Mark Millar says new 'Justice League' movie is "dark and mature"

Late on Tuesday night news broke that Warner Bros. was getting serious about a Justice League movie, having hired Will Beall to write the script. Now comic book writer Mark Millar has a few details to add about the direction of the movie.

A pal of mine is good friends with the new Justice League screenwriter and said his take on the team is incredible. Very real-world and not at all what you might expect. WB has a chequered history with their superhero characters. They're great with their boy wizards, but less consistent with their DC stable. But my chum said that this could be a thing of beauty and has been in the works for a little while now, not just an avengers knock-off. Best of luck to them. The tidbits I heard sound quite dark and mature, which isn't what I expected. But word on Gangster Squad is great too so I feel this is in really good hands.

Fans of the universe that Christopher Nolan created will be happy to hear this news, though how "real-world" can you get with heroes like Superman and The Flash? Even, as a rational humam being, i not trust in Mark Millar, i believe this time he is right. If you analyse things, Jeff Robinov anouced a JLA start shooting in 2013 and a Batman reboot after in Hero Complex, and Comic Book News (is a site what i trust for exatcly goes right in his rumors) said geoff Johns start a rought draft of the script last year.The movie itself was a responde to Avengers sucess? Yes, but is been made quickly just because that? No. I believe is the right decision they finish the critic and audience sucess of Nolan's Batman and focus to unite the DCU after that. And why not show JLA first, even they use that tatics in comics reboot? For now, i think they going much well than 2007, what have some great action and some nice moments, but some choice in terms of cast and plot by George Miller are not that good.Probably WB are more prepared than us imagine, and i think important they have a very different aproach, because i dont want see a JLAvengers, i wanna see THE GOD DAMN JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA FUCK YEAH MOVIE!

If they can't fork over the money that Bale deserves to play Batman, this will be lame. The continuity with the Avengers characters is a perfect example. I don't want to see someone else play Batman.

    I think his Batman would fit perfect. Look who we are talking about its Batman for goodness sakes. He should be out of place with Superman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and all the other gifted DC heroes. He is the only main one that has no super abilities. That never changed in the comics all these years. It would be no different than if we (as humans) had visitations with other world beings. This world is real. Does Nolan have to have a close encounter to reconsider. That's how it would be if Batman (Nolan's) met Superman for the first time. Oh wow you are not from this world now lets fight these bad guys and bring justice to the universe I thought us humans only lived in. It is possible!

      Nolan's Batman wouldn't fit with the Justice League unless he was working part-time with them. The two would be contrasting styles even if the movie is being dubbed as "dark and gritty." The tone of the whole movie would be unbalanced and off-putting. If you're talking about the comics you know Nolan's Batman is underpowered than what he is in the comics as well as his intelligence. There is a more realistic component to Nolan's Batman that just wouldn't fit with a JL movie. I mean let's say there's an alien invasion in the JL movie, is Bruce Wayne going to turn to Lucius Fox who had alien-tech armor developed "just in case"? Nolan's Batman level of intelligence is low compared to the comics, Wayne wouldn't know what to do about defending aliens from Earth. Can you honestly tell if Nolan's Batman is "one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the world" or if he even is the "world's greatest detective"? Nolan has said before that his "world of Batman is that of grounded reality." Just look at Batman Begins and how Nolan ignores the movie/play young Bruce goes to see. Instead of having Bruce watch a Zorro film and feel like he was a hero himself and watch his parents murdered right in front of him (the reason why he dawns the Batman mantle), Nolan wanted an original idea of having Bruce watch a play about bats and become afraid of bats. It emphasized the importance of bats to Bruce and that becoming a superhero is wholly an original idea on Nolan's part. "It is for this reason Nolan believes other DC characters do not exist in the universe of his film; otherwise, Wayne's reasons for taking up costumed vigilantism would have been very different." So again Nolan's Batman just wouldn't fit whatsoever with a Justice League.

      You put it very well there! I couldn't agree more...
      Moreover Nolan is finishing up his story either by killing batman or forcing him to retire to get a normal life, we'll come to know soon. So it doesn't make much sense to revive or 're-cape' his Bruce as batman. It ought to be a different Batman, otherwise every great thing Nolan did with this trilogy so far will be undone. WB/DC should respect Nolan's work and leave it untouched just like Nolan is gonna do with Heath's legendary character in TDKR.

