on The Dark Knight Rises: new info, interviews, and photos from Empire

The long awaited July 2012 issue of Empire magazine hit newsstands today, and it's packed with lots of new info, interviews, and photos from The Dark Knight Rises. I just finished reading the article and wanted to share some interesting bits of news with you.

  • In Fall of 2008, Christopher Nolan and co-writer David Goyer came up with the ending to The Dark Knight Rises. They didn't know what the plot would be, or which villains would terrorize Gotham, but they knew it would be the final Batman movie in their trilogy, and they knew how they wanted it to end. Goyer explained that the ending in The Dark Knight Rises is exactly what they talked about 4 years ago -- it's completely unchanged. When Goyer saw that final scene from The Dark Knight Rises, he got a lump in his throat.
  • More than a third of the film, 1 hour, was shot in IMAX.
  • The Dark Knight Rises is Wally Pfister's last movie as Director of Photography, he'll be moving on to pursue a directing career.
  • As I mentioned earlier this week, Nolan confirmed that The Joker will not be addressed at all in The Dark Knight Rises. He was also nervous about adding Catwoman, but his brother Jonah convinced him that she needed to be part of the trilogy.
  • David Goyer said that at the premiere of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. executives were already talking about a villain for The Dark Knight Rises -- "it's gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio...".
  •  Christopher Nolan confirmed that Anne Hathaway's character, Selina Kyle, is never referred to as "Catwoman" in the script.

There's also some new photos in the magazine, as well as some that we've seen before. Be sure to pick up the July 2012 issue of Empire for the full interviews and even more photos. The only decision you'll have to make is which cover you'll buy... Batman or Catwoman? To quote Robin from Batman Forever -- why not both? Yeah. That just happened.

actually in the animated batman year one movie batman says fuck and i think that was the first time a batman movie has ever done that. but i do actually kinda hope they say fuck in this like in a good emotional yell or something. its just realistic if you ask me.

    Two completely random TDKR questions...

1). When will we know how long this movie is?
2). Does anyone in this movie fire the F-bomb at least once (a first for a Batman movie)?

Those are the only two things I want to know at this point.

It has an official MPAA rating of PG-13. I doubt very much there's an f-bomb in there.

      1. scottishpunk Avatar
        scottishpunk

I've noticed a trend with a good majority of PG-13 movies...they usually include at least one F-bomb. If they're lucky, like THE SOCIAL NETWORK, they'll get away with two. This is the first time a Batman movie has really ever been cited for any kind of language in it's MPAA rating, which is why I feel there is a likelihood that it might happen.

I'd give anything to hear Batman tell Bane to f**k off just once. LOL :P

With a PG-13 Rating, a movie can only have one f-bomb, so very unlikely.

    4. Josh Avatar

But part of the rating is "language" and there has been language the other one's, but this is the first time it's included in the rating, so I assume there has to be one f-bomb!

I had the weirdest dream last night. I dreamt that I was one of the Rapid City Monuments football players preparing to shoot the scene by dodging multiple orange cones on the football field. So then after that, I  got to watch Tom Hardy act and he said "I AM GOING TO DESTROY GOTHAM CITY AND RIP BATMANS FUCKING SPINE FROM HIS MOTHERFUCKING BACK, AND EVERYONE IN THIS CITY WILL FUCKING DIE, I GIVE YOU MY WORD."

That would be pretty bad. But Johnny Depp would be even worse. He's the most overrated shitty actor ever. He acts the exact same in every movie. This Tim Burton and Johnny Depp trend must come to an end. They're destroying classic movies and stories!

Depp and DiCaprio are both great actors... I just don't see them fitting well in Nolan's Gotham as any character, really (though Nolan may have been able to surprise me, so who knows?)
And sure. Depp has been typecasted a lot recently, but so what? I just avoid those movies and respect his abilities as an actor. Although, I wish he would break the cycle and do something new, but what are you gonna do?

I disagree. Dicaprio is good. Every movie he's been in he's shown us how talented he is. From one of his first movies, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, to huge dramas like Titanic to more abstract ones like The Beach. All great! Depp, however, hasn't shown us a decent film since Edward Scissorhands or Fear and Loathing. Besides those 2 movies, I think he's terrible.

    1) I'm not surprised that the script never refers to Catwoman by name. Harvey Dent was never directly referred to as Two-Face. Even The Joker never calls himself The Joker. It's a moniker others have assigned to him. I wish that Nolan had treated Batman the same way. Rather than Bruce calling himself Batman, it would've been more realistic if the media gave him that name. But I guess he had to have the iconic "I'm Batman" line.

    2) I'm glad to see Wally Pfister moving onto directing. He deserves more credit for making this series a success. The look of his films is fantastic. Glad he won an Oscar.

    3) WB executives are going to ruin Batman someday, just like they did before. DiCaprio as The Riddler? He's an OK actor who did a good job in Inception. But he can't really disappear into a role. Plus he'd be too expensive.

