on Will Beall to write 'Justice League' movie, reports Variety

Back in March of 2011 Warner Bros. president Jeff Robinov expressed interest in bringing DC's heroes together on the big screen in a Justice League movie. Now, according to a report from Variety, we've learned that this project may be further along than we thought.

While Disney and Marvel were busy shooting "The Avengers" last year, Warner Brothers quietly began getting its own all-star superhero pic back on track, tapping "Gangster Squad" scribe Will Beall to write "Justice League," based on the WB-controlled stable of DC Comics superheroes. Beall has yet to turn in his "Justice League" script, though he has become a favorite scribe of Warners.

You may remember that in 2007 George Miller signed on to direct a live action Justice League film. Characters were cast, costumes were designed, and story boards were completed. The film never took off though, and it was canceled about a year later. It’ll be interesting to see how things pan out this time around.

it would be a shame to see the fighting each other routine. green lantern punched by wonder woman after a sexist joke, ryan reynolds style. everybody fighting an alien invasion (i guess there's no other threat that can put a superhero team together to provide the box office success for a summer blockbuster nonsense movie). batman watching over the bald guys who always find a way to get the kryptonite. somebody dies at the end and superman flyes around the planet to turn back time and fix it.
if they'll go that way, i hope at least they will make it stylish.

Watchmen, Sin City and (Nolan's) Batman have drastically changed the way super heroes and comic books are interpreted for the big screen. Everything these days seems to get painted with a "dark, gritty and visceral" brush these days. I'm not complaining. I like that way of looking at things, but it just seems to detract from the fantastical "over-the-top" super heroes we all grew up with.

I'm certainly not looking to entertain a feud between Marvel and DC... but it seems to me like Marvel is portraying their characters in more of a fantasy/fun/comic-book-esque manner than DC is. I admit I don't know much about DC character mythos, so maybe it's the world these characters inhabit that dictate their powers and persona, but so far DC sure presents itself in a much darker more subdued light than Marvel. Take Thor's fantastical rainbow light bridge as an example, compared to the raping, war mongering and violence of Watchmen.

My point is that, it's a complete waste of breath to even bother comparing Justice League to Avengers. They won't be portrayed the same way at all. DC and Marvel have always been different, and even moreso in the movie industry. Certainly do not expect DC to follow suit and develop each JLA member in a movie beforehand. That's what Marvel has done. You can be guaranteed it will be vastly different.

The problem with a justice league movie is that Batman movies are better by themselves. I DAMN sure don't want them tailoring a Batman movie just to fit a crappy justice league movie in the future.

and yet...you can't really make a justice league movie without batman.

Nolans Batman will live on. Batman can only get dark from here, there is no way we are going back to a camp batsy! HELLO Marvel Fanboys, have you not seen Watchmen, the mature super hero flick?! Amazing, probably the next best hero flick to the Nolan series. Avengers was okay, storyline was weak, Loki & Hulk made the film. Man of Steel has the Watchman director tied to it so it will be nothing short of Epic. As for a Justice League movie, screw the character build up! Like come on?!?! Its the fucking Justice League, Throw them straight into the adventure, show how a lifes of heroism has effected them.

Martian Manhunter has to be almost feelingless, Wondow Woman a powerful strong hardheaded female, Nolans Bats & Superman dark (which after man of steel, im sure he will be) and flash a small town hero who happens to elevate his hero career by helping the more well known heroes. Fuck GL, after that trash of a movie i think its best he stays out of the movie business for a long while. If theres a JL sequel, add GL and Aquaman.

And can i just say, Nolans Batman is the best thing to happen the cinema itself let alone Live Action Super Hero movies. Joker was iconic, as im sure Bane & Catwoman will be. And for the humanoid who commented on the fact that Super flicks shouldn' be dark, your insane. They are superheroes, their life revolves around saving the world over & over, thats surely not healthy for the mind, and that shit needs to be shown, plus i feel like the Villains in Marvel are straight out the comics, like they don't make me fear for the characters safety. After Joker blew up Rachel, all cards on the table, hes capable of killing everyone and anyone. Nolan makes his villains seem like twisted terrorists with their own ideologies of how the world should be. Loki is a little rascal, but not a menace. Joker cannot be reasoned with, and the Joker would even make his fellow 'Villains' feel very uncomfortable.

In conclusion to my ranting comment, if the JL movie wants to follow anyones direction, it should be Watchmen.

I highly doubt they would produce movies of each character as a means to explain their backgrounds. It won't be anything like Marvel characters into the Avengers movie. That was an ongoing project since the Iron Man film. DC/WB can't do that. It would take years and years to establish enough background on their characters. If anything, they'll just create a JLA movie unattached to any previous DC movie and bank on the fact that it is sheer fun and the audience won't need much character development. As long as a movie is fun and exciting, it shouldn't need much of a reason to exist. This movie's success isn't contingent  on knowing about Superman's Kryptonian ancestry. Or Wonder Woman's amazonian planet. Or any other other origins.

