The search for Gotham's Bruce Wayne is on

The majority of main characters for FOX's Gotham TV show have been cast. Ben McKenzie is Jim Gordon, Donal Logue is Harvey Bullock, and Alfred, The Penguin, Gordon's boss and Gordon's fiancé have been cast as well. The last major player to be cast is the young Bruce Wayne. FOX Chairman of Entertainment Kevin Reilly hopes that this young actor will grow up in front of the audience, because on the series finale he'll finally become Batman.

Yesterday the website Actor's Access posted a spec sheet for the role of Bruce Wayne in Gotham. Check out the description below:

11, son of Thomas and Martha Wayne. Dark haired, handsome, soulful, wise, strong willed. A kid with tragic gravitas... SERIES REGULAR

Bruce Wayne will have to be cast soon because Gotham begins shooting its first episode on March 17th in New York. Stay tuned to Batman News for all of the latest on FOX's upcoming TV show.

Its cool, but Smallville is embarassingly bad. I'd like this to be more like True Detective or Southland, grounded and beautifully shot with powerful performances rather than preteen fodder with cheap VFX. Smallville, was terrible.

I swear I saw someone from FOX say this was an indirect prequel to Affleck's Batman, the actors can be different because they will all be much younger.

Currently, I think Asa Butterfield from Ender's Game is my top pick.
Anyone that saw that movie must have noticed some similarities to Batman.
Actually I think he would be perfect as a Damian or young Jason Todd.
I don't know if he will grow up looking like Batman though...

    I think casting an older actor would be a bad decision.
    A young looking 15 or 16 year old could hit a growth spurt and end up looking 27 when he's supposed to be 12.
    They don't want another "Walt" situation.

If they cast Henry from Once Upon A Time I might honestly not watch Gotham.
I think he is the worst child actor on any show that I watch.
I know that's harsh and I would probably still watch, but I honestly think that casting decision would be a mistake.
I think Asa Butterfield is an excellent choice.
I also wouldn't mind if they cast Ty Simpkins from Iron Man 3.
If you dye his hair black I think he could play the role.

    In the 1940's Batman regularly carried a gun and Alfred was a wannabe detective. In the 1990's, Jason Todd was dead and all the characters were different ages then they must be in current comics.
    They made Captain America's sidekick black (Yes! Bye bye, whitey!), Nick Fury, black, and tons of other characters reflective of the new, more vibrant, less-White America.
    It is time for DC to do the same.

      It is their personal right. It is opinion. However, having an opinion don't deem something correct, incorrect or racist. While applying your logic it would be racist to not use the minority (which you claim is white children) as the new Bruce Wayne.       I have nothing against character race changes, but what I think studios should do is make live-action adaptations of ACTUAL, for example, black characters instead of being lazy and just switching a character's race. For example, instead of changing the race of Batman to black, for example, they should make instead a John Stewart Green Lantern movie (an ACTUAL black character). Or Marvel, they should make a Black Panther movie instead of changing Johnny Storm's race in the new FF movie. We need more live-action adaptation of actual race-diversity-characters.
      Some characters that could be used for this purpose:
      -Black Panther
      -Luke Cage (he's getting his own Netflix TV show, yay!)
      -John Stewart
      -Simon Baz (I don't like him, but still)
      -The new Ms. Marvel (the Muslim one)
      Those are just a few, but there are many more that could be used.

    Firstly, I think the best actors/actresses should be cast for roles, not people who have the same paint swatch as the source material.
    Having said that, I don't think Joe Q. Public is ready for a non-Caucasian Batman. I have yet to see any data to support your claims that Caucasians are the minority in America, even so, Batman/Wayne, Superman/Kent, Spider-man/Parker, Bond are all iconic characters and it'd be too risky for any studio to suddenly change an ethnicity.
    I think Colin Salmon would make an amazing James Bond, but I just don't see anyone will to gamble on changing Bond's ethnicity. Look at the crapstorm generated with a blonde Bond.
    Shaft is an iconic character I cannot see being recast by a Hispanic male. It just wouldn't be that accepted regardless of the actor.
    Look at some of DC's diversity change ups in New52; a gay Green Lantern that isn't Jordan, an African-American Flash that isn't Allen, & an African-American Batman that isn't Wayne. I think you can add that diversity without the high potential of a fallout by altering the iconic version of characters.
    And to be more accurate, media such as TV shows aren't US driven. They're globally driven. If characters should be altered to reflect majority, then they'll be a lot of Chinese actors/actresses getting work!

      You're right, the skin tone doesn't define him. The whole look of Superman defines him. A shaved headed, handlebar mustached, 40-ish Superman who's 5', wearing a green & orange suit with a Brooklyn accent doesn't define the character. It will, however, make him less recognizable. In fact, I'm certain there'd be more then just an uproar from comic book fans about it.

