. You have to be exceptionally physically fit to be Batman first of all which a lot of people just don't have the physical body for. You have to have a lot of talent for a lot of things as well as the intelligence to use them properly. A lot of those things aren't in your power at all. They're genetic traits mostly.

          A lot of kids' parents get killed everyday, but it's only Bruce that chooses to become Batman and succeeds in it. If anything, the money is the least important of it all.

          But whatever, I never got why people are hung up on this notion that anyone can be Batman if they get enough money. It's ridiculous. Do they really need to think that they could be Batman if somebody hands them a billion dollars? Then what's special about Batman, he'd essentially be something you can buy. It's BS.

          Anyone can uphold the ideal of Batman, but actually be THE Batman? No, only a few can pull that off.

      Person of Interest is a great show. I wish WB would make a Batman tv show like that. I love the movies but you really need a weekly show, like TAS, to be able to explore some of the more obscure but interesting characters.

    With Rocksteady ending their Arkham trilogy, I'd love to see the next epic Batman video game series be a continuation of The Dark Knight universe telling the story of John Blake's Batman. Throw a few bucks at J. Nolan and Goyer to write it, throw a few bucks at JGL and maybe Oldman to lend their voices. If you marry a great playing game with the The Dark Knight team I think it'd be a massive seller.

    Far more appropriate would be Burton and Keaton to team up for a TDKR-esque tale. Burton's style very much in sync w/ TDKR. (Well, when he was younger and there was some soul behind his style!)

      Oh yeah, the Burton thing would never happen. But in tone and in terms of the actor, B89 is the best fit for TDKR, no question about it in my mind.

      (Although I think TDKR was truly "high art" and so derivative works of it are necessarily going to lose the core. Not to mention, TDKR could not be literally translated for about a hundred different politically correct reasons: the cartoon was stark evidence of this.)

      This is one of Nolan's poorest directed scenes ever.

      I LOVE Nolan, and I mean I LOVE his work beyond any other director's. But TDKR's second act, especially this fight scene, was really badly directed. The geography is abysmal (the different shooting locations are horribly noticeable), and important aspects of the fight, like Batman actually using his gauntlet hook to rip off Bane's mask, are barely at all noticeable. Not to mention the fight is extremely stale. It pales in comparison to the excellent 'Breaking' fight scene, which one of the most iconic fight scenes I've seen in a long time.

      I genuinely applaud Nolan for his approach to the film, wanting to deliver a grand practical set, but this was apparently in over his head. It took me 2 years to come to terms with it, but this fight was a big disappointment to me, even though Bale and Hardy themselves were great in it.

        Also, pretty cool reworked version. The punches are overdone though. Not even Man of Steel has punches this exorbitantly loud.

        It's clear working under the scrutiny of location filming hindered this sequence !

        As you say the sewer fight wich is filmed on a set is a much more polished sequence !

          Yeah the sewer fight to me is one of the few scenes in TDKR that's as iconic as many from TDK were. Instant classic like many of the Joker scenes.

          In all honesty, TDKR up to and with that scene is brilliant imo. But as soon as he's in that pit, things really start to get sloppy left and right. Bums me out man.

          Thank fully the very last part where he's defeated Bane and boards the Bat picks it up again so the final note of the film is still fantastic. But the better part of the second half contains some of Nolan's weakest directing to date imo.

        I like how you used the young Bruce seeing his parents killed clip from BB and the after math of Rachel's death clip from TDK ! These two moments were the most pivotal moments from Bruce / Batmans life . And it's right you chose to use them as Bruce climbs out of his metaphorical and literal ' Pit of despair ' !

          Thanks man. It's honestly what I was expecting to happen. I kinda don't get the original scene, it's rushed and it shows those prisoners way too much, wasted screen time imo.

          I thought of it because it's just one more of those things were in TDKR, to me, Nolan's directing wasn't at its best.

    With the new direction DC is going in I think that it's good if Christopher Nolan and Jonathon Nolan do different roles in writing and directing together and apart depending on the movie. Sometimes they are co-writers, sometimes they're the main writers, sometimes they're the directors, or directors and writers depending and in many of those cases they can do it separately with different people in all instances. This can vary things, where I felt The Dark Knight Trilogy got too isolated and a lot of the same ideas kept repeating throughout all three movies. I would say Batman Begins was the most thought provoking, and the other two movies didn't have enough new stuff to really stand the test of time but they did bring in a lot of money so they're good at that. By them working with this much more expansive team, and then taking different roles depending this can add a lot more color to these movies. They're assisting with many different movies so they're working with a team vision as opposed to just their vision in ongoing movies, so they may not necessarily be in charge of an entire movie franchise, where they'll go into a movie franchise for one movie that had already began, then they can leave the movie franchise for the next movie and go to another, and they could still put work into the same movie franchise for a few movies. Like Michael Bay they could have just kept coasting with sequels that make a lot of money. Michael Bay is separating each movie more and more to where it's an entirely new movie. He could do that moreso as he gets cramped too since he's not working with a big team in a developing canon with many other team and character franchises. DC could bring in David Greenwalt as a rival to Joss Whedon since they've had great work together, and I'm not sure what percentage of the good writing of Angel was done by, same for Buffy. The final season of Angel was really good. The more people in the creative aspect the merrier.

      I'm pretty sure if they did do it, it would be something entirely their own. I only call it Beyond as a reference to what such a film might entail. But I'm sure if the Nolans do return they, like Frank Miller did with TDKReturns would create something wholly their own. And as for what people want to see... who's to say what people will want to see in 20 years? The superhero fad will probably be long over in 20 years. People WILL still remember The Dark Knight Trilogy though.

      Batman Beyond was very successful. It wasn't "cancelled". Dini/Timm decided to leave it and do JLU instead.

      It's continued in the the comics. It inspired an animated movie and at least two attempts at a live action one. It had a spinoff. A couple of video games. It continued on in JLU and Brave and the Bold. If people weren't interested in it, it wouldn't still be a thing, but it is. I mean, you don't hear people still asking for more "The Batman" but Batman Beyond remains a popular brand.

      Plus it had the best theme song of any Batman show. Yeah, I said it.
