Batman to get rebooted in 2015 'Justice League' movie?

on Batman to get rebooted in 2015 'Justice League' movie?

It's all but confirmed that Warner Bros. is looking to produce a Justice League movie after reintroducing Superman into the world in next summer's Man of Steel. It's been reported that Will Beall has been hired to pen the Justice League script, and Warner Bros. is already looking at potential directors for the project. So how does this all affect the future of Batman on the big screen? Batman-on-Film has heard some whispers...

Said reboot will come after the [Justice League] film, not before. Therefore, the new cinematic Batman will be introduced in the [Justice League] film as opposed to a solo film. This would, according to my industry "[Friend of Batman-on-Film]", assure the new Batman film series will be part of a "DC Cinematic Universe."

Batman-on-Film goes on to say that this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, but it does pose an interesting scenario for Batman fans. Whoever is cast in the upcoming Justice League movie, which will probably be released in 2015, is likely to be the Batman we see on the big screen for years to come. As always, stay tuned to Batman-News.com for all the latest on Batman's cinematic future.

First, the reboot of Superman has to be successful. So far DC movies, other than Dark Knight were not really that good. They will see how successful and reviews are for Man of Steel before Justice League fully gets the green light.  Truely, they should not reboot Batman.  A continuation can be almost reboot.

Last comment. I don't trust WB with the Justice League.  I think people need to stop getting hype about it. Avengers was a success because they took years in creating it, shaping the storyline and characters.  It appears WB wants to force it.  People are too excited when the only successful WB superhero movie is the Dark Knight series. Superman Returns was a let down. Green Lantern was just OK. Why do you guys think Justice League is going to be a great movie?  Let's wait to see how Man of Steel turns out. And I will be pissed off if they reboot Batman.

None of this is written in stone. If Man of Steel is a flop. They will be real hesitant in doing the Justice League movie, and especially rebooting Batman where they possibly may ruin their only profitable DC super hero series.  WB, don't reboot Batman. Continue it.  You just need a good story.  I don't support reboots. I didn't even see Amazing Spiderman.

I don't want to see anyone else in the batsuit for 10 years, at least. If you want to fill the Batman void in JLA then use JGL's Robin - possibly with a cameo from Bale as Bruce. In the original JLA, Batman resisted officially joining the team and often only came in times of crisis, so limited screen time would work. In any case, it's far too soon to try to reproduce or match Nolan's masterpiece.

It'd be cool to see them do the reverse of Avengers, making a trio Justice League (Wonder Woman, Supes, and Bats (as either Gordon Levitt or Jon Hamm (YES))) and then loose (quality) spin offs of Batman and Wonder Woman.  BUT PLEASE REBOOT GREEN LANTERN.

Then again, maybe they should wait on Justice League a while. It'll look kinda dumb if they release a JLA movie one summer, then an Avengers the next, on and off for the next decade...

regarding batmans introduction into the dc film universe, i think they should show him first in the justice league as an already established hero and legend of Gotham and when all these new heroes begin showing up all around the world, he starts gathering Intel on them to determine if they our threats, and as he is gathering Intel on say martian manhunter have him uncover plans of an impending alien invasion (which i know is basically similar to avengers, but if the movies gonna have superman and manhunter, two aliens, and green lantern, part of a corps of aliens, its most likely gonna have aliens as enemies). he then decides to enlist the help of these new heroes to stop it. dont make him like the main hero cos then it would be like batman and friends, more like a nick fury role, but more involved and planning out attacks. have like the semi main hero as superman obviously, and show the rivalry between him and batman. once the justice league film is released then bring in the new batman films, but have like the first one or two set before the events of justice league, but show him like mid way through his career where hes already had run ins with his more realistic villains, and now hes starting to have encounters with more fictional villains, like man-bat, make his movie more relate-able to the more fictional movies of man of steel and wonder woman. and don't bring in another joker til like the third or fourth film, if they do well enough to get that far. but instead of having him as a new villain, present him as one of batmans early career villains, and that he has been locked up in arkham for years, and has been planning his escape for the right moment

I like your ideas, but boy I just would have liked WB to already have a Batman ready to go, and not some new that now they have to rush to put out there because Nolan's Batman will probably not be the one. It just seems too soon, and these reboots are getting closer and closer together. So close, in fact, that you and I should put our own interpretation of Batman on the big screen.