      I don't. I prefer watching people of my own race, as most people do. There is nothing wrong with Jews having a special affinity for Barbara Streisand and Neil Diamond, blacks for Kanye West and Shaft, and there's nothing wrong with the fact that Mexicans don't like 'Seinfeld'. It is 100% natural to prefer to watch people who look and feel like oneself.
      As for the new, non-White America, simply Google, "2011 Minority Births More than White" or "More Whites dying than being born". You will see countless links to the U.S. census and articles about it. (Not so much from the MSM, apart from the Wall Street Journal.)

      Since Batman has always been Caucasian, no, I wouldn't want to see anyone other then a Caucasian Batman. It has nothing to do with us having matching shades.
      I went to see Spawn & all 3 Blade movies the weekends they came out. Same as with the Sam Jackson Shaft.
      I was addicted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series. I watched each episode twice in the same week.
      I'm neither African-American or female. Sam Jackson is one of my favorite actors & it would seem the only things we share in common are our citizenship, male gender, & that we're human. My interests don't revolve around being carbon copies of myself. In fact, I enjoy the diversity. My wife & I are damn near opposites. It one of the things I like about our relationship.
      If we're going to get an African-American Batman, I'd rather they would just make it a Black Panther vehicle. Use the Christopher Priest stuff & give us a kickass character. I'll sign up for it today!

      Plus, last time I held my arm up against the off-white walls in my living room, I had no problems seeing it.

    You are wrong. Marvel didn't licence their properties to Fox and Sony. Fox, Sony, and other studios purchased the rights to Marvel properties when Marvel declared bankruptcy in the 90s.
    FOX grabbed X-men and Fantastic Four and everything related to those two properties. Sony won the Spiderman bidding. Disney didn't enter the mix until Paramount made a successful Iron Man, prompting Disney to purchase what was left of all Marvel properties not already owned by FOX or Sony.

      That's not how it went down. Fox doesn't own the rights to any of the Marvel properties; they have the license only to making movies about the Xmen and Fantastic Four, and even then it's only with a clause. Failure to comply with the stipulations on that clause means the license reverts back to Marvel, the actual owner of the property. Same deal with Sony.

      Don't bother; you won't find anything supporting that claim. Disney bought Marvel in 2009, and the Marvel cinematic universe was well underway by then, including the licensed properties. In any case, the fact they only own a limited license to the movie rights shows that Fox doesn't own Xmen or F4.

      Marvel boom/busted in the 90s and had to sell out all their properties which is why different studios own the rights, not because they chose to licence out but rather they were forced to sell.

I would think the best course of action for this series is to drop Bruce after season one, or don't have him as a series regular. Here's why:

1.) doesn't Bruce essentially start traveling the world to train with the masters of various fields shortly after his parents' death? You could stretch his time in Gotham post the incident, but for how long before he has 'kid adventures' in school

I can buy the Batman Begins/Ras training instead of traveling around the world, but Bruce is like Luke Skywalker (or technically the other way around), once his parents died there was nothing left for him in Gotham City.

2.) the more Bruce gets featured the more viewers could essentially start complaining they want to see his journey (like a Young Indiana Jones Chronicles) instead of Gordon's. I think Marvel's Agents of SHIELD suffers from his issue.

3.) Remember how cool Darth Vadar was until you found out he was a whiny brat growing up? We accepted the old man under the mask in RotJ, but the Prequel movies made him feel less of a threat.

Bruce could share that same fate if too much time is spent on his early, non-training years.

1 - I think most stories of Bruce's training take place in his late teens to early 20s. There are plenty of flashback stories to his younger days and he was still living in Gotham. I don't think him leaving right after the murder makes any sense. A - How would a 11 year old do that? B - It takes away from the Alfred relationship, because if Bruce leaves, Alfred didn't raise him.
2 - I'd say most of the complaints about Agents of Shield is that it's a Marvel show with zero superheroes. It's just a bunch of annoying pretty people in suits. Gotham has already confirmed several major characters to appear in this show.
3 - The difference, for me, is that we've already seen young Bruce Wayne a million times. Whether it's the multitude of stories in the books or the kid in Batman Begins, young Bruce Wayne is not new to anybody. It's not breaking down any walls or exposing something we don't already know. We know what to basically expect. We had no idea what we were getting into when it came to Darth Vader so it was a shock to the system. We've always known there was a Bruce Wayne behind Batman's mask and his story interests people. Absolutely nobody on the planet cared at all about finding out about the man behind Darth Vader's mask. He was Darth Vader and that was enough.