    4) I don't think Batman will die in the end. I hope the ending is similar to the ending from Batman Begins, only with Gordon and Bruce's roles reversed. I want Gordon to learn the truth about Batman.

Bruce: I never said thank you.

Gordon: And you'll never have to.

But the title of the movie is.... The Dark Knight Rises. That will be the final statement in this movie. You ever notice you don't see any credits in Nolan's batman movies until the end. Like in The Dark Knight when commissioner Gordan calls him a dark knight and then boom... For the first time in the movie the title appears. I believe it will be the same thing with this movie.

I completely agree with everything you said except for the ending part. Although that would be a great ending, I feel like that ends the series with Gordon as the true hero(don't get me wrong I love Gordon), the series has to end with batman as the greatest hero of all.

I would personally love it if that scene in trailer 3 with batman standing on a really tall building looking at all of Gotham in the day would be the last scene. Showing that Batman has finally brought light back to Gotham.

      1. ProgressiveDog Avatar

The problem with your ending is that it leaves the door open for another movie. Nolan has stated that the movie ends the series.

    4. ED Avatar

Well him calling himself batman has to do with the fact that he's basing his symbol/legend on something frightful, something that Wayne himself is scared of, Bats.  It's a major part of the story, including that perfect opening scene when young Bruce falls down the abandoned well and is attacked by bats.  Bats are a key element throughout BB. If he'd let other people name him then there wouldn't have been a batcave, batarangs or a bat symbol, all of which are crafted early in the film by batman himself before he's a public figure.  And what would Bruce hallucinate about in those early league of shadows scenes?

      1. Guest Avatar
        Guest

I think BigNoseDog is right. Yes, the symbol of a bat, the baterangs all the bat-paraphernalia are based on Bruce's encounter with bats and their provocation of fear. But he didn't have to call himself Batman. Bruce could have donned a cape and all that and still not have an official name for his alter-ego. It would be more realistic if society saw this caped crusader who looked like a bat and decided to refer to him as Batman. Maybe the headline of a newspaper would read "The Bat Man Strikes Again!"

        1. ProgressiveDog Avatar
          ProgressiveDog

Exactly. You can dress up like a bat and let the public decide what to call you. Batman, The Batman, The Bat, whatever. Frankly, Bruce doesn't strike me as the type who cares.

Notice how Gordon dubs him The Dark Knight. Bruce doesn't know that. He wasn't around to hear it. Should he have called up Batman to get his approval?

While I agree with most of your points, I don't think that Leo DiCaprio is just an OK actor! He did a great job in Blood Diamond, Shutter Island etc besides Inception.

      1. ProgressiveDog Avatar
        ProgressiveDog

He was good in Blood Diamond and his acting has certainly improved since his Titanic days. But I still think he's limited. His role in Inception wasn't very demanding. A lot of actors could've played that role. I believe a big reason he was cast is due to his resemblance to Chris Nolan. The movie is a metaphor for moviemaking with DiCaprio in the director role. What better way to show that than casting an actor who looks like the actual director?

        1. EBo Avatar

Funny you should say that, as even Tom Hardy mentioned that about Leo's resemblance, but more importantly his own deliberate mimicking of Nolan, in his interview with The Guardian a couple years ago:

I like to flatter myself into believing that the character I played was actually Chris Nolan. I felt he was key to Eames and I latched on to him and his mannerisms. I think Leonardo DiCaprio looks like Chris and Chris looks like Leo – not to upset anyone. I think they're related, actually. In fact, you start to think: are all of these people in the film actually Chris?

David Goyer said that at the premiere of The Dark Knight, Warner Bros. executives were already talking about a villain for The Dark Knight Rises — “it’s gonna be The Riddler, and we want it to be Leonardo DiCaprio…”.

I'd like to know Goyer's thoughts on that. On what basis were the Warner execs putting this out? Was the script & character written or the role outlined for Leo to be a frontrunner. Not saying Leo couldn't sell it but these guys were obviously talking out of their asses. They blindly took the popular choice for a villain and tied it to a choice actor with star power, never mind the story. Isn't that the kind of casting that gave us Arnold as Mr. Freeze? If Nolan's sticking around to keep shit like this from happening, that's a good thing.

Didn't Bale say he'd be up for a 4th film if Nolan was? I don't believe Batman is going to die, unless Bale was being very clever.

Nope, because Bale already said if Nolan has a good story for the fourth, he will be back, so...

I can give you a answer but I don't want to spoil the ending for you but Bale has already given away the ending unintentionally.

      DON'T READ BEYOND POSSIBLE SPOILER

Bale in a Interview said if Nolan had a story, and actually wanted to make a forth film he woudl do it. Leading us to believe that he does not kill him off at the end of this movie.

I don't know where Empire (Batman issue) hit news stands but it isn't in the Philadelphia area, as of My 31. The latest edition came out last Friday and features James Bond on the over.