I am still perplexed by the logic that Batman shouldn't be in a JLA movie because his world is supposed to be grounded and realistic and gritty and all that horsepoop. If you are a Batman fan then you surely read the comics, at least to some degree. Batman has been a member of the Justice League since 1960. Has that ever diminished what Batman is? Not at all. Why would it diminish him now? Did The Dark Knight Returns suck because Superman and Wonder Woman were in it?

People claim what makes Batman special is that he has no superpowers. But if he's not surrounded by people with superpowers then he's no longer special. Batman not having powers only means something when he's a in world filled with powers. For me, Batman's interaction with those powered people is what would make a JLA story great. And to me this silly idea of continuing Nolan's movies with JGL is WAAAAAAY more insulting to Batman than any JLA movie would be. Basically you're making Batman look like a joke. JGL wouldn't have the years of training Bruce had, he wouldn't have the money Bruce had, and he wouldn't have a huge company making him toys. All he has is a cave filled with some leftover equipment. But I'm supposed to buy that he can just put that suit on and go be Batman? Screw that noise.

I am having a bit of a difficult time following what you are saying, but I am probably still half asleep, so I do apologize. If you are saying that there is no reason why Nolan's Batman (Christian Bale) would not work in a JLA movie because Batman is suppose to be pretty much the only JLA member that has no super powers anyways, than I definitely agree with you. I don't know why everyone says this Batman would not work in a JLA movie when he is exactly who Batman is suppose to be anyways. You are absolutely right that putting this Batman in a JLA movie makes more sense than believing that Blake just picked up where Bruce Wayne left off, without training for it, is much more non-believable.

      1. lethargicj Avatar
        lethargicj

No, not Bale's Batman. Bale's Batman is done. He's not even in the discussion. I mean Batman in general. Every single one of these threads is filled with people saying Batman shouldn't be in this movie, he shouldn't be in the JLA, he shouldn't be connected to any other DC characters, he should be kept seperate, he shouldn't be part of a connected universe. My point is that Batman has been apart of the DC universe for decades upon decades upon decades and we all still love the character. His character in the comic book wasn't ruined by him being in the JLA and being connected to Superman and the others. His character in the movies won't be ruined by it either. I just don't get why fanboys are usually whining that movies aren't faithful to the comics, but in this case the fanboys are whining because the movie might actually BE faithful to the comics.

I have a more radical idea for Justice League; do it without Batman for now! Batman doesn´t need exposure like the rest of those guys, he can come up later on the sequel. If WB is not going to make solo movies for Wonder Woman or The Flash then let them shine in this then reintroduce Batman later around 2017 on Justice League 2, for now the audience has this idea that Batman is no more and his universe doesn´t accept super powered heroes, let it fade a while longer...

I've sorted out my feelings and come to the conclusion that I'm okay with this, and here's why:

First, I'm primarily a Bat-fan and don't really give a toss about the rest of the DC universe. As a lone, non-powered human, it really makes he, his city, allies, and gallery of rouges far more engrossing. When you widen out to see him in the middle of a world with aliens and mutants with abilities like flying, speed, super-strength, eye beams, transmogrifying, power rings, etc, it simply take a lot of the impact out of it.

However, establishing him within this world from the get-go would at least put some both distance and distinction between this version and Nolan's. I can deal with that. For example, I appreciate both the Nolan films and Batman: The Animated Series equally even though they are projected in two different media and worlds (at least up until The New Batman Adventures started integrating him, but that show was a step-down anyway, so that maybe a bit tangent).

Setting up shop within a relatively less realistic world would also up some opportunities. I would think that in terms of foes, they'd want to stay away from Nolan's (especially the Joker), thus forcing them to incorporate new ones. The new take would allow them to utilise villains Nolan didn't (or didn't want to) touch. Not only could they bring in ones that got botched in the original film series like Riddler or Mr Freeze, but they can also introduce those not seen previously in live action like Killer Croc or, barring good special effects, Clayface.

There are other elements that could make or break it, but with the definitive live action Batman story having now been told, I feel comfortable enough to look off to the side to see a different take.

