Gary Oldman talks about shooting 'The Dark Knight Rises' in IMAX (video)

Gary Oldman is currently doing press for the US release of his new movie Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Collider's Steve Weintraub asked about The Dark Knight Rises. Here's an excerpt of what Oldman had to say about working with the IMAX cameras:

The IMAX camera, it’s a strange thing. There’s only so much film that you can put through the gate, you get two takes from a roll I guess. The thing is, it’s very loud. It’s a very noisy piece of equipment and it’s quite cumbersome, it’s quite a large—you don’t hold an IMAX camera, I mean you can steadicam it.

I think you mean "you don’t hold an IMAX camera, I mean you can't steadicam it." Yeah I can understand, there has to be a pain in the ass to work with one of this mastodontic cameras on action scenes!

Hey, there's a new type of smaller IMAX cams... or not? The thing should've been improved already! I can totally imagine Nolan shooting in 3D... would be crazy!

  Hey, 3D isn't Nolan's choice, but doesn't mean that he hates it! What i've understood about his 3D statement, is that he thinks the thing doesn't evolved enough yet. Never say never!
  PS: I'm not a 3D fan, but I've been watching some making of footage from scorsese's Hugo, and i see a very promising way to a classy director for using 3D in a story.

    Scorsese's Hugo is a masterpeice , and watching it in 3D is really the way to go. - Christopher Nolan is the type of guy that would only use 3D if it made sense and would turn out how he wanted (I think that is how he feels about using CGI , doesn't hate it but will use it if necessary).Chris would make a great 3D no doubt but until it gets better I don't think we will see one by him.

      He doesn't hate it. He's not a fan but he doesn't hate it. He dislikes the problems that come with it, such as the dimness and it being an exclusively digital format, but he has said it's an interesting development.

  3D? No. IMAX and Chris Nolan? Yes!! Please! Oh and for christmas please a visual tour of the new batcave! That would be cool! How? Using virtual reality. The kinda reality where you hear a terrifying noise coming towards you!

3D is a fad, a new toy for directors to play with when they have nothing better to do. See Michael Bay. Chris Nolan is a storyteller. If he were interested in the technology of filmmaking, you'd see more CGI in his films. But he seems more like he's interested in finding the right tools to tell the kind of story he likes to tell. IMAX lends itself well to movies like TDK and Inception because of the scale. But you don't need 3D for that. Notice how we see 3D being used more in movies with heavy CGI. That's because it really brings out the sense of depth that's missing from CGI. So in that sense, it makes it better. But since Nolan uses live stunt work, there's little need for 3D.

  3D is just another tool, as IMAX or CGI. I think if 3D was used by the right hands and SERVING the story, i think could be great. A master storyteller can use whatever he wants, as long as it serves him well. But, as i said before, 3D is an in-development tool yet, IMO.
  I'm curious to see Scorsese's HUGO. I'm a big fan of Scorsese and i'm curious to see how he'll use 3D. And you know, he's not fucking Michael Bay! XD

    Scorcese isn't Michael Bay. However, he is a director who's been around a long time and has made a lot of movies. I would imagine when you reach the point he has in his career, you'd get bored making the same kinds of movies or making them the same way. 3D is the new toy in the filmmakers toy box. It's a great tool, but it does seem like people are using it just for the sake of using it.

  Nolan is very interested in technology when he makes his films. That's not even an argument. If he wasn't he would be just like any other blockbuster director and shoot on Super 35 and/or digital and process his images at the sorely overused 2k. Instead he's very specific about the lenses and is currently one of 2 remaining directors to cut the original negative to edit instead of editing digitally. This is because cutting the original negative allows him to get the highest image quality out of the film as opposed to watering it down with 2k. He may not be interested in "computer" technology but he's one of the most tech smart directors out there.

    He's interested in technology only insofar as it helps makes the kind of film he wants to make. For example, when it came to IMAX, I don't think he started out wanting to shoot in IMAX just for its own sake. Instead, he realized that shooting on location in Chicago and staging elaborate action set pieces lent itself to IMAX. Now compare that to James Cameron and Avatar. The story itself is a rehash of Dances With Wolves, The Last Samurai, and Pocahontas. So obviously it wasn't the story that compelled him to make Avatar. It had been nearly a decade since Titanic where he made a ton of money. So it begs the question as to what was big motivation. Well it seems to me that he really just wanted to play with new toys, 3D and motion capture. So he whipped up an unoriginal story to make use of those toys. What I admire about Nolan is that he doesn't start with a new technology and then come up with the movie to make use of that technology. Maybe someday he'll do a 3D movie. But I suspect it'll be because it suits the movie he wants to make, not the other way around.

3D movies are complete and uttermost garbage. it might be a big deal if your like 6, but a real movie really only needs is a rich story.

well lets get the facts straight here, chris nolans is not the biggist fan of 3d films and he doesnt really like using cgi in his films that why theres very little of it in his films, he has built hugh site pieces and hugh models in stead of cgi everything like michael bay and cgi whores james cameron and george lucas, in the dark knight aaron was whereing alot of make up with a few cgi dots on his face for later in post for his role of two-face.

Nolan's more into the quality of his movie,that's why he uses IMAX,but 3D itself is not a bad thing.It's simple: If you use your movie for 3D,the outcome will be garbage but if you use 3D for your movie,the outcome will be amazing.
