Last week it was reported that the first 6 minutes of The Dark Knight Rises would play before IMAX showings of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. AMC Theatres just reported some good news and some not-so-good news. The good news, the movie chain has confirmed that there will be a The Dark Knight Rises prologue shown in front of Mission Impossible. The bad news? The footage will only be shown on the higher resolution 70mm IMAX screens. Not the digital IMAX screens. Here's an excerpt from AMC's exclusive update:

AMC Theatres can confirm that this footage will be shown in front of Ghost Protocol on December 16th. (Ghost Protocol will release in IMAX five days before its general release on the 21st of December.)

However...

The six minute Dark Knight Rises prologue footage will only be shown on the higher resolution 70mm IMAX screens. Not the digital IMAX screens. Locations haven't been confirmed yet, so stay tuned for an update on AMC Theatre locations that will be showing the prologue Dark Knight Rises footage at a 70mm IMAX screen nearest you.

Stay tuned to Batman-News.com, I'll try to make it easy for you to find the closest 70mm IMAX screen. In the meantime, hopefully Warner Bros. will release a press release making this official news "officially official".

      On a side note, IMAX is a Canadian invention... Like if you love Canada!.. without us, TDKR would be in 3D (just kidding)

    70mm projection is sadly going extinct. I don't mind 2k or 4k digital projection but IMAX is best on 70mm projectors and sadly many more are converting. Someday I fear all 70's will be gone.

    BITTERSWEET indeed!!!.... this confirms december will be a month to remember with the Prologue and inevitable trailer.... this is gonna sound bad, but i doubt Warner Bros. will release a version online, so i hope someone bootlegs it.... srry,

      As far as I know they didn't release the prologue online for dark knight either.

    I live right next to 2 AMC IMAX theaters. If neither of these shows the prologue, I'm going to be super pissed...haha.

    They're gouging the bread and butter audience demographic. Maybe that is the point but if so then prepare for a Karate Kid crane kick to your Kobra Kai faces. Anyways, college kids and teenagers cannot afford the tickets to these theaters. Thus why people are turning away from the movies in droves. The ticket prices. The only kids whom can, foreign kids who pay half what they would in UK or Australia or Fiji or The Philippines, are probably being guided away from the working class friends that first introduced them to this stuff here as foreigners approx. 20 some odd years ago. If they did get in touch with ME then they'd SEE that the same acidhead sleazebags I told to fuck off, amongst others with hotter tempers, need their BANK ACCOUNTS now ransacked like a bedroom. If not them, their troublemaking friends saying that Brits and Americans are brothers like the next of kin to someone even the Columbians wouldn't tolerate touching the USA. Those are the fellas, kid you not, that know what's going on with this shit why it costs so much and still won't talk because they have a hard on that shit didn't go their way when they backed the WRONG HORSE! What am I talking about? The dot-com. Enron, Worldcom, etc. Whom said way, way back when BEFORE troops coming HOME from Iraq even LEFT that time was right to pull their fuckin' money out? They said no, no man its just becoming harder edge if you leave it in there. Uh yeah d-bag because people are busting your balls? And I'm still doing it. =))

    Looks like I'll be seein Ghost Protocol in NY cuz Jersey don't have any real IMAX screens just the digital ones which is unfortunate but this will definitely be worth the price of admission.

    Damn, we have just 1 IMAX theater here in Rio... and the price is ridiculous! But hell, will worth it! Then i'm sure that this prologue will leak on the internet anyway... my question is: would they release a regular trailer before or at the same period?

    Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh = ( The IMAX in my city is Digital ! I am seriously thinking of trying to avoid The Prologue and just wait to see The Opening fresh with the full movie ! I would love to see The Prologue in December but i carnt ( unless i travel to another city ) And i dont realy want to see a SH*TTY BOOTLEG , I will be so pissed with myself if a Bootleg leakes and i am weak and watch it ! That is NOT the way this movie should be viewed ! FU*CKING HELL , ITS NEVER EASY IS IT = ) LOL !

    So will the regular theater version be like a vertical pan and scan? I hope we aren't being cheated out of too much of the top and bottom of the frame. I totally missed Joker's Crocs last time. This is going to make buying the dvd/blu ray confusing as hell. Do we buy a wide screen copy? Tall screen? Full screen? What? Will full screen finally get to live up to its namesake?

    Seeing the following in a multiplex will be weird.
    This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit this screen.

      If you have a blu ray player buy the blu ray. If you get DVD get the widescreen. Never go with full screen.

        Well the I-Max aspect ratio would be closer to a full screen format. The TDK I-Max scenes were pretty close.

    This is GOOD news. the digital screens arent Imax they're LIEmax. Full quality is the only way I wanna see it anyway

    I'll be in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on this date.

    I know for a fact the city only has one IMAX theater, but I have the slightest clue as to whether it's a digital or 70mm theater.

    Hopefully it's the latter...

    Still good news for me because it is now confirmed! I can't see the prologue and I don't want to because I wanna be surprised as much as possible on July 20th,2012.What I do care about is the trailer which will definitely be shown with the prologue and will hit the Internet after it.And I hope when  Warner Bros. confirms this official news,they give us an official picture! I'm so excited!

    Hi everyone, LFexaminer is a GREAT website to find out all about IMAX and whats real and what isnt. They also have theatre maps and i've posted a link of a list of IMAX theatres (in the USA, sorry International territories). I'm just glad the TInsletown in Rochester is as true 70mm theatre. Prologue here I come!

      damnit, they downgraded that theatre to a digital format. thats the second theatre close to me to downgrade their IMAX because of cost in 3 years!

    How do I know that the IMAX theaters in my country are the REAL ones? Please Batman-News.com let me know! Make a list or something ;).

      You just go to that cinemas Web Site click on the IMAX link , they are obliged to tell you if it is IMAX R ( Real ) or IMAX Digital , look carefuly because they only put this info in small print ! Hope this helps = )

        Well that sucks, because it's digital. I live in Holland and we have three IMAX theaters. And they all belong to one big cinema called Pathé. So I can't see the prologue here :( But then again, definitely the big trailer with Sherlock Holmes 2, although I don't really want to see that movie in theaters, it's worth it just for TDKR's trailer eh :D
