on Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale may not return for 'Justice League' after all

The internet exploded last month when word came out that Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale were possibly returning in the upcoming Justice League movie. El Mayimbe of Latino Review is back... but this time it's bad news.

Unfortunately in Hollywood, deals don't always come through. Warner Bros. definitely wanted to bring Christopher Nolan back to produce Justice League and they were trying to get Christian Bale to reprise his role as Batman too. El Mayimbe stopped by the Schmoes Knows Movies podcast this evening to give us an update.

According to El Mayimbe, Warner Bros. is having trouble getting Christopher Nolan on board. Nolan doesn't want Justice League to mess with the story he created for The Dark Knight trilogy. There's even some resistance about Superman from this summer's Man of Steel appearing in Justice League. As it stands now, Warner Bros. is more likely to release a sequel to Man of Steel... Justice League is going to be pushed back a bit. As always, things could change but that's the latest on Warner Bros. superhero team-up movie.

Update 04/05/13: I've embedded the Schmoes Knows Movies podcast below so you can hear it all from El Mayimbe himself. How do you feel about this news? Let me know in the comments below.

Nolan is right... he set up rules in his "Dark Knight" trilogy which centered on a world without magically powered beings or aliens and Superman should exist in his own universe. I don't know why everyone wants a "Justice League" movie just because of Marvel's success with "Avengers". There really are no compelling characters in the Justice League beyond Superman and Batman and possibly Wonder Woman, whereas the Avengers had much more interesting and developed characters brought together. I'd rather see more individual Batman and Superman films than fanboys circle jerking over a "Justice League" project...

The Justice League does have compelling characters. It would be awfully wrong to trash it in a comparison against the Avengers. The problem is that DC doesn't maintain universe continuity half as well as Marvel does, so putting superheroes together for long story arcs generally results in super-complicated storylines like Final Crisis which a very few people who aren't serious fans can appreciate.
The same issue is now coming up in their Filmverse. No one can imagine the Amazon and General Zod in Nolan's Batman, while Marvel's Filmverse is more or less uniform.

They did modernize DC if the DC writers would just look at the write DC storyarchs in the comic books and animated films/shows made of them. And the DC videogames have been modernized too.

Now why would anyone think that? In what universe exactly are Hawk eye, black widow and captain america more compelling than flash, wonder woman and Martian Manhunter? The Avengers characters got a great treatment in the Avengers. Before that there was no one compelling enough except Iron Man. The same can be done with the Justice League movie in the right hands and maybe even better. Why are people always negative about going out of the comfort zones? As far as separate universes are concerned, I agree to an extent. But if the story is well developed and the movie is given a great treatment, It can still work out extremely well. No one thought Batman could be given that kind of treatment before Nolan came along, did they? Its not like the Nolan universe is 100% realistic..

for the record, before the movies, Hawkeye and Black Widow & Nick Fury were B-list characters at the most. Even Iron Man was a borderline A/B list. JLA characters are way more compeling

Where did you get your data? Just asking - is this another one of your AWESOME opinions, or have you broken the fanboy mold and gone and done actual research on the popularity of all comic book characters? I would love to know how YOU KNOW that Iron Man was a borderline A/B list character and the majority of all people consider JLA characters to be more compelling than any others. Or you could just punch yourself in the balls because your a fucking idiot.

Well after running a comic book store for 15+ years and having 40+ years reading comics, it is my opinion that sales for Hawkeye, Black Widow and S.H.I.E.L.D were low and not many people knew of those characters. Other than Tony Stark's bout with alcoholism, not very many people knew the character well enough to generate high sales. Sure the Avengers comic was holding its own, but nothing compaired to X-Men or JLA. Once Marvel started the Ultimate line did Nick Fury become popular like he was back in the 70's.

So unless you want to punch yourself in the balls for thinking you know everything, do a little research first. Otherwise be quite cause the adults are talking

Each of the Ironman movies and the Avengers movies have made a lot more than any of the X-Men and X-Men related movies. And Ironman is just one superhero to X-Men's team of superheros. I think an X-Men movie can be written much better, but First Class was good, Origins was good, and Days of the Future Past might be good but can't say until I see it, I think it's made by the same people that made First Class.