Let the actors who have played characters In the dc universe like Ryan reynolds as green lantern, Henry cavill as superman, and Christian bale as batman... Both bale and reynolds' have played great on their parts, but I wanna see how cavill does with being superman though. But yeah, let them reprise their roles. As for the other characters who don't have actors to play them, whoever directs them should pick serious actors, not like the avengers (don't get me wrong great frigging movie, which was fun and not as dark as TDKR) they should keep it in the reals world aspect as the man of steel is supposed to be.

Ridiculous. In every sense of the word if this is really what they are choosing to do. How in the hell are you going to have a Justice League movie by 2015 and introduce characters like Wonder Woman, Marvel Man, Flash, Aquaman and whoever else? This is just absurd. DC really has that big of a hard on to rival The Avengers so much so that they are willing to return their two biggest cash cows to the "campy/cartoonish" absurdity of joining superheroes together to fight some JV villain like Kanjar Ro?The reason The Dark Knight Saga was immensely successful was because it was dark, realistic and phenomenally well done through the art of story telling and directing -- which will hopefully hold true for Man of Steel. The Dark Knight will transcend much longer into history than the Avengers can ever hope to and had TDKR been filmed in IMAX 3D not only would it already be over 1 billion in total gross sales but it could very well be challenging Avengers (which was clearly geared at younger audiences and didn't have to deal with a tragedy on opening night either). DC should focus on Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Flash and/or Wonder Woman and try and make characters like Flash and Wonder Woman as realistic as possible -- maintaining that "realistic" approach DC already has going for it with Superman and Batman. Dark in tone, thematic story telling and realism in approach. There is no reason to follow the whole campy/cartoony versions like what they tried doing with the Green Lantern. To be perfectly honest The Hulk, Captain America and Thor weren't exactly breaking box office records when their own individual movies hit the screen -- the most popular character out of that Avengers ensemble happened to be the guy without any superhero powers and the one who draws the most attention from the fan base in Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man. He's the only successful character of the bunch. As for Batman's future. Why do another reboot of this character? Your not going to top Nolan's version and why would people want to see yet another reboot of this character after an immensely successful run? Why can't JGL have his own standoff movie as Batman Beyond/Nightwing whatever? Why can't the character already be established and go off into a storyline like Arkham Asylum, Dark Victory or Hush? Why do we need to recreate this character AGAIN -- it makes zero sense. Your essentially going backwards to retell a story that can't be topped and its unnecessary. The character has roots now give the audience some credit and let him go off where we haven't seen him before!

    1. G Menon Avatar
      G Menon

I disagree with you on continuing Nolan's Batman with JGL. That arc was ended and was meant to be self-contained. Nolan's vision never lended itself to a world with other superheroes. Leave Nolan be, he made a classic.

The Justice League needs a Batman that's more along the lines of the animated series and the Arkham games. That can be done with zero reference to the Nolan-verse and this Batman should be given some screen-time before he has to share it with half a dozen other characters. A World's Finest movie with Superman Vs. Batman can (re)introduce both characters in contrast to each other and have them be established in their respective cities and spheres of activity without retelling their story.

      1. Bendutchover Avatar
        Bendutchover

What I believe is this... One day the fans will get tired of these reboots. It's a fad. All fads come and go. Look at all those 80's and 90's action stars trying to make a comeback. Sure it is working ok, but it will never be like it was before, and when this reboot nonsense runs out of steam, it will fade into the sunset like they did. My only concern is that it might start with DC movies before Marvel ones. That would simply suck because I am more of a DC fan than a Marvel one.

        1. G Menon Avatar
          G Menon

The Amazing Spider-man was a good movie but retread old ground so yes reboots can be tiring. However a different take on a known character doesn't have to be a reboot.

A lot of Batman-related film, animation, games reference his parents' death but few qualify as a full retelling of the character's origin. In film, only Batman Begins truly qualifies as a progression into Bruce becoming Batman. The '89 Batman film comes closest (with the Joker killing his parents)  & Batman Forever is centered around identical struggles but neither shares Begins' story, not like how Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-man retold Peter Parker's origin story, also done by Raimi's Spider-man.

But if it's simply a different interpretation of an established character, like Arkham Asylum which shared nothing in common with Nolan's films that were out at the time, then it should work depending on the strengths of the story being told. The animated direct to video movies put out despite Nolan's live action tenure have proved this. Any director-actor combo could put their own spin on Batman, just look at the James Bond movies with it's varied takes on an iconic character. You could reinvent villains & supporting characters in that context and don't need to touch Nolan's work to do that.