  You are correct also. The one big prolbem I have had with the Avengers (really Marvel Studios) is them changing out the Hulk. I really do not care if Ruffalo is a better Banner than Edward Norton. Norton was good enough to play the Hulk, and the fact that they had no continuity with that character alone was enough to upset me, and should upset other fans too, whether you like The Avengers or not. You pick them to play these characters, than you need to take care of them. I realize that comparing Norton to Bale is a little weak because of everything Bale has done for Batman, but I really believe that Norton was on his way. the timing was off to re-boot the Hulk, but it seems like more people liked it once they gave it a chance. Again kind of like what happened with Batman Begins just on a little bit of a smaller scale. Get Bale in the Justice League Movie!!!

This is what I have been saying man. There is no need to re-boot Batman. I would love to see Nolan set up the new Batman to take Bruce Wayne's place in TDKR. I would like to see them do more of a re-quel rather than a re-boot. My theory has been that Bane will mess up Bruce Wayne and knock him out of comission so that the tourch can be handed over to the next Batman. A cotinuation of Nolan's Batman, but also a new begining as far as a new Batman goes. It would allow Christain Bale to still play Bruce Wayne, but not Batman anymore. I believe this is the only thing that will work, otherwise, just like you said, no one is going to want to see another version of Batman on screen in regards to a complete re-boot. I really do not believe that this re-boot nonsense will continue to last in Hollywood.

  Just a random thought here (probably way off the boil). The Dark Knight Rises is set 8-12 years after the events of The Dark Knight. is it not?
  With this gap in the timeline surely it's possible that Bruce Wayne has adopted Dick Grayson (who was 10 years old when he took on the Robin mantle in the comics) and trained him extensively so that he could potentially take on the Batman role in the future, although I doubt this was Bruce's actual intention.It's possible that straight after the events of the Dark Knight Bruce adopted Dick, presumably as he's looking for something meaningful to spend his time on as opposed to being a playboy waster, Dick inevitably finds out about Batman and as he grows older (and sees that crime continues to plague Gotham/other cities) he becomes frustrated that Bruce refuses to don the mantle again. Dick (now 17/18) goes to Lucius Fox and commissions him to make a suit, Lucius undoubtedly suspects what Dick is doing but doesn't protest to it as he likely sees the need for another vigilantly to help stop crime now that Batman is gone. With his suit made Dick engages in an argument with Bruce over the future of Batman, likely saying that if Bruce doesn't do anything he will do it himself, Bruce still refuses to become Batman again so Dick leaves and takes on the Nightwing persona.
  If at the end of The Dark Knight Rises it is truly the case that Bruce can no longer be Batman it is likely that he will reach out to Dick (now more experienced from crimefighting elsewhere) and have him take on the Batman mantle (as Bruce now see's the need for Batman again). This in turn means that for a JLA movie we could see Dick Grayson as Batman.
  Again, this is all speculation on my part (literally just wrote it down as it came to me sitting down at my computer).

    That was awesome. See I love theories like this. It is well thought out and it makes perfect sense. It would definitely work in this interpretation of Batman. With that 8 year layover so much can be done with that. Whether they did do something like that or not we will all have to see, but, in my opinion, this could work to keep Batman going instead of re-booting it completely. On a side note, it would be so awesome if us fans put our foot down about all this re-booting garbage. See I really don't care if a re-boot of Spiderman is better than Rami's version. It just sets trends for something to keep following in its footsteps. I think what Marvel's Kevin Feige said, in regards to Ironman a few weeks back, is the answer to avoid all these re-boots. He said that after awhile you just James Bond the franchise. Bring in someone else, when it is time to do so, and just keep going. I only hope that DC Comics (WB) does this first. Preferebly with Batman.

      Yeah I get what you're saying. With the Bond films you get a 'new' Bond each time, he's got the same name throughout but in terms of personality and everything else he's almost always completely different to previous incarnations of the character.
      This sort of thing can easily be done with Batman, the beauty of it is that you don't have to have Bruce Wayne as Batman, you could have Dick Grayson, Tim Drake (thats an unlikely option) or Damian Wayne or even Terry McGinness if need be. In fact I'd go as far as saying that they don't need to reboot Batman after the Nolan trilogy. As far as I'm aware Nolan is just wrapping up things for Bruce Wayne as Batman, if my previously stated theory is correct it could be that the film ends with someone else (Dick Grayson) taking over the Batman mantle. I'd also say its possible that my above theory could occur after the events of the upcoming film, who's to say that after being put out of action as Batman Bruce Wayne doesn't go out and adopt Dick Grayson and proceed to train him to take the role of Batman someday? It'd be messing about with the timeline of events set out in the comics but it'd probably work out in the long run of things. I'm not sure if something like this would happen (non-comicbook readers would struggle to comprehend everything without a good explanation) but I think it could technically work out and we'd be able to avoid a pointless reboot. In addition it's not as though Nolan used up all the main villains in his trilogy (something the Rami Spiderman series did which would've made a continuation difficult. You could easily do a trilogy based around Dick Grayson as Batman and have enough worthwhile villains for him to tackle. Nolan has done Scarecrow, Joker, Two Face, Ra's Al Ghul and Bane (don't really class Catwoman as a villain anymore). A Dick Grayson trilogy could see him tackle guys like Penguin, Hush, Hugo Strange, Killer Croc, Mr Freeze, The Riddler, Black Mask or even throw Red Hood into the mix (could be a bit ambitious though).