  1 - In my head the timeline between the death of Bruce's parents and Year One was something like this:
  Age 8 - 18ish: Bruce stays in Gotham until he finishes high school and in those years Alfred raises him like a son.
  Age 18 - 26ish: Bruce trains himself in various fields with various mentors around the world.
  Age 26 - 27: Returning to Gotham, hanging out with Alfred again. Waiting "for a sign", etc. Deciding what to do and stuff.
  Age 27-28: Batman's first year as a crime fighter and all that.
  2 - My complaints about Agents of SHIELD include terrible characters (good and bad) and terrible stories with terrible mysteries (How Coulson's alive).
  3 - You basically summed it up nicely.

    I've never heard stories about Bruce in high school (after his parents' death), graduating high school, or attending college as Bruce Wayne.
    Plus, I think the more Bruce interacts with people his own age & Alfred to some extent, the less isolated he becomes. Part of what drives Bruce to become Batman is that feeling of isolation & his inability to connect with people.
    I think the key to getting Bruce's story going is getting him out of Gotham & on his journey. It's why I think they should've gone with a Young Indiana Jones Chronicles type of show like the WB Network talked about doing before going with Batman Beyond & Birds of Prey.
    And ultimately, if this IS a Jim Gordon series, do they really need Bruce in the series that much?

      Okay, I gotcha now. I don't know, I think showcasing Bruce even for 10 minutes an episode opens the door for people to start thinking Ted Knight/Caddyshack; "well...we're waiting!" It'll detract from being Gordon's show.
      I feel like we'd get all this filler stuff with Bruce that would hinder the series. Or, we'll get all these foreshadowing stuff like Bruce solving mysteries with his friends, helping solve his parents' murder, I'm picturing a lot of James Murphy stuff like in the RoboCop TV series. That stuff always made me roll my eyes.

      There was a RoboCop TV series? Never heard about it. Must've been terrible.
      Back to the topic: I think that they initially wanted to do a Gordon show but I think now they're doing more of a show that's about the city. Not just Gordon. I don't know. I'll wait and see how they handle Bruce's side of things before I judge or anything. But you may have a point.

      There was a Robocop TV series AND a series of TV movies. Yes it was terrible. Robocop is something that never made sense as a franchise to me. That first movie was lightning in a bottle. Sure, you can make a decent action movie out of the concept, but you can never recapture the magic that made that first one what it was.

      Wow. Must've sucked for RoboCop fans. I liked the first movie and I agree about how you can't recapture the magic of the first movie and all that. I heard the reboot isn't as bad as people expected it to be (but it's not great or anything). I think I'll give it a try and see what happens. Commissioner Gordon and Batman are in it so that should be worth something :)

      You're right, I just researched this & the show's premise has altered to focus on Gordon AND Bruce. It doesn't make me feel any different about handling Bruce in the series.

      I can remember a lot of stories that showed him in school and in college. Particularly Tommy Elliot flashbacks. Also, he traveled the world to learn fighting and detecting stuff, but all his knowledge in stuff like chemistry or medicine came from schooling.

      Was the Tommy stuff before or after the Waynes' death? Any college stuff I've read was Bruce posing as someone else to take seminars, occasional classes, etc. Part of Bruce's training was making sure there was no way to connect Batman's training with Bruce Wayne's globe trotting.
      I've always read it more as Bruce studying more under masters of specific fields then in a classroom.

  Bruce is a billionaire, he can do whatever he wants. Who's to say Alfred didn't accompany him for the first several years abroad? Plus, wasn't Alfred also his nanny of sorts growing up before the death of his parents? If so, then a bond was created beforehand.
  I'll take your word on Agents of SHIELD. I thought it was a bad idea when I initially heard the premise.
  No one cared about what made Anakin into Darth Vadar? I can't be the only one who wanted to know what drove him to betray his mentor/friend & shun the Jedi ways to become a Sith Lord.

    I'm sure some people cared. But I think to most people Darth Vader worked best when he was just a faceless monster. Evil personified. It was already good enough to have him redeemed at the end. Even if the prequels were great movies and worked perfectly his mystique still would've been ruined because then Vader becomes a sympathetic creature. I don't want to feel sympathy for Vader when he's boarding that ship at the beginning of Ep 4, I just wanna be scared.

      Actually, that's why I've become a huge Shadow fan. His origins are shrouded in mystery. Even when you think you've got answers, there's doubt sprinkled into the story.

They should cast a kid who has a slight Eddie Munster quality to him... kind of Goth, with the pale skin, black nail polish, always dressed in black. Bruce should be the weird kid who doesn't talk much, never participates, but is always in the background watching...observing.

Fallen and I have already cast Mason Cook. He played Eddie in the Munsters reboot last year. I don't know why Fox is taking so long.

Apparently Fox has the rights to all Batman affiliated characters except for grown-up Bruce Wayne as Batman. I hope the the kid they get is good.

  The producers will indeed be able to use all Batman characters on the show for as long as it is still on the air. Except for of course actually Batman appearing.