        2. BruceWayne Avatar
          BruceWayne

Well quite frankly the expendables 2 was far better than the avengers! So those old action stars deserve more credit than your willing to give.

          1. Bendutchover Avatar
            Bendutchoverreplying to BruceWayne

I do give to them credit, for there time. I never said the movie was not better than the avengers, but it is silly to argue that they are more popular because the numbers do not lie. Therefore, right now, comic book movie adaptations are more in demand, more popular, and more profitable at the present time for Hollywood. The thing about what is mainstream popular is that usually whatever is mainstream at the time, in this case comic book movies, usually gets more complaints than what would be considered underground type styles of music or even movies. Like it or not comic book movies are here to stay awhile (including the Marvel ones), however, once it slows down (reboots), something new will become what is in demand. That's just the way the entertainment business works. I was a big fan of those 80s and 90s action heroes that you claim I am not giving enough credit to. Again, all I am saying is that they are not as popular as they once were. So therefore, even if it is a better movie than the avengers the fact that the avengers made as much as it did shows what the people want right now. Those heroes like Sly, Arnold, Norris, and even Van Damme are the reason I got into the line of work I do, so please don't put words in my mouth, because you are assuming that I don't like them, and all I am saying is that the money that fans spend towards rebooted projects will stop one day and fade into the sunset (profitability wise) as those guys did, and it has nothing to do with their talents only to do with the types of movies they made mostly.

    2. Bendutchover Avatar

I could not have put that better myself. After reading all of the responses earlier before yours, I was starting to believe that the majority, if not all, DC fans were just settling for this garbage, but you have the guts to tell it like it is and I respect your opinion. I also think your idea is the right one. I do not want another reboot, origins story, or even a Batman spin off from a new Batman that appears in Justice League first. That is about as dumb as it can get, an as you put it, it simply is not necessary. Please WB do a Batman Beyond or Nightwing movie that ties in with Nolan's Batman. Even if Nolan will not direct anymore. PLEASE!!!!!

Why do you believe that they can't make a JL movie that couldn't as good as the Nolan saga. I'm sure before Nolan took the reigns of the Batman franchise people were question what good could come from batman movies after the whole Joel Schumacher fiasco. A JL can be good..heck great if done right. And Nolan's trilogy is over unfortunately over. And believe you me I'd love to see a Selina and  Nightwing movie in that universe. But you have a greater chance of fucking that up and pissing on the Nolan films. Might be just to leave that alone unless you can be guaranteed greatness.  Personally I would make a new Batman movie (batman who already is batm,an no origina nonsense) that sorta exists in a world like Nolan's then slowly introduce the fantastical. Once you allow for a alien baby coming to earth who will one day grow up to be Superman; you pretty much open up a universe where the "out there" becomes the new reality. Anyhow as good as Nolan's series was. I really would love to see a live action version of animated series/JL  Batman

      1. GODOFKNIGHT Avatar
        GODOFKNIGHT

I'm sorry but "The Avengers" was not a good movie.
I don't base my opinion off ticket sales and domestic gross numbers. I look at
the story, the establishment of the characters and the threat they face. And
while they made the story somewhat appealing and gave each character a
"decent" amount of screen time it's not like we've never seen some
ridiculous aliens running amok in downtown before. When you assemble characters
like this what is there for them all to do? Who do they fight? Well apparently
the universal answer to that question is Aliens trying to destroy earth. How much
more cliché can you really get with that premise?

The reason Avengers worked in the public’s eye is because
this was the first time a franchise had ever combined characters like this all
on screen at one time, the film was targeted at an all ages audiences and it
had the advantage of introducing movie-goes to IMAX 3D. This does not make for
a successful movie franchise nor a blueprint for a future DC success. Compare “The
Avengers” success with that of its characters in standoff movies; Thor, Captain
America and The Hulk were all critically panned and none were very successful –
but again, the concept for The Avengers worked because of the intangibles of
the film not because of the story or the success of its characters.

So now DC is going to try and run off that concept -- but
the only problem is they’re getting to the table second. They have no standoff
films to introduce characters like Marvel Man, Wonder Woman, Flash or Aquaman
(nobody outside of the DC fanbase even knows who these characters are), IMAX 3D
will be well established by 2015 or whenever this JL movie hits (so there goes
your highest gross aspect), then you come to the actual story, the villains,
the premise – well that’s gotta be Aliens right? Because who else is there to
fight when you have a collection of superheroes? And the premise? Well that’s
gotta be the destruction of Earth because what else is there to save? You see
where I’m going with this --- it’s repetitive, it’s already been done before.

