I've received a lot of emails and Tweets about a rumor that's been going around the internet concerning a 30 minute extended director's cut of The Dark Knight Rises being included on the Blu-ray/DVD release. I looked into it and can confirm that there will NOT be an extended version of The Dark Knight Rises released in the next few months. Judging by Christopher Nolan's track record it's very unlikely we'll even see any delete scenes, such as the one about Bane's backstory that was revealed last month. Christopher Nolan likes to preserve as much "movie magic" as possible, and the special features on his Blu-rays and DVDs suffer because of it. Perhaps in a few years down the road Warner Bros. will release a trilogy box set with lots of behind the scenes footage that Nolan didn't want released. For now, we have the epic 2 hour and 45 minute conclusion to Nolan's Batman trilogy to look forward to when it's released later this year. Don't expect to see anything more.

        Dylan_dog. You are a joke. There are so many things wrong with what you have said, so I'll just list them: 1. You are forgetting everyone is welcome to their own opinion. 2. In your own statement you say, "batman begins was only good BATMAN film" and then literally say, "Dark Knight was a "good film"... 3. If you honestly have detracted from the franchise after the first film, what are you doing on batman-news? 4. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the whole trilogy is over 85%. That's an accumulation of professional film critic opinions. 5. It's Batman so shut the fuck up. Lawyered.

        I'm sorry you feel that way, but I have to disagree, mate. You feel a certain way, and I feel a certain way, and chances are we won't sway each other, which is okay by me. I realize that Nolan's vision of Bruce and the Gotham he hails from isn't for everyone, but there's a way to voice your opinion.
        Calling Nolan an over-pretentious prick was, for lack of better words, rude. Actually, it's presumptuous more than anything. Personally--as a film major--I look up to Nolan as being one of the more notable Hollywood directors that can make a "popcorn" or "blockbuster" movie, but add substance (and little to no CGI) to it. And from all the interviews I've seen him in, he seems humble as all hell. Though there might be a small chance, I don't think he's done anything in his career that has left the impression on people that he's pretentious, or an asshole, or whatever. Again, you may not like his directing style, his take on the Dark Knight, or even the movies that he's written/produced/directed, but no need to be rude or make assumptions.
        And while you might not think Nolan's trilogy is Batman-centric, Nolan brought out the kid in me ever since "Begins" came out. I grew up with Tim Burton's 1989 rendition of Batman, the Adam West reruns, and of course, THE Animated Series. And even squaring off against villains that were more farfetched than others, I personally always loved Batman because I always thought he could exist in the real world. But that didn't take away my enjoyment from anything Batman-related that wasn't like Nolan's vision (except maybe "Batman & Robin" though I can still stand to watch that one if I'm in a good enough mood, haha).
        Getting back to the subject matter at hand, I'm bummed there won't be a "Director's Cut," though I did fully expect that there wouldn't be one, just with Nolan's track record. It's a shame if it is true that they have stuff left on the cutting room floor, I wouldn't mind seeing a longer cut of TDKR at all. I'll keep my fingers crossed for any deleted scenes, though!

the thing is this is the first time we actually know there are unreleased footage otherwise previously Nolan himself said he pretty much used all of the shot footage. So although I'm not "expecting", I do however still "hope" by some miracle it happens. Would be no surprise if there is no EC but heck everyone will be mind blown as I said if that "miracle" happens

  Totally agree. TDK had like 1-2 scenes missing and it wasn't anything major, it's like the Joker leaving the party, the tumbler leaving the batcave, etc.
  But here, it's another story. A true backstory to Bane would definitely improve the movie

        How would they do that? The entire point of giving out Bane's backstory piece by piece was to hide the reveal of Talia. If they added in Bane's backstory it would have to be inserted AFTER that reveal which means at the point where the action and suspense should be ramping up to it's apex, we're going to cut away to a pointless 10 minute re-explanation of Bane's origin that has already been explained throughout the previous 2 and a half hours.
        We know Bane was born in the prison, we know his was injured while helping Talia escape, we know his face surgery was botched by the prison doctor, we know Ra's rescued him from the prison and brought him into the League of Shadows, trained him, gave him the mask that pumps anesthetic to stop his chronic face pain and that he then got kicked out of the League by Ra's for being too damn hardcore. Exactly what part of his origin is missing that we need 10 more minutes of exposition?
        I would LOVE to see the footage shot for it, but I don't see why it should be in the movie. And I figure Nolan probably knows what his movie needs and doesn't need more than some message board posters who haven't even seen the footage.