It also depends on the time period of comic books you speak of these characters. Plus they've been getting better writing in animated movies and other sources. It was cool how they brought in a secret sect of the Government to put together the Avengers. Nick Fury has had a lot of good comic book writings but there's just as many bad stories for each character as there are good stories so it's easy for anyone to develop a bad opinion of any character depending on what stories they've read or what they've watched. You can also better relate to the story because you see the connection between humans, mutants, and superheroes. Also how humans who don't have any powers would interact with them. The power is in the person, not in their powers.

You can also do a lot with Flash and Green Lantern who have been modernized in the comic books. Lobo wouldn't be apart of the team but they could have him later fight against them, then fight for them, and also interact with a few of the individual team members. Superboy, Steel, and Supergirl would also be good characters who were also modernized in the Reign of Supermen. Cyborg, Shazam (I'd add more to his persona as he's too dull), Wonderwoman (not as good a character), and Aquaman (it depends how you use him) would also be other characters that can be included in the team. I don't really care for Martian Manhunter but his extraterrestrial origins might be something different for the team. Green Arrow is retarded and a copy of Hawkeye, don't use him. Don't use any of the characters that copy Marvel's characters. Atom copies Antman/Wasp but Captain Atom (I think he's a different character, is original but he might not be unique enough though his physical appearance looks cool). Metamorpho is neat. Booster Gold (He's from the 25th century and went back in time) is very interesting. Supernova could be a good character and replaces several other superheroes. There's also Powergirl (she's from an alternate reality, Supergirl is a lot more interesting of the two). You have Teen Titans (some of their teams have been original) and when they grow up to be older they become Titans or split while the Teen Titans get new members. There's several different Justice League characters from several different timelines and several different sub-teams of the Justice League group you can take from, and there's lots of interesting original characters with more interesting backgrounds and personalities depending on who you choose as there's 50 to 100 different past and present team members of the different team and sub-teams.

Hawkeye was a much better concept overall and makes Green Arrow look like junk. Green Arrow is really stupid and fans would perceive him as a Hawkeye clone in the Justice League movies. Also it would make the Justice League movie look bad because it looks like they're copying the Avengers. Green Arrow's personality and abilities are really weak. He's the worst Superhero imaginable. Justice League wants to be as original as possible which is easier, and they can easily go beyond fan's expectations. But I can instantaneously explain any bad ideas for Justice League and why if I hear about them. If they continue Nolan's Batman Universe I can see John Blake as Nightwing but they have to take away that white trash stupid oblivious cop persona he had in TDKR. Joseph Gordon Levitt would make a great Nightwing (who temporarily took the Batman mantel when Batman was out of commission for a short period) as Nightwing is one of the most popular DC characters. They would need to go through Nightwing's best stories to do good writing for him and capture his persona. So he may temporarily be Batman, and he'll temporarily be Robin until he takes the Nightwing persona. He could skip the Robin part, but it makes Nightwing more interesting if he temporarily did Robin, evolved to Nightwing, and also temporarily did Batman for some point.

Joker went to prison or the Arkhum mental Asylum. I would think he went to prison for the people's he's killed. It could be his first time in prison so he'd be a completely different person when he comes out of prison. I doubt it, he must have been in prison a lot. I would like a change in Joker's personality as I didn't think he was that great in TDK, but the actor's performance was great. I just didn't like his writing. I think another actor could do a really good Joker, I'd make him a lot more evil, a lot stronger, a lot more creative, and a lot more dangerous. There's been other films where actors have been replaced for the bad guy and their performances were still really good, they did the bad guy differently though. If it's done really good fans will like it.

There is really no need for a Justice League movie as of this time, in my opinion. DC is roughly where Marvel was in 2004 when Spider-man 2 was released -- a single, strong franchise that gave Marvel credibility in taking their characters into movies. DC has that with Batman, and soon Superman. I think a Batman/Superman film IS essential and critical in order to bridge the gap between these individual franchises and the Justice League proper.

It's a double-edged sword. Would it be great to have Nolan on board and Bale back in the Batsuit? Obviously. But it also makes sense that Nolan would want The Dark Knight Trilogy untouched. He spent a decade of his life putting that together with his team, and they got it the way they wanted. Hopefully in the end we get another great Batman movie, with Nolan/Bale on board or not.