      I really like what you have come up with so far. I really would love to see something like what you have said along with new villans in the mix for the next trilogy, if they went this route. What about The Justice League though? To keep it true to the comics, as much as possible, wouldn't be better to have Bruce Wayne's Batman as part of the Justice League movie instead of Dick Grayson? If this was the case, what do you think about all the fans, at least on this website, that really want Christian Bale to play Batman? Do you think he will if they meet his price? Would you like him to be Batman in a Justice League movie? I really hope so myself, and I also hope that WB gets someone like Nolan if not Nolan himself to direct it. Things work better, it seems, when the movie companies do not interfere with the directors view of things. Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't that what happened with Rami's Spiderman 3? I thought I heard he really did not want to put Venom in his third movie. Had he not done this, there would still be room for him to have done his movies with a whole list of villians to work with: Venom, Carnage, Hob-Goblin, and Lizard.

      Couldn't respond to your other comment for some reason, so I'm putting my response here.
      It's an interesting conundrum we find ourselves in now. Personally I've never particularly cared for any of the other heroes, other than Batman, in the JLA. If you were to offer me either a great JLA trilogy or a great Batman trilogy (that tied in well with Nolan's work and didn't just reboot everything) I'd take the latter every single time. You are right that it'd be more suitable if the Bruce Wayne Batman was the one used in a JLA movie, but if they do decide to use Bruce Wayne the movie will have to reboot the character simply because if what we suspect will happen in the TDKR does happen it would be implausible to have Bale taking on the Bruce Wayne/Batman role again.
      The other issue you have with trying to 'continue' from where Nolan left off in a JLA movie (with regards to the Batman character), is that Nolan's Batman isn't really suitable for the JLA to begin with. Nolan's Batman is very much a playboy billionaire who has decided to spend loads of money suiting up and fighting crime. He's not anything like the Batman of the comics, he's not a detective and he's certainly not got genius level intelligence, he may have undergone a lot of training but again he isn't like the Batman of the comics who has mastered something like 70-odd martial arts. Batman in the JLA should be able to outsmart his allies, he's supposed to be a great tactician and able to compensate for his lack of superpowers with his intelligence. As much as I love Nolan/Bale's Batman I don't think it'd work in a JLA setting.
      My heart tells me that Bale should be Bruce Wayne/Batman in the JLA movie, but with everything that is likely to occur in TDKR my head is telling me that it just won't work out well. I don't think the Nolan Batman is suited to the JLA and I think if they try to force the Nolan Batman into the JLA movie it might detract from the trilogy. Nolan always planned a trilogy of Batman films. Trilogy's generally have one final ending point where it should be impossible for the main character (in this case Bruce Wayne) to be the subject of anymore films, e.g they could have Bane break Batman's back in TDKR, an act which should pretty much stop Bruce from ever being Batman again (given how realistic the Nolan films have tried to be). In a case like that the directors/writers of a JLA movie would have to (if they planned on using Bale and Nolan's Batman) fit in something about how Batman having his back broken didn't actually signal the end of Bruce as Batman. If they were to do that it'd make the ending to TDKR incredibly hollow and meaningless, and thats something I don't want to see.
      As for Rami and Spiderman 3? Have to say I don't know if that was the case or not. I loved Spiderman as a kid but I never really liked what Rami did with the character or his casting. I don't agree with doing reboot's for the sake of it but frankly Spiderman did need to restart, especially now that you have all the Avengers movies (Spiderman was/is part of the Avengers in the comics).