    That "backstory" is just a flashback of him training with the League of Shadows. That and and some extended dialog is all that missing from TDKR. At the most it's probably 10 minutes. (you can see what's missing in the published script) As much as it would be cool to see those scenes..what you see in the screen is Nolan's finished work.
    He's just not he kind of artist that wants people to see the scraps left over on the studio floor.

      The reason we haven't got the 30 +minutes is due to the fact that the 70mm IMAX prints only can have 165-minute runtime. If you check some of the trailers you'll see clips that aren't in the movie. There's some Alfred dialog, a tumbler shot, a catwoman shot, a shot of bruce wayne entering miranda's charity party and now we KNOW for a fact that Bane's origin story is left out and you tell me it's just left overs? You should yell out "I WANT MY DIRECTOR'S CUT". Can you really tell me that you don't want some more Bane action?

        I'm telling you that there isn't 30 minutes of extra footage in the released script. 10-15 minutes tops. maybe. Depending on the space between the dialog. Heck the Bane training scene is given one line of description in Talia's dialog. And yes; I'm sure some of those bits were cut out due to time constraints; but with even with those time constraints what you see is what Nolan decided to leave in. It's the director's cut. I'm sure that if Nolan felt those cuts were ruining his vision he would put them back.
        Again..would be nice to see these scenes in; but it's Nolan's decision. If he doesn't he still gave us 165 minutes of footage (versus 10 minutes of missing stuff). Sounds like a great deal.

The difference between this film and other films Nolan has done is that he actually had a time limit on this movie as IMAX movies can't be longer than 3 hours. So a director's cut or something like that could very well happen.

  Exactly. It's no coincidence that the limit for an IMAX reel is 2h45m, and TDKR is...2h45m.
  This provides a valid reason for Mr. Nolan, who otherwise is opposed to deleted scenes/director's cuts (he thinks that it ruins continuity and is disrespectful of actors) to provide an extended cut.

Nolan is a genius but if he isn't doing any more Batman movies he needs to make this shit available to the dedicated fan base. its senseless to hold something like that back unless u plan on building on the story more.

It's always good when we get some extra Batman, but even if there is no extra footage, I don't care. Nolan gave me everything I need from this movie and it never ceases to taunt me. Waiting impatiently for the DVD and Blu-ray release.

I'm sorry but I'm gonna need more than "I looked into it" to know if you're right. I know Nolan doesn't really like doing this sort of thing, but I feel like this could be the exception, because of all the stuff that was in the script that wasn't in the final film. Plus, it's a very good possibility that the studio didn't wan't the film to be over 3 hours, so he HAD to cut stuff he may not have wanted to. So in this case, the final cut may not be the director's cut.

If he doesn't include the missing Bane scenes and some great lines from Bane and Alfred in the movie that we saw on the trailer and read on shooting script (that you can really feel are missing)...he could at least change the order of the ridiculous editing mistake in the "Where's Miranda Tate?" fiasco.

WTF, Nolan. As much as I love his movies, The Dark Knight Rises was my least favorite. So many things going on. Bane was way too overhyped as a villain and we barely knew anything about him. I'm gonna need more than a prisoner simply saying "the mask keeps his pain at bay." this is Nolan's send off to the batman trilogy. If he can't offer that extra footage to his fans, that's surely disappointing. I'm sure the footage that we didn't see can offer so much more to the story and vision Nolan wanted. Screw IMAX limitations. Make it happen Nolan. We are your fans and would sit through an 8 hour batman movie if need be.

      Really? Then why do you keep claiming that the cut footage would add more to Nolan's vision? Your words. You haven't even seen the footage. You don't know what it is. Yet, you say "I'm sure the footage that we didn't see can offer so much more to the story and vision Nolan wanted." That certainly implies that you think you know what Nolan's vision needs and doesn't need better than Nolan does. I think after seeing Nolan's entire body of work I have faith that he knows what his movies need and don't need. Even with the movies his that I did not like, Inception for one, I would never be so egotistical to think that I could tell him how to fix it.

