'The Dark Knight Rises' viral marketing continues with the Gotham Observer

DewGothamCity.com updated today with more cool content from The Dark Knight Rises. A new area of the site opened, the Gotham convenience store, and inside is a newsstand with the Gotham Observer newspaper. The paper mentions Harvey Dent Day which will include a Gotham Rogues scrimmage football game, a charity event at Wayne Manor, and a 21-gun salute by the Gotham City Police Department. Flipping through the other pages of the newspaper reveals that there has been a string of burglaries in Gotham. The suspect has a love for jewelry and was spotted leaving the scene of the crime dressed in all back. Sound like any cat burglar you know?

Moving onto page 3 we're greeted with an advertisement for a company called Rykin Data, who hopes to revolutionize personal security. Clicking on the ad takes you to their website, RykinData.com. The website just displays the patent they've followed for their new security technology, but I'll be keeping my eye on it in case something more interesting pops up.   It has already been confirmed that it was simply fan made. basically, they asked the people who were there at the stadium to write the letter, and one smartass thought of doing the Robin logo. But don,t expect to see Robin in the movie.

I'm sorry, but this campaign is extremely lame. The viral marketing for TDK was very well thought out, fan focused, and really cool to watch unfold. It started nearly a year before the film opened (remember the jack-o-lantern?). Obviously that's the difference between a campaign run by your creative talent and one run by executives. Don't get me wrong...I loves me some capitalism. But if you're going to try to sell me sody-pop, at least put some effort into it rather than cranking out a half-@$$ed attempt to recreate one of the greatest film promotions ever.

    I don't see how this one can even hold a candle to TDK. With TDK there were scavenger hunts, puzzles, and a slew of websites, and all of it was progressing almost daily for months. What have we seen with this one? A few media outlets received a promo packet with a t-shirt and a map of "strike zones" that didn't lead to anything, a Tumbler tour, a couple of contests, and the Mountain Dew site. I'd really be interested to know what you like better about this campaign, because I honestly can't see how it's even half as engaging or creative as the previous one.

      You missed the one where they put the bat insignia at random places to unlock trailer 3 which is pretty neat. In these newspapers you see more of the state of Gotham and if you look at the horoscopes it looks like they mean something to each character. Piscies for Bruce who was born on February 19th says "Although times are hard you have to rise up and face them". And Gemini is for catwoman which deals with choosing sides which fits her. Also you missed this other viral site http://www.rykindata.com/. And i could also be missing things too myself i kind of skimmed through the newspaper articles. If you check their mountain dew website they are releasing more info on july 8, 2012. They don't need as much marketing as last time because they had already built their audience.

  In the GCPD, if you click the keyboard or mouse for the computer, it stops the screensaver and shows the TDKR Facebook page on the monitor. If you click the bottom drawer on the same desk, it opens to reveal a bunch of Dark Berry Mtn. Dew.

  There are two switches on the window. One for the sign and another at the bottom of the window. If you click both you hear some sort of buzz, like if a lock for a prison door was just opened. Weird.

  Id say Bane... Bane was apart of the League of Shadows. Wayne was always Ras' best student he said, this made bane angry and acted out which got him kicked out. Now he wants revenge. Hes getting back at Bruce Wayne, not Gotham i think.

    I really don't think Bane wants revenge on Bruce Wayne just because Ra's Al Ghul said Bruce Wayne was his best student. That is not how Bane is, that's not his style. I think Bane was kicked out of the league of shadows for other reasons, since then, he wanted to show the league of shadows he's worth to be part of them. So he when to Gotham made his own league of shadows and do Ra's Al ghul's dream.

It's interesting how Marion Cottiard has only appeared for a split second in all the previews. That seems like a sure sign her character is supposed to be a surprise. Of course, we all know who she is.

i know that Chris Nolan does not want to mention or acknowledge the joker in any way in TDKR due to respect to Heath Ledger's memory, but it just feel a little odd that a criminal that affected Gotham in a huge way in the previous movie doesn't gets mentioned when talking about harvey dent. Although just batman and gordon knows that harvey got disfigured and died because of the joker's twisted plan, the people of gotham certainly are conscious that harvey's rise came during the joker's rampage, so it's odd that the newspaper doesn't mentions that when it comes to harvey dent's day, actually, when you read it, it feels like something is missing. Just saying.

  to be honest, it really sucks, and the lack of a mention reduces the credibility of the story, for me, the biggest challenge of the script was how to explain the disappearance of the joker, now what's the idea, let's pretend that the joker never existed or what?

Anyone know what Miranda Tate's birthday is? The Scorpio horoscope says "Your current employer does not value you. Time to move on." Maybe this is alluding to her love for Bruce, but maybe he takes it for granted and thats what causes her to take Bane's side and reveal her true identity as Talia. Anyone else want to give me your predictions on what some of these horoscopes mean? I know they are predicting stuff.

  Hmmm. Security company eh? They might specialize in military security technology. Which means they could have something to do with the tumbler vehicles we've seen. Maybe they're financed by Bane. Or they were overtaken by Bane during the Stock Market debacle.

    Also, with that said, I think Bane might be the other billionaire. He clearly has enough money to charter a jet and afford all the gadgets and crew involved in hijacking of the plane we saw in the prologue. My guess is he came into this huge amount of money by corrupting the Stock Market. I'm not sure exactly how, but I do know for a fact he's powerful and money does buy power.

I could be way out to lunch here, so, in the risk of sounding like a blubbering fool - Matt Modine looks like he could easily play Harvey Dent's relative. They look kinda similar to me. Maybe he's Dent's cousin or something...can anyone confirm or deny a relation between the two?

  I don't think its a timeline of Bruce's life during the movie. I reread all the horoscopes and even out of order some of them just don't make sense. Especially the one about a significant financial investment, he is a billionaire he doesn't need any more money. I still believe each one has to do with a specific character.
