LOVEFiLM caught up with Gary Oldman and of course The Dark Knight Rises was brought up. Oldman explained that there are still two months of filming left, they'll be wrapping up in November. He couldn't say much about The Dark Knight Rises, but did say that Christopher Nolan has come up with something "very special". Here's the full quote:

I can’t tell you anything about it, I’m sworn to secrecy! Yeah, it’s a terrific script, it’s a great story. There was obviously a bit of pressure on Chris to make another one, but he can call the shots now, and I don’t think he’d have made a third for the sake of it. He really wanted to complete what’s, I guess, the trilogy. And he’s come up with something very special.

I've been thinking to myself how Christopher Nolan could top The Dark Knight, but Oldman confirmed what I've assumed for a long time. Christopher Nolan wouldn't be back making The Dark Knight Rises if he didn't believe he could top the last one. How do you think Nolan will top The Dark Knight? Let me know in the comments.

    When Hardy or JGL speak i take that with a grain of salt , they are young actors caught up in the HYPE like the rest of us , when Oldman says stuff like this , i think i will listen because he has been around a long time and knows what he ie talking about !

      Hardy hasn't been around THAT long, but he has proven his chops... If you watch a bunch of his films and TV specials, he has proven to be a powerful force to be reckoned with--it's just that his talent has finally made an impression on the US through Nolan.

      And JGL may be young but he has also been in a bunch of different capacities of acting. I still need to watch more of his stuff, but he was great in Third Rock from the Sun, Brick, Inception, and (500) Days of Summer. Nolan tends to cast actors who are in it for the art, and not the money. JGL, Hardy, Bale, Ledger, Caine, Oldman, etc etc are all artists, so I trust all of his cast on whether the script is good or not.

         Well said. What I like most about the cast is that they are all dedicated, talented, passionate and creative people.  They are not your average run-of-the-mill action stars.  JGL, Hardy, Bale, Caine, Oldman, Freeman and Hathaway have all carried a film in a leading role. Truly heavyweights in the business.

    I'm not worried about him topping the Dark Knight. I just want a coherent story. When he does that (and I'm certain he will) I will be very happy.

    Me and you and all of us LOL! This will be the film to break the highest Opening day record to beat "Titanic", "Avatar" and "Harry Potter Deathly Hollows PT2" I'm already planning to see it on the midnight premiere at any cost! >:D

      LOL , Serious question to all Batman fans , its obvious Warner Bros would love to set up a DC Universe like MARVEL have , how would you feel if there was a Superman reference in TDKR ! remember it is not out of the question because Nolan is a producer on THE MAN OF STEEL ?

        Well, if the whole thing was well done, discreet, easter eggish, and not those "in your face" kind of stuff... hell, why not! But i strongly think that won't be the case in TDKR. The Man already said: "...no superpowers, aliens, etc, in my Nolanverse!" lol

        Well I would have loved the Gotham football to play versus Metropolis.

        After that, I think Warner could set up the DC univers after Batman 3 (since I think they will not reboot the series completely). You can be consistent with what Nolan has done. One thing would have to be that Batman started first, when there was no superhero. Then, in the continuity, you could have Man of Steel and potentially Green Lantern.

        Anyway, to be, as opposed to Marvel who needed to make a movie for each of the character and tie the movies together, I actually think Warner should start with a Batman/Superman movie, loosely related to the two respected franchises. And then, for the second movie, you expend to the full JLA.

        Please not, Nolan's movies should not be turned in 2 hour commercials for a teamup movie. In this world superman doesn't exist so why reference him?
        An easter-egg can be nice, but just dropping it "for the fans" takes away from the story more than it does any good

    I don't know what to think of it, but there are a bunch of people speculating that Batman will get broken. Not sure if I'm for it or not, since the movie seems very full already, but these are early days.

      I'm almost sure Batman will get fucked at some point of the movie... I can call it a consensus. I think it will happen in the begining to middle of the movie.

    One of the best parts about the dark knight was Nolan's ending. He left it so open philosophically! What I mean by that more specifically is that it almost seems that batman admits defeat. He said joker was right... He was able to turn the best of Gotham into anarchy (dent). By saying this, the film could be seen as backing nihilism as ultimate reality. The quote, "people need to be rewarded for their faith" essentially says that the good in people doesn't really exist. The joker convinced batman of his worldview... People are bad/there's no real good. So the way Nolan will top the dark knight is by reestablishing batmans faith in humanity. Batman, in the next movie, will have to come back to the same understanding and belief in Gotham that he had for the majority of tdk. Rises main objective should be this. Now how Nolan goes about doing this is what will make it awesome. Maybe batman is broken, and "when the chips are down" the people of Gotham (or at least a select few, ie. Catwoman, robin, whoever) step up and "rise" to the occasion selflessly and heroically, proving that people ARE good and joker wasn't right after all.
    Idk. Thoughts?