There's only limitations in vision, not in Bale's acting and performance. They can add a lot more facets to Batman and Bale can portray them if they just direct it in the movie. I can't imagine why the director is so blind when there's so much to do with Bale and his Batman. I'd make it to where he's a lot more idealistic and comes up with a lot more ideas with his business and his crime fighting. I'd focus more on his genius intelligence like in the comic books, his spiritual abilities which he developed with monks who channeled higher beings outside of the League of Assassins, and how he was also learning about extraterrestrial technology when he joined Justice League. The Batman in the comics was very well-rounded.

They haven't done it but I'd also write the aspect of Bale where he's learning to be more human since he has had the disconnection due to the death of his parents and the lack of relationships in his life. This can also be apart of when he recruits his Bat team, and also with the Justice League who also notice he's disconnected which affects his ability as a member of the Justice League since he keeps a distance with himself to the team while he's apart of them.

I would say do a soft-reboot/alternative sequel in which supporting actors can return and the origins for bats and the tone is set up already. Keep Batman Begins and The Dark Knight canon but then go an alternative route: Ra's is revealed to be immortal via a grounded version of Lazarus Pit (hey who knows, maybe the vapors that keep Bane's pain away is a diluted compound from the Lazarus Pit) who is running everything from the Shadows. Begins offers the best told origin story film so far where the tone in that film is a nice balance between grounded relatability and some comic book mysticism. The Dark Knight escalate the thematic layer of the Batman story and character and a much more comic book graphic novel essence while juxtaposed in a grounded crime drama perspective (everything is much more improbable in the second film).

The Dark Knight Rises was good and successful but it also considered by many weaker than the first two. Suitable ending though. But that is the point, the film is an ending. Some may argue it left doors open but those doors were only thematic and not be seen as legitimate openings for continuation. Treat the Dark Knight Rises as the film that happened by now we are watching the alternative. This happens all the time in other franchises and honestly not so different from a reboot. Only under this direction, the plot has already been begun and could be taken in a different approach. Imagine a re-imagined TDKR in which the film was simultaneously a trilogy book-end but also lays "legitimate clues for the DC universe" such as Luthor will help rebuild Gotham, Bane was sent by Ra's and Talia in order to give Luthor political weight etc.

Cast members may return including Tom Hardy and Anne Hathaway, who can all offer familiar yet slightly different take of their character- Liam Neeson for Ra's . We can see Batman truly be hunted while also trying to form a League to counteract Ra's League. The Joker would not have to return so soon. We do not have to see another origin story. Robin will be Dick, Jason, Tim or whatever. Talia will be Talia and Bane will have his revenge (metaphorically speaking). If Bale and Nolan are down to return, perfect. If not, a full reboot is not necessary. I mean the tone of Man of Steel trailers almost is comparable to Batman Begins. I mean if Batman Forever could be a loose sequel/reboot, why not this. Fans will still have the trilogy of films but we see a new depiction of Bats that expands rather than start over.

    1. Daniel Christopher Holt Avatar

Ra's has manifested himself into his body even after his physical body was completed destroyed in the comic books. I would keep the venom to the area of Bane's prison as that could also open up a storyline link to Bane's dad, King Snake, and the stronger venom that is made. But that would be an interesting angle if the venome was the liquid from the lazarus pit. There's more than one Lazarus Pit. I don't know if there's only a very limited amount of liquid in the Lazarus Pit for them to make it like venom. If these Lazarus Pits are a special liquid that happens as a natural results of a chemical reaction due to their location, or if it's something Ra's knows how to replicate.

That does sound like it would give Batman a much greater involvement to Justice League as Lex Luthor utilizes some of Batman's greatest foes for a much bigger conspiracy. But Ra's has always worked for himself while he has recruited help before such as recruiting Bane. Ra's plans to kill off the most of the world's population off with the Legacy Virus and then take over the world. But he may share this plan with Lex Luthor or Lex Luthor tries to stop him when he finds out about this plan.

I think Hollywood has built up both of these characters too much for them to share the spotlight. In theory, it works. In reality it seems to be a disaster. Nolan needs to get out of his tunnel vision of Batman and properly write him into a Justice League movie. It's Bruce Wayne's genius, not brawn, that makes him an effective member of the Justice League and as Batman on his own, and with his own team that he's developed.