      One thing I must say, in regards to everything we have been discussing, I think there are 3 types of comic book movie adaptation fans out there that make these movies, when done right, a pretty huge success at the box office. First we have the hard core comic book fans, which know these characters almost like as if they were part of their own family. Second, we have the hard core comic book fans, like me, who know these comic book characters very well through the Saturday morning cartoons and TV Series that they were a part of more than their true background stories that come from getting to know them through reading the comics such as, The Justice League Saturday morning cartoon, Spiderman And Friends, and The Incredible Hulk TV series just to name a few. Finally, we have the fans that just know these comic book characters by name and face, but have never really sat down and read a comic book, or probably watched little to none of the TV Shows that these characters were a part of. With that said, I think these movies that are done the way the director wants them to be done, do very well in the movies because the movie's audience, in my opinion, is largly made up of your type 2 and type 3 fans. As a type 2 fan myself, it kind of gets me upset when I find out how much has been changed from what the comics tell us about these characters. It does not get me as upset as it seems to get the hard core comic reading fans. The closest that I get to being that upset is when they do not stick closer to the costume of the characters, because that is how I , as a fan have come to recognize them first. If there are more fans like this, than maybe Nolan's Batman would work in a Justice League movie even if it was someone else, besides Bruce Wayne, that played Batman. I am a big Superman fan myself, but I really respect that you would rather see more Batman than a Justice League movie first. I think, for me, I would love to see more DC characters on the big screen just by themsleves even before a Justice League movie. I don't how much of this will happen, but I would like to see something like Cyborg done in addition to Wonder-Woman, and Flash.

I want a JLA movie where you have to give batman his bad ass attitude toward the other members, him being in there more to prevent a possible cathasthrope for being with too many powerful guys and girls, him being the wise man, the wisecracker that we get in the animated justice league and in the comics, he IS the BADASS of the group and the most important member, he has to be old, and by old i mean 40´s to 50´s, i dont care if they got wrong the other guys, i hope they cast well batman, after Bale its a difficult spot to follow, and bring me and awesome hot wonder woman, if you cast well batman you have 90% of the movie made!

I think any superhero can be made "realistic" with 3 simple rules (heck, Donner's Superman violated rule 1 and still was pretty realistic for the time): Rule 1 (the hardest): a 'real' looking suit. I actually liked the Superman Returns one, for instance. Rule 2: It's about Clark Kent, Wallly West, Hal Jordan, not aboout Superman, Flash, GL... Try to get the characters "off costume" as much as posible... think about it, a real wolrd superhero only uses his costume in a fight.. so if Supes, Bats and Flash are having a meeting, for instance, make it in "normal clothes", not superhero ones.. Rule 3: Inception FX... i.e. only use computer CGI when absolutely necessary, and stick to "real-life" FX as much as possible.

DC has always been better than marvel. Thats why every move that has come out like captain America and Thor and Iron man is acceptable for children to go see. Altho they are good movies, but they don't hold a candle to movies like TDK trilogy.DC is serious,dark and mature. Thats why batman is so popular.It's alot more real world darkness, less flashy kid stuff.
So if the marvel avengers made such a huge hit. Think how much better TJL will be when not just adapted to just batman but every other DC hero.
I just wish nolan was doing the JLA film & bale was still in it :)

To make this work they need to take a good look at Avengers Assemble and the work Joss Whedon did there, films with multiple heroes can go wrong very easily and Avengers is the best role model available for them to work off of in my opinion.

Also, can't see anyone but Bale as Batman really, he's the definitive Batman for me. In addition, I can't help but think that, for the major characters at least, they should do individual movies (as Marvel did prior to the Avengers) so as to give people a good knowledge of characters. This would allow them to avoid either going too much into backstory or simply brushing over it (both of which would be bad for the movie).

They should start setting up the Justice League next year with Man of Steel. Have a seen after the credits to set it up. If they don't and reboot Superman again then we won't see this Justice League movie til at least 2017.

The best root to go down would be something similar to Watchmen, it would mean no individual back story needed and the heroes would just be harder than normal people. It was believable in Watchmen and needed little explanation because it was executed well.

As for casting that would be hard to call, keep Cavill as Superman, he seems fairly gritty, maybe a bulked up Fassbender as Batman, Gosling as Green Lantern, Jeremy Renner as Flash and possibly Charlize Theron as WW.

I doubt Renner will be the Flash. Seeing as he's under contract to be Hawkeye with Marvel. Could definitely see him doing it, but I don't think it would work.

Anyone know if WB has settled their case regarding Superman's rights? If WB loses its rights to Superman then they cannot put Superman in the new Justice League movie. It wouldn't be right making a Justice League movie without Superman...

The Flash TV series in the 90's was great especially the Pilot movie. Very dark and fairly gritty for the flash and the costume didn't look too bad either. I definitely feel like they should do what Marvel did with The Avengers, set up each character, get their origin stories out of the way with little tie-ins here and there maybe even tie in the Green Arrow show that's coming up this fall (difficult but might work). Then for the movie, have them all come together for 2 and half to three hours of Justice League Ownagge backed by a blaring Hans Zimmer score.
Just my thoughts on it.

As long as Christian Bale's Batman and DC doesn't screw it up like MARVEL did to their super hero movies with Fantastic Four, Spider-man Avengers and X-men.. Then I'm good.
