Tom Hardy compares The Dark Knight Rises' Bane to the Joker

The "Summer Movie Preview" issue of Entertainment Weekly is full of great new interviews from The Dark Knight Rises. A new piece of Tom Hardy's interview with the magazine has been released on EW.com. In this interview, Hardy talks about the differences between Bane and The Dark Knight's villain, the Joker.

The Joker didn’t care—he just wanted to see the world burn, and he was a master of chaos and destruction, unscrupulous and crazy. Bane is not that guy. There is a very meticulous and calculated way about Bane. There is a huge orchestration of organization to his ambition. He is also a physical threat to Batman. There is nothing vague about Bane. No jokes. He’s a very clean, clear villain.

While the Joker tried to defeat Batman mentally in The Dark Knight, Bane will be his biggest physical challenge yet. We're just about 3 months away from The Dark Knight Rises now, it'll be here before you know it!

Understood. But the Joker was way more organized than people give credit for. He made it look a lot more like chaos, and it was chaotic but he wasnt just running around throwing bombs at things. Maybe his end game was to see the world (or The Batmans own world) but his methods were extremely calculated but elusive.

Either way, I cant wait. I love Bane but dont read alot of comics but love most movies adaptions so this one is high on my list of reasons ill get caught molesting myself in the theatre this summer

I totally agree @cloWnBox. The Joker tricked Harvey Dent and was an expert manipulator. His plan was to create anarchy. It was clear and set agenda that almost worked.

Awesome, so he does have some crazy purpose for Gotham's Destruction!!

It'll be interesting comparing how Gotham was gonna be destroyed in TDK & how it'll be destroyed in TDKR

All I want from this movie is an EPIC fight between Bane & Batman that's it...a fight unlike anything i've seen...something that get's u on the edge of your seat...something extraordinary!!...something like BREAK THE BAT!!

Tom Hardy's Bane will be on par or better than Heath Ledger's Joker. That is aboslutely no knock against Ledger, Bane brings a lot to the table that can really push Batman to the edge and Nolan couldn't have picked a more perfect actor to embody him. Tom Hardy Rises!

Hardy will be awesome no doubt!!......but for him to be far better than Ledger people will have to understand him and that's a bit of an issue IMO!

  I ain't worried about his voice, you can hear his line clear as glass in the trailer. Wouldn't be shocked if that's how he'll sound the entire movie.

    I'd love it if he sounds like he did in the trailer and not like the prologue!!....but I'm talking about the majority of people who will complain and thus lowering his credits as a villain than The Joker..

I still havent got my head around what direction Nolan and Hardy are takeing BANE , with The Joker i had a clear idea of what i wanted and were they were going with him , with BANE i am still waiting for that hook that extra bit of magic that seperates the good villians from the great ones ?

My Hope is when we find out why he had to put on the mask , he becomes a sympathetic villian i find that more intresting , Just like in BB when Raz tells us about his wife that was taken from him , yes his actions are evil but people are not born evil it usaly manifests due to a particular heart break / dissapointment ?

I agree with you here EBostock, I think maybe it will have to do with his obsession with Bruce Wayne and Banes hard upbringing. I think we can gather that Nolan is going with part of his original origin with him being born and raised in prison maybe due to a crime his father committed like in the comics?

I still think we may come away from The Dark Knight Rises debating whether or not Bane was a hero. Given the propaganda we've seen for his militia, I have a feeling he'll represent a very common anti-corporate sentiment.
The fact that even his outfit has been designed to represent a merger of a revolutionary and a tyrant, I think he'll be very divisive for the audience.
That's what I'm looking forward to most, because it's so different to anything we've seen in any Batman film so far.

Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddlestone ....If someone's named Tom, Does he grow up to be a GREAT VILLAIN?!!!!

I know I'm gonna get a lot of hate for this, especially here....but I have to say it: Tom Hiddlestone's Loki is a close second to Heath's Joker!!!! the different range of emotions portrayed by him in Thor and The Avengers is impressive!!

Hope Hardy does better!!....as for Bale's Batman..Well, he's better than the whole Avengers put together!

I agree and that s why i think the reason why someone becomes a villian is more intresting than the actual acts of crime they go on to commit , Loki s choices that he made in THOR i could totaly relate to , in similar circumstances i think most people would act the way Loki did , that makes a great villian in my eyes ! I felt Ledger's Joker was closer to Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter than Loki. For both the characters (Joker and Lecter), the menace appeared easy - you could see the caged animals behind the men.

How bout Tom Cruise? Showed up at the premiere of Batman Begins and stole attention from the people who were actually in it.
As for Hiddlestone, a lot of actors could've played that role just as well.

  I don't think so at all. That role even though a comic book, required for an actor to have the skill to take it to the next level. Not many could play Loki and make it as realistic like Tom Hiddlestone

You know when I first found out that Tom Hardy was playing Bane in TDKR,I had one thing to say: That nice forger guy from Inception? " Trust me,Trust Nolan "... Yeah nice slogan Hardy! You've caught Nolan's attention.But then I started paying attention to Hardy and all he's been doing as our new villain in TDKR.And you know what?I believe in Tom Hardy.I believe that on his watch Bane's character can feel a little safer, a little more optimistic ! The way Hardy describes him, Bane is sounding a lot like Batman. Both are very clear in what they're trying to do and very calculating in achieving their goals. That sets Bane up as a great adversary for Batman. Now he's having to deal with someone very much like him.

Even though the Dark Knight Joker is pretty much nothing like the Riddler, the element of placing people in dangerous death-trap like scenero's on the boat was something the Riddler might have done. I'm glad Nolan didn't go with the Riddler. The Riddler's terrific, but the mysterious nature of him would reflect the Joker, even though they are completely different characters. Bane seems more direct. Perhaps he can find a way to tease or manipulate Batman based on something Wayne wants, like a love interest?
We'll know in a few months.

Glad to see Bane been respect as a character this time. I aways think he is a great villain but aways eh was represent for his massive force, not for he been very inteligent. Bane could be the genghis Kahn od DC Universe if he wants, but he seek challenges what he can evolve more deeper and personal with this enemies.He is a master estrategist, but above all is a predator, a hunter. Hardy will be awesome in that film!

It's said the inspiration for the mask design came from the painting "Study of Baboon" by Sir Francis Bacon. Yeah... I dont see it, but I have seen a baboon up close and those suckers are brutally violent. The male I saw was caged in a dual cyclone fence (one primary, and another four feet outside) it HURLED itself against the cage in an attempt to get at us. If Bane's brutality is in any way tied to the brutality of this animal, Batman best tighten up for a fight.

Something tells me Bane is going to use Selina's distaste for the upperclass of Gotham as a catalyst to turn her into Catwoman. Someone who acts as an anti-hero against those in power and rights (what she considers) their wrongs. Bruce is going to try and help her from falling prey to Bane's coercion, which is going to lead to his involvement as Batman vs. Bane.

I never thought of this before seeing this quality picture... the background looks like Bane is in the prison that Bruce is in as shown in previous trailers. The bars and the grey column connecting to the ceiling above Bane's head is very similar to the scene in the first teaser trailer showing Bruce doing push ups. If this is true then I am almost certain that the people repelling down into the prison are Bane's men and that Bruce and Bane will most likely have a fight in the prison. If this fight is where Bruce get injured (maybe broken back?), I assume that this confrontation must be in the early parts of the film in order to explain the cane that Bruce has. This is reinforced by what Bane said of Gotham being in ashes which I assume means that Bane isn't in Gotham yet but is planning to go soon with Bruce perhaps? Wow, this is driving my mind insane just thinking of all the possibilities... >.<