      WORD!... right now, it's impossible to imagine a powerful/epic ending that will end the trilogy (aka, last part of the movie leading up to the final frame).... the montage of clips was powerful/moving... and that last shot of the Batpod going into the light was too perfect!.... The Dark Knight isn't just the best superhero movie of all time, It's one of the BEST movies of all time... If this one doesn't get nominated for best picture, imma pull a Kanye West!

      Hey, great point! But i think that "good and bad people" issue in part became clear when none of the boats exploded in TDK.
      But yeah dude, good theory!

        But when "Gotham's white night" shot somebody in the head it got a little more unclear. Even though the boats didn't explode jokers point was proven right because he turned dent.
        The ending kind of left us with a "well I guess people ARE inherently evil..." feeling. The redeeming part of the movie ( in my opinion) is that we find batman act as a Christ-figure in the end. It might be controversial but it's hard to deny... Batman, for the greater good, sacrifices his image and takes the blame for injustice he did not commit. Hmm... Kinda like (well you know). Like I said earlier, rises must show batmans hope in Gotham redeemed. OR maybe not. Maybe that's the point... Humans AREN'T good. Which is why we need a batman to save us. Again, idk. Just guess work.

          I agree. But what makes TDKR even more anticipated and special, is all that mistery... i think the closure still very unclear, 'cause there is a plenty of ways for Batman's redemption, you know? Nolan likes to left some loose changes on his movies. Well, would he might deliver us a depressing, negative closure? Nobody knows...

      Sounds good! I think the idea of Batman finding faith in people would be a good theme.
      But I think more importantly it will be about people finding  faith in Batman.
      I see it this way:
      Batman Begins: People don't really know who Batman is. They hear rumors of a man bat flying around Gotham and that's about it.
      The Dark Knight: People are well aware of the Batman as evidenced by the copy cats. They know he stops crime. But He really is just a vigilante. When the chips are down, they want to hand him in because they don't want anymore people to die because of him.
      The Dark Knight Rises: Batman is thought to have killed those people. They send the dogs on him. But somehow Batman publicly saves Gotham from Bane and regains their respect. Batman becomes an icon to Gotham much like how we see him.

      I think that's what TDKR will be about. Batman becoming not a silent protector, not watchful guardian, but a hero Gotham deserves and needs.

    You do realize there is only one way to top The Dark Knight AND prevent overconfident chump directors from continuing (and destroying) the series--Batman's gonna die.

        Yup. as it stands it really is 50/50 on whether Batman lives or dies.... People are using the title "The Dark Knight Rises" to back up their point about him living on, but the other side of the coin is, him rising to the occasion of Gotham in chaos, and dying a hero.... After all, he did say, "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain".... Either way, at the end of the day Nolan WILL do the right thing...

      Would be beautiful, but i don't think so... as a WB's huge-mega franchise, i strongly believe that is easier for them to cementing a foundation for a new reboot. Even if Batman dies, they'll make another one anyway, so what's the point?

        All I know is I trust Nolan, and I don't really want to speculate on what'll happen in the movie. I'm sure Nolan will do justice to this film. But I honestly want to see the three Robins in a darker film, instead of the candy ones by Schumacher. So if they want to fuck up the movies after Nolan, it's fine with me. Even put in the JLA. As long as Nolan's not involved. I mean, it may turn out good, just not as good as Nolan's films.

        I'm a huge batman freak and absolutely have the utmost respect for Chris Nolan and his ability to put a story together and deliver with such preciseness. 

        Regarding the comments about Batman possibly dying, i honestly have to say i wouldn't be surprised if this were to happen.  I'm sure all have seen the teaser trailer of TDKR and if you recall that last frame shot, Batman looked tired, over exhausted, and i'd go as far as to say "defeated" when Bane was walking towards him and he was backing up.  He's definitely met his match in TDKR with Bane.  I can't wait!!!!  I've gon to see Batman Begins and TDK all at the midnight showings.  This will be no different.

    There's one way this movie is going to top the second one (if it does), Nolan likes to give the sort of endings that leaves you with a question you get to, in a way, "choose" the answer. If you ask me, batman will end his work for good, but he will leave us the doubt if he died or not.