Batman can also become a lot stronger as Bale was a much better fighter and had better manueverability in Equilibrium. Also there's guys in real life that could mop the floor with Nolan's Batman in everyway and in every feat that Batman did such as Bruce Lee in his later years after he healed from his broken back. Bruce Lee can play ping pong with nunchuks against world pros. Bruce Lee is 135 pounds when he was in his greatest fighting strength. Bruce Lee can 1 inch punch a 235 pound man and cause the guy to fly 15 feet away. Bruce Lee kicked a 300 pound punching bag to the ceiling and trained with a 500 pound punching bag. Not if you're trying to start a story line in which both characters initiate a working relationship together. You tell me if Batman is suppose to be older that Superman in the JLA series as it is. Visually it will just confuse things for the film market and narrative-wise. It just doesn't work that way in film. I'm sure you can think of your own examples from other material.

Iron Man's fighting is done with CGI and that is not Downey behind that mask. Just coding. Sherlock Holmes is mostly done with camera and editing effects. Not the same.

If WB wants to keep Nolan/Bale for a team-up movie to rival The Avengers, it'd be better to follow up DKR with a Batman, Inc type story featuring Batman, Nightwing, Catwoman, etc. Talia totally survived DKR, right? I can't imagine Nolan would ever delve into the Lazarus Pit (though that's what the prison in DKR represented on a humanistic Nolanverse level, right?) I was more alluding to the fact that Talia's "death" scene in DKR was so underwhelming that it had to have been her just playing dead.

It was very disappointing how they went nowhere with Talia when they were just building up to a really good plot. It appeared she was angry with him but also kept him alive and set up the events to challenge him such as breaking his back, setting him up to meet a guy that can heal broken backs, and getting him to climb out of that prison like she did. I saw it that she was going to live, had his kid, and was planning to trap him and keep him alive to get him to marry her. She was conditioning him. She tried this in the comic books too. She didn't kill Batman when she had the chance, and instead she stabbed him but it wasn't a death wound to put him down for a little bit. Talia was a much better fighter in the comic books than she was in the movie.

They're both different. I don't think it would have taken from Bane. But Bane was a lot stronger in the comic books. Bane is really good at planning so both him and Talia are good in their own ways. But Talia would have to look really tough instead of making Bane look weak by making talia kind of weak. She was very effective in the comic books. Bane was out in the open so it made him look really weak when Catwoman shot him, and wouldn't he have thick bullet proof clothes? Batman should have had a much easier time taking that version of Bane down. I can envision Bane as a lot more effective a fighter than what the movie made him out to be, even with the same actor. Bane didn't leave himself open like that in the comic books. Both Talia and Bane grew up in very unique childhoods to mold them to be that way. Talia is like an amazonian. Bane was a lot better of a fighter in the comic books, even before he got the venom. The fight scenes between Bane and Batman were weak. Bane was slow and just had strength, but in the comic books he's also a very good martial artist and extremely strong. He's a fast hard hitter. I wonder where the budget for that movie went as the special effects were almost non-existent and the movie wasn't that impressive, same for The Dark Knight which are both overrated films. Batman Begins didn't have as big a budget but the special effects were a lot more impressive. Why would Batman keep helping and trusting Catwoman with the types of things she was doing, yeah right. That version of Catwoman isn't trustworthy at all.

I would like to think Talia didn't die and had Bruce Wayne's kid after she had sex with him in TDKR or she could have had sex with Bruce Wayne years ago and kept her child birth a secret to him as Batman would otherwise have to be 40 years old before Damien Wayne reaches 10 years old.

Oh, this is really bad news.. Its better reboot Batman anyway, at least Nolan's Bats still keep untouched.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes over the mantle of Batman... I thought this was a done deal, in terms of the story set up in the Dark Knight Rises.

although its sad ,Nolan has a point. And bringing Bale back will completely dismantle the end of TDKR.
But with so many postponements i dont think Justice League will make any impact ,it might just fizzle like Green Lantern.

meh i really don't know why comcibook fanboys hate Christopher Nolan more than anything but i prefer a true filmaker genius like Mr.Nolan to involve in Justice League or any other DC movies rather than someone like geoff johns. comicbook fanboys bash Nolan for giving the world a great batman trilogy and the upcoming MOS yet they praise geoff johns who involved in that god awful GL movie