That's why if that were to happen the movie would be an absolute failure/flop with no character development. Most people know these characters blindfolded but doesn't mean they're in love with the actor/actress who portray these characters. Character development is huge. No background information? Then why make it live-action when animation would fit much more with that?

It seems reactionary.  It's also a big risk considering that DC has one viable film property.  Granted, Man of Steel should do well.  Yet with Green Lantern there are no guarantees.  Wonder Woman?  I'm in.  Justice League?  Way, way too soon.

This is what I just don't get. We constantly here that Nolan's Batman would not work in a Justice League Movie because Batman is in his own universe. That is the silliest thing I have ever heard. There is no reason why Nolan's Batman would not work in a Justic League movie. The fact that he is Batman is enough reason that it would work. Batman (to the best of my knowledge) is the only Justice League hero that is mortal or not gifted special ability wise. It seems like that is where the fear in placing Nolan's Batman in a Justice League movie is. Why is it so far fetched to imagine that one day Nolan's Batman meets Superman on the big screen? Keep the same dark tone that Batman has and build all the DC characters around him. He is the star of DC comics anyways. Your Batman would work in a Justice League movie man! For goodness sakes he is Batman! It just seems to me like this too realistic interpretation of Batman is the reason that Nolan will not do it. I say make it as realistic as Batman already is and lets get on with it.

i have to say, sometimes i think warner bros is doing that on purpose...ruining dc movies!
i mean, after all these years of planing, was really a succes of the avengers like that neccesary to finally realise this project? i just hope they don't rush. because i don't want them to do it good or perfect, but right! they just have to do it right!
take that wonder woman thing. i don't like the idea of hiring the green lantern-writer for it. because he already screwed up the gl-movie. too much humor, barely action. and the flash or aquaman movies aren't even made yet, and they already writing a jl-flick. if they make it that way, they'll definetly ruin it!!!

i mean paramount did it right! they build a path to the avengers-project by making good solo movies with glimpes to the other superhero-flicks or cameos. like completing a puzzle with every movie, just to bring it on at the right time.
and warner & dc should do that the same way! first building up a few years with solo-projects and THEN go for it!

WARNER & DC, DON'T EMBARASS US TO MARVEL!!!

Doing a Superman Vs. Batman movie first would get things rolling and reintroduce both characters in a world where other heroes exist.

reasons it wont be like the Avengers movie:

    1. Warner Brothers has the chance to examine everything piece of work that Marvel did
    2. DC has more interesting villians/heros! (honestly iron man didnt fight anyone meaning ful yet, neither did thor or cap!)
    3. Batman is awesome
    4. Man of Steel might start the possible JL build up
    5. Justice League would be even more intense because imagine the action would blow Avengers away
    6. Batman is King!

and honestly if i was going to right a JL movie i would start with using the injustice gang, then for a possible sequel you bring in the big hitters like Darkseid or Brainiac, but to bring them all together i would go injustice gang route

Oh, puh-leeeeeeeeeeeeze.  The only interesting DC hero, at least of the ones pictured above, is Batman.  The rest are utterly boring.  Batman is the only one of the DC heroes pictured above that I like.

Cap fighting Red Skull isn't "meaningful"?  Red Skull is Cap's nemesis, just as Joker is to Batman.  How can that be anything but "meaningful"?

      1. Adam Avatar
        Adam

LOL Red Skull didn't do shit in the movie. This is what Marvel fans don't get. They're happy just seeing characters instead of thinking about how they're used in the movie. The Joker was 100x more menacing than Red Skull was, and he's suppose to be a super soldier. Red Skull was forgettable in the movie.

        1. Crucisnh Avatar
          Crucisnh

I'd say that it's a difference of story telling and the nature of the character. Joker is a do-er. Red Skull in WW2 was more of a leader who delegated rather than did for himself. For that matter, as I recall, Lex Luthor has always been more of a delegater and manipulator than a do-er in the movies. Not every villain is a do-er. And not every villain is "menacing" by nature. Some villains are suave and charming, and yet still very evil.

          1. Adam Avatar
            Adamreplying to Crucisnh

It is a difference of story telling, but not the nature of the character. What's the point of Red Skull being a super-soldier if he just delegates? He does a lot more than delegate in the comics that's for sure. Lex Luthor is no way like you describe either. He has his own power suit to fight Superman 1 on 1. He makes his own high tech weapons and everything. They could have written Red Skull to be more dangerous, but they didn't even want to show Nazis.

Marvel movies leave a lot out, but their fans seem much more easy to please than DC fans. They didn't really make true origin movies that explored their characters. They made stepping stones that led up to the Avengers.