  That's your opinion and I won't try to change it. I will say that after watching it once I might of agreed. But just like with TDK, after multiple viewings I started to notice all the little nuances that made me appreciate the movie more and actually like it as much as TDK.
  As far as the plot holes, as many articles and discussion threads all over the internet have pointed out, with a little thinking and imagination, there are very few if any. And as far as the happy ending goes, I thought it ended the trilogy well. Personally if Nolan had taken the route many thought he might and killed off Bruce Wayne, personally I would not have been as happy with the conclusion.

  It was the end of Bruce Wayne´s story arch what ending where you expecting? Batman on top of the building with his cape flowing ready for one more fight(movie)? That seems more of a happy ending than the bittersweet ending we got. The film has some flaws but the ending was not one of them in my opinion, it was dramatic, emotional and uplifting.

  I agree with you, it's the worst of the trilogy indeed. BUT it's one of the best comic book movies of all times! Contradictory much? Not really! 'Cause we've a stupendous trilogy! It's a very difficult, almost impossible task, for the final chapter of a trilogy being better than it's predecessors. Plus, I just can't analyse TDKR as a single piece, but as part of a whole story pack, you know?!
  For me is BB > TDK > TDKR, but after all, it doesn't really matter! 'Cause Nolan saved the franchise from a pathetic situation and delivered us the ultimate Batman trilogy! =)

Nolan is a great director, but there comes a time when pride crosses into stubbornness.
The fans have supported Nolan, the fans are ultimately the ones who put money in Nolan's pockets. Why doesn't Nolan give back to the people who supported him? It's no secret that 99% of the people want to see an extended release including the footage of Bane's backstory. What is the crime in doing so?
We supported you Nolan, maybe it's time you showed your appreciation.

Just because I would like to see extra scenes in the Bluray release doesn't mean that I wasn't satisfied with the original movie. You are making things up in your head my friend.

        I think you misunderstood me, what I meant was that if you won't be
        happy with the movie, just as it is, then show your disapproval by not
        purchasing the Blu-ray/DVD, which really is the only thing that might
        change things, although that is doubtful. I didn't mean to imply that
        you didn't think the movie was good and that's really cool that you got
        to be in it too.
        Also I understand where you are coming from, I would love to see extra
        scenes and behind the scene footage too. Behind the scene stuff would be
        very interesting since Nolan tries to do most things practically, and
        even though I don't think anything specific was missing from the film,
        some scenes such as Bane training with the LoS would be cool to see too;
        especially if part of that was Bane standing on post just like Bruce in
        BB but instead of blocking and dodging the attacks he grabs the sticks,
        breaks them, grabs the guys, "breaks" them, and is just a f-ing
        monster.
        However, Nolan has pretty much said he doesn't shoot many extra scenes
        and likes to maintain the magic of movie making. I respect the fact that
        he takes the time to make sure the scenes he shoots are necessary and
        will be used, and I kind of see his point about retaining the magic of
        movie making. I hate watching movies with my one friend because he is
        always talking about how this was done, or that was done and pointing
        out mistakes; sometimes I just want to see a man fly or see a bunch of
        dinosaurs and be entertained.
        Finally I wasn't offended by your opinion. I just disagree. Suggesting
        that just because you buy a ticket you have the right to dictate what a
        director should or shouldn't do, seems whiny to me. As you stated Nolan
        is a great director so sit back and enjoy the movie and if you want a
        bunch of extras and deleted scenes, I humbly suggest you buy/rent a
        different film.

        Nolan made those movies because he had a passion to make them. He wanted to do it. Don't make it seem that the time spent on the franchise was in bondage. Nolan should at least understand the passion that WE have for this character. What's wrong with simply offering the unused footage, especially if it actually ADDS to the movie? This was his sendoff, and i just think he can make it more memorable if we see more of his characters.

With an ending like that, at least show Blake slapping on the suit and not let us have to result to watching the "Batman Maybe" music video to get our fill for that dream. Don't wait for the Apocalypse to decide to give back. By than we will not be able to afford movie ticket pirces, as we will be stockpiling food, water, blankets etc.