DC needs its own path, and they’re actually on that path
right now making “realistic” superhero movies with Man of Steel and The Dark
Knight --- why not stay on the path? Why does DC need Justice League for any
other reason than just to do it and because Marvel did theirs? It’s not going
to be the cash cow the studio is envisioning, the cash cows of this franchise
are Superman and Batman and they both have enough fanbase and history to blow
anything Marvel does out of the water – if done correctly.

          TDKR

That's only your opinion. And you've got a couple things wrong.
There's only a finite amount of plots, you know. The idea of fighting aliens was taken from the comics so it's been done but this time, it's for good reason. And even with a simple premise, the EXECUTION was brilliant and that's coming from a comic book and a movie fan. You can say Rises was cliche too if we're basing this on premise... How many terrorists have been fought in movies?

That is one of the reasons Avengers worked but the movie was so much more than that. But if you hate it, that's fine. You're wrong though: it DOES make for a successful blueprint for DC. Because they'll be the second to have a superhero movie and arguably, DC's characters are more popular. And another wrong thing: Thor and Captain America were well-recieved and had a good box office and Hulk got mixed reviews. The Avengers had a simple story but it was done right and the characters and their characterization and interactions were done perfectly, like the dynamic between Stark and Banner.

Dude, everybody knows Wonder Woman and Flash. A lot, but not most, know about Aquaman and Marvel Man doesn't exist (actually there's a Marvelman but he isn't even DC).

          1. GODOFKNIGHT Avatar
            GODOFKNIGHTreplying to TDKR

Mines not an opinion its a fact, and how is fighting aliens ever for good reason? Because you say it is? Executed brilliantly? How do you figure that? Because you saw it in IMAX 3D and thought it was cool? You've never seen Aliens fighting before or what? And re-explain to me why Aliens were necessary in that film -- the premise was so lost on me I can't seem to recall.

Rises plot isn't cliche' for a number of reasons the first of which being we've never seen a film where an "revolutionist" (not a terrorist) performs at levels of such extreme authenticity -- certainly nothing even close to as dark as what we saw from Bane.

Captain America and Thor were well received? There goes your creditability because neither earned more than $200 mil/in domestic gross and rank 154th and 176th all time in domestic box office totals right behind Jurassic Park 3 and What Women Want. So that speaks to how "successful" those two films were. The HULK?!! Your kidding right! They had to re-boot the Hulk after less than 5 years because he was that bad! They've now had 3 different actors play The Hulk in 3 different films --- he's an awful character for the big screen -- HE DOESN'T WORK!

DC's characters are no longer more popular because no one even knows who they are, so how can they be more popular? Who are you referring to? Green Lantern? We saw how he finished up with his "campy/cartoony" approach (the same path your suggesting Batman should go down with your pro-Justice League rant). And actually DC does have a Marvel Man but his name was changed to Captain Marvel (in 1949).

the dark knight franchise can go forward with or without Nolan, you just need a good script and good execution and mind you there were faults in the DK film, like harvey says where my family died and he goes to 250 52nd street but actually should have gone to Avenue X cicero

I don't have problem with them doing if this way if this is the way the chose to go. My concern is who they get to take them in this direction.  I hope they get people who have experience in this genre on one level or another as opposed to the latest "in" write or director. Also the only people besides Nolan who have been successful at this for Warner are the animation people. People who have a at least some experience of presenting the comic book material on the screen..even if it is the small one. Use their talents.

I mean who here wouldn't want to see Batman and the rest of the JL presented (at least in part)  as they were in the JL/JLU series? Warner has to be VERY careful that in the end they put out a product on that level or on the level of Nolan's films. If far too easy to end up with Joel Schumacher Justice League of neon and nipples :)

I think it will never be that bad again...I hope.

I would prefer a Superman Vs. Batman movie as a precursor to a Justice League film. As well as standalone films for any other characters they want to include.

They can't just have the JL with all its characters in a single movie without any background for them. The Avengers relied on Marvel's standalone films for a reason.

You are absolutely right. Set it up first. I like to know how it all began, and not just come into being out of no where!
