In a new interview with Tate, Dark Knight Trilogy director Christoper Nolan reveals how paintings by Francis Bacon inspired the Joker's smeared make-up in The Dark Knight. Nolan talks about his longstanding fascination for Bacon's work, and why, when words fail him, he turns to art to help shape his creative vision.

I love seeing Nolan interviews. He always seems to have a very deep idea behind everything he does. Awesome video.
There are Bacon references all over Nolan's films, Inception in particular which just outright features one of his paintings. What has really always interested me though is the fact that the Joker's video in TDK when he taunts the fake Batman is framed to be a clear reference to Bacon's Figure With Meat. This painting was the painting that the Joker saved from being vandalized in Burton's first Batman film. Check it out.

Kind of funny considering that scene in Burton's Batman where Joker stops Bob from cutting a Bacon piece.
Yeah it´s funny to see how influential Batman 89 turned out to be to Nolan´s version. I don´t believe in coincidences...

Sorry, I'm not sure. It must be some kind of behind-the-scenes/art book for Batman Begins, but I can't seem to find it by searching online.
If you´re referring to the thicker one it´s The Art and Making of The Dark Knight Trilogy, I have it here, amazing book. The one with Batman Begins cover is The Official Movie Guide.
This is a great. Really gives you a window into how Nolan's mind works. I can't imagine overrated directors like Michael Bay or JJ Abrams finding inspiration in the works of Francis Bacon. Nolan comes across as a true artist or at least someone who understands art. These other guys don't strike me as being deep thinkers. Certainly explains why their movies seem so shallow.
Nolan is a fan of Bay's movies.

So what if he's a fan. The article doesn't explain why. For all we know, he may just like the look of Bay's movies or how Bay sets up action scenes. It doesn't necessarily mean he thinks Bay is a good director or that his movies have any artistic value.
I'm not saying anything. I agree that he probably just likes them for their big action scenes. I just thought it was interesting that he enjoys them at all. I think there's a little bit of Bay's style in some of Nolan's action scenes. The whole "Okay, that's not good!" is like something out of a Bay movie. Nolan definitely is more intelligent and artistic when it comes to film making.