    There were only 4 scenes showing that Bruce lived, I guess none of that was real. And Selina was nowhere near the bomb, she was with Gordon and Fox, so I guess that means they died too. Wow, this movie was depressing!

    Alfred being old doesn't explain the other three scenes lethatgicj alluded to. Also I don't think it would make sense for Alfred to picture Selina there due to him being senile. Now if he saw Rachael and Bruce there, I might agree with you, but when he left the mansion, there wasn't really any relationship between Selina and Bruce for him to project onto other people.

    Michael, I am not going to be as harsh in my comments to you like others are being, because I don't believe it will get us anywhere, ok? Now with that said, are you messing with us on your theory? Erik put it best. There is no way Alfred would picture Selina (of all people) with Bruce at the cafe. Selina was nowhere near the blast, therefore, I think that the fact that Alfred sees her there with him makes it clear that Bruce Wayne made it. That part of the ending is awesome. Blake being given the keys to the Batcave, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt conducting all these interviews saying that his part in the ending, of the movie, closes the trilogy "perfectly" is another story.

Ussualy the cut scenes from Nolan's Batman are not big loss, i think are the same with TDKR. Im happy with the cut (and rhythm) of TDKR. I felt most of the critics about TDKR are for people what waiting TDK 2.The movie for me its much more closer to the comics than the first 2, and at the same time dont leave Nolan style away.

So I've inferred from this that we shouldn't expect a decent trilogy release this year, either? I mean, how can there NOT be a box set release in time for the holiday season? I can't fathom Warner Bros. not cashing in on that.

  They will. That's why all this bashing of Nolan is so silly. At the end of the day it doesn't matter what Nolan wants. For right now, sure. But over the next few years, WB is going to milk this franchise for every cent they could possibly get for it. We'll likely see multiple versions released this fall. Then sometime in the next couple of years the trilogy boxset will come out. Then in 2015 during the JLA movie hype they'll probably release a super duper boxset with all the deleted scenes and crap.

If i could add one scene to the current cut it would be an explanation or sequence showing or telling us how Bruce after escaping the pit got back to and then inside of Gotham that was the only jarring moment to me in the film Bruce just turning up like he did was a bit WTF ! As for more Bane info i dont need it the only info that mattered in the end was he devoted his life to protecting Talia that to me made sense and is a theme echoed through out the trilogy .

  Getting from the pit, someone suggested in a different thread that Bruce might have bank accounts outside the U.S. that are still available to him. Also Lucius talked about different Wayne divisions around the world that he was working on closing, hence the extra tumblers. There could have been a division still open around the area of the pit. Finally you have to remember that if neither of these things are true, Bruce spent 7 years in Begins on his own and probably became very resourceful, learning things that would help in this situation.
  As for getting back into Gotham, the same person who suggested the bank accounts also suggested that before being taken to the pit, the Bat was left in the Batcave. This would help explain how he got back onto the island and also why Bane's army didn't just discover it on some random roof with a tarp covering it; the Bat wasn't on the roof unattended for months just the day or two Bruce was back in Gotham, which makes more sense.

    Good stuff Erik, but I think fans want to see that, not everyone is that creative to come up with all those great possibilities. At least show The Bat land on some roof top as soon as he gets back would probably be enough for the average fan to start thinking about him making as far back to the Batcave non detected. I am with EBo Rises, a scene to explain some of that would have been nice.

      I agree it would have been nice to see this; as I said, I didn't even think about that until I read another post. We could have maybe seen him in the cave getting the suit and/or getting in the Bat. It also could have been at least alluded to when he meets up with Lucius later. But maybe Nolan thought it would affect the flow of the film or had a set time limit due to IMAX as others have said.
      Personally, as a Batman fan, I wouldn't have minded seeing these scenes and lots more. I mean if a film about a boat sinking can be over three hours, people wouldn't have minded a four hour Batman film.

        Yeah what is it these days about movies being under 3 hours? I understand that there are IMAX limitations, from what I hear, but I love movies that have alot of story to tell, and I don't mind the drag that some people complain about. Take TDKR for instance, the IGN review gave it a 90% I believe, but said the movie moved too fast at times, which is the same sensation I got when I watched it. It reminds me of Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. I loved that movie as well, but it moved very quickly also. I guess we have fans of both; some that cannot stand a dragging movie and some that have trouble with movies moving too fast. It is a very difficult balance to put up on the big screen, it seems like.