Hi delusional DC fanboy! You only have one money maker in the movie business and that is Batman. Then you only have one other hero who's made moderate success in the box office and that's Superman. Take that away and you have nothing. Its funny that you bring up villains considering DC's one trick pony aka Batman, once again, is the only hero to fight grade A villains in his movies. Superman has fought Lex Luthor, a green rock, 3 Kryptonians, a green rock, Nuclear Man, a green rock, Lex Luthor again, a green rock, and in the new movie he fights Zod and his pack of losers.....again. Don't even get me started on the Green Lantern flop. Marvel has more success in the movie department because their heroes are more relatable to us. That's the only reason why Batman is so popular! If you got your head out of Batman's ass, maybe you could think clearer.

I guess none of the doubters has ever seen an episode of JL and JLU. Even as animated series they are still 10X better than anything Marvel OR even Warner has done live action. And I even include Nolan's movies which are very good.

Again if Warner had any sense they'd not even bother with individual movies for the main JL characters. I mean really who doesn't know Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman?! (how aobut The Flash?) Even if they don't know their complete back-story like a comic geek; you got to be living under a rock to not know them. They don't need a series of movies to explain who they are.

If the whole set of the successful animated series Warner have done prove anything it's that with the right people behind it and the right stories you can make something great. The reason they've succeeded and are considered good by most people who know is that they were done right. The crappy DC live action stuff that failed was NOT.

What the world needs now (or in a couple year) is 2 hours and 45 minutes of all IMAX CGI JL movie :)

Animation and live action are two different fields of entertainment. I was focusing on who has a better track record with live action films. I'm not going to deny that DC is killing Marvel in the animated department. Its like Marvel quit doing those to focus on the live action films. You can't just deny one thing though, Marvel has had more success in the movie business due their heroes being able to appeal to a broader audience. Spider-Man, Wolverine, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man, X-men, Fantastic Four, Blade, Ghost Rider, Punisher, Daredevil, Elektra, and even Howard the Duck have all had a movie released in theaters. The DC movies are sorely limited to Superman, Batman, Catwoman, and Green Lantern. If you want some giggles I even add in the Supergirl movie. ;)

Marvel quit doing animation? What an ignorant Marvel fan. They were never in the game. Marvel has more success in movies because they sold the rights of their characters to other studios. You don't know shit which is typical for a Marvel fan. By the way DC doesn't even have a movie studio. It's all WB. Marvel Studios is it's own movie studios. Does Marvel have more success in the movie business than WB?

Ultimate Avengers 1, Ultimate Avengers 2, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Hulk vs Wolverine, Hulk vs Thor, Next Avengers Heroes of Tomorrow, Planet Hulk, and Thor: Tales of Asgard....yeah they aren't in the animation department. I said its "like" Marvel quit doing animation. I never said they stopped. And another thing I'm not a biased comic fanboy like you, I respect DC and read most of their comics but I want don't get into pointless arguments about fictional characters on the internet. That's just goofy. Besides you really can't bring out the Marvel has its own movie studio excuse when they've released multiple films before Iron Man. I can care less about WB. That's not what we are focusing on. This all about Marvel and DC. The animation field belongs to DC but live action field belongs to Marvel due to their higher level of success in marketing multiple heroes besides their two most popular ones. Stop trying to make excuses for a comic book company.

Truth be told superman has much more interesting villains than the movies lead you to believe. He has darksied, metallo, brainiac, the other kryptonian criminals, livewire,mr myxysplk and many more.Same goes for green lantern, the movie just did not do the characters any justice at all. The reason those movies flopped was because the writers and directors choose to ignore source material and do things their way, the studios throw things in that ruin the story or they write something in the movie that insults the fans and gives the wrong impression like how a lot of people think that mr freeze is an ice man who like to give lame freeze puns or that galactus is a massive chunk of space gas just like the paralax villain from the green lantern film when in fact he is a mind control villain that can posses his victims and control their actions. Marvel had more success in the live action department because there are more people who know how to do the characters justice, most of the time.

The only reason The Avengers did so well was because they took their time and constructed a team over the course of 4 years and 5 movies. If they're gonna write a Justice League movie before the Batman reboot, before a decent Green Lantern, before Wonder Woman, before Superman even comes out..... They're just gonna ruin it, and it's gonna flop, and they're gonna be all like "Why didn't it do well?"

Just. F*cking. Wait. It will be worth it, WB.

I'm not sure that I'd go so far as to say that it was the "only" reason.  Those build-up films essentially were the character development for the Avengers movie.  They meant that the Avengers movie didn't have to spend any serious time developing its characters and could pend more time on story and action.  If DC/WB tries to go straight to a JL movie without similar build-up movies, the heroes may end up seeming like empty suits (pardon the pun) without sufficient character development.