I wouldn't mind seeing a director's cut, either. I think it would be cool. But at least look at it from Nolan's point-of-view as well. If Nolan has a director's cut, people will just complain and wish those deleted scenes made the movie. So what if we get to see more of a back story on Bane? What does that mean? None of that made it into the official movie anyways so those scenes are basically pointless. It's like Tivo-ing a football game and watching the entire game over again just to see a couple 2-yard runs that happened while you were away from the TV. In the grand scheme of it all, it means nothing.

I was there on the date pictured above for that shoot and had an amazing time. A lot was omitted from my scene, but the film would not have flowed if it were included. If you want to see content that was ommitted than look at all of the dark knight rises nyc footage on you tube to get a better sense of what you missed. There is just one areal shot of the cops and thugs fighting that was in one 30 second preview, but not in the film.
Look at the preview where the guy says "these are violent criminals that terrorize the city to see the areal shot of the big fight that took place on wall street. That was in the preview, but not in the film.

1. It wasn't blurry at all.
2. Why would Alfred imagine Selina there? If it was a dream wouldn't Bruce be with Rachel not somebody that Alfred ONLY knows as a criminal?
3. How would Selina have tried to help? Did she zip out there on her Catboat?
4. If he died, what was the point of the scene explaining the autopilot had been fixed?
5. If he died, why was Gordon shocked when he saw the bat-signal repaired?
6. If he died, how did he leave the instructions for Blake to get to the cave?

  I have this theory that nobody talks about that is that Bruce didn´t bail out the Bat over the ocean but minutes earlier when he creates that explosion on the last building before reaching the water. The fact that we see batman on the cockpit is just for misleading purposes.
  I´m sure Selina knew nothing of Bruce´s plans and she might got very surprised to see him alive afterwards.

    Yeah I think I've read that theory at imdb.com where just as the Bat hoovered over the tall building, Batman jumped out and landed onto the roof as the Bat autopilot continued its course into the ocean.
    BUT THEN AGAIN, he said "no auto-pilot" the moment he kisses Selina goodbye, but I think that was just to give Gordon the impression that he was going to die so that Gordon can tell the press that Batman sacrificed himself. Technically he did, "The Legend Ends".
    I THOUGHT as the Bat is flying over the ocean, you see a close up where Batman looks down to his left window in the cockpit then back to the front of the ocean, meaning: He watched the bomb drop into the water and he continued to fly and get the hell out of there.

  1. It was crystal clear. Selina was a little fuzzy because the camera was focused on Bruce and she was in the foreground.
  2. Sure, Alfred has seen her, be he ONLY knew her as a thief. He was long gone by time she switched sides and joined Batman. He would have no reason at all to imagine those two hooking up in France.

  5. Yes, we do know who repaired the signal. Bruce did. That was the entire point of the endings. He let Lucious, Gordon and Alfred all know that he was alive in ways that made sense to each character without just coming out and sending them a Hallmark card.

    lethargicj, you're ridiculous. Some of us sincerely think that this was a bit of a letdown, especially since we have waited 4 years for the film to come out. We love The Batman as much as you, so it bothers us when we know that there's more to this that we haven't been able to see. Especially if it's extra footage of such a mysterious villain who we've NEVER seen without the mask (even if we do see Tom's face for like 5 seconds, it's TOM FUCKING HARDY! PEOPLE SHOULD KNOW THAT HE WAS THE VILLAIN FOR THE THIRD FILM!) Plus, Bane parallels himself as Batman's dark side. It would be cool to see his beginnings as we did Bruce's in Batman Begins.

      If the focus had been on Bane that much, it would be similar to the three movies that followed the '89 Batman movie, where a bigger focus was on the villains, and people would be complaining that it was a Bane movie not a Batman movie. I agree knowing more about him would be interesting but that's what comics/videogames/animated movies are for. You can only do so much in a few hours.
      And are you seriously complaining that a villain who almost, if not always is shown wearing a mask, wears his mask the entire film? Also Tom Hardy wasn't the villain for the third film, Bane was.