    IMPORTANT! Remember Christian Bale's interview with screenrush?! Guys,he said Bruce is gonna learn how to live like other people,but embarrassingly late in life.This,at least,shows that Batman will not die.Now,only two possibilities left:Batman quits and lives a normal life OR he comes to accept his dual identity and establishes a whole new life.
    I personally prefer the second theory.Do you remember how much he wanted to quit and let Dent be the hero in The Dark Knight?I never liked that.Why would he be so reluctant to continue his Batman career while he has just started it?In my opinion,Nolan wanted to show that Bruce hadn't learned how to be both Batman and Bruce Wayne and that he thought Gotham didn't need him.So,Nolan is back with a great story that will help Bruce how to live and the way in which the story will develop that idea is gonna be the thing that will make The Dark Knight Rises top The Dark Knight(plus other improvements and action scenes,of course!)
    Bruce eventually comes to accept his dual identity as heir to the Wayne family estate and the Batman.

    personally i like batman begins better than tdk. it also had a superior soundtrack than tdk. but dont get me wrong. tdk was really good And on my favorite movies list

      Exactly,and you know what?! The Dark Knight Rises certainly has a great story,great acting(we'll see),and great directing.All that is left is an epic soundtrack.Let's hope Mr.Zimmer has a plan up his sleeve just like Nolan.

    Everybody seems to be talking about Batman dying to wrap the trilogy. I really have to disagree with you. I believe that Batman IS going to take a big-time ass-whuppin' from Bane, and WILL get his back broken... but I believe the movie will end with Batman kicking Bane's ass to give us all the happy ending that TDK did NOT have. Perhaps Bruce Wayne will re-establish his faith in people through his romance with Selina Kyle/Miranda Tate or something like that... In my opinion Nolan will end the series on an optimistic note with Batman looking at Gotham from a skyscarper or The Bat-Signal looming in the sky. Thay would be EPIC!

    Question : If Bane & the "League of Shadows" take Gotham's control, and if they release all the prisoners of Arkham prison as wee can see on the photos, what about the Joker ????... Where will he be at this moment ? Just wathching TV and laughing about all of it ? I think we'll need a little explanation about what he becomes after the Dark knight, don't you think ??

      i doubt we'll see him on screen (and if we do, it'll be just his back or a brief camoe using unused footage0 since Nolan wont recast the role. Having said this, some mention (in a brief dialogue maybe0 of what becomes of him would be very nice.v

      I'd like to see a mention that Joker got broke out by a "female clown" with Gordon telling Batman they have to start all over again, but Batman says they'll do it again.

    I think Batman will be broken at the end (even though Catwoman may beat Bane herself). The so -called epic-ending I make up is a wheel-chaired Bruce Wayne, back to the camera, in front of a rainy window, reviewing ALL his life and career. And, at the end, just remembering the mental training from Tibet, he achieves to focus on bending his own weakness and remembers his father's motto: "Why do we fall...?". And then, he unexpectedly gets up in an unexplainable way, against the rainy window, enlightened by a thunder... THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (that'd be NOLAN).

    I have had this little theory for a while. Question: why is the movie called "the dark knight rises" and not "batman rises" or "(some synonim for batman) rises?" I men, why repeat the "dark knight" phrase? I think in Nolan's mind "batman" and "the dark knight" are different characters... Batman was Bruce's original concept, the "symbol of hope" for the pple of gotham. The Dark Knight is a persona created to "reward people's faith", and to be "whatever it tajkes"... So, even though it was "Batman" that "begins" it is ultimately "the dark knight" who "rises", because it is not hope what people need, but "tangible results", and this is what the Dark Knight offers: someone to hate when you need to hate, someone to make you feel safe when you need to feel safe, someone to the X when you need X.

    this is what happens: Batman defeats Bane but not without beingseriously hurt. At the end gotham realize that the direction of the city is in the hands of its citizens and not in the hands of a vigilante.Alfred tells Bruce: your job is done mr. wayne, you've taught people of gotham what you wanted 
    Bruce responds: I did not, alfred. Batman was a symbol. The symbol of hope. The hope that comes from fear. I wanted to convey a message of hope through the ways of fear. 

    Alfred: and you did so, mr. wayne
    Bruce: no, alfred, i was wrong. it was the people of gotham who taught me
    Alfred: and what you learned, mr wayne?
    Bruce: i learned, that there’s always something new to fear, and that I can’t do nothing about it. I lost my parents. I lost Rachel. I almost lost you, Alfred. cuz life is losing and losing.

    last frame: gotham by night, some time in the future, two thieves robbing a store, they have guns and take hostages,
     suddenly a gray shadows appears,you can't see who is him, he start to beat the thieves, 

    on of the thieves ask, with fear in her eyes: who are you???
    an imposing voice, but certainly not the voice of Bruce responds: I'm Batman!

    Nolan is a filmmaker. I have to say I disagree that his plan is to beat The Dark Knight. After reading lots of interviews and reading lots of posts on this site (Best. Site. Ever.), I think the only reason Nolan is making this film is because he has a good story and he wants to make it--for himself. 

    When you're in the business of creating things for yourself, you put your entire life into it. To me that seems to be how Nolan makes films--he loves telling a story. He just happens to be damn well good at it too. 

    Nolan has passion for filmmaking, and that's why I think this movie will be Fantastic.

    And come on-- JGL and Hardy may be "young" compared to Oldman and Caine, but I personally believe they know what they're talking about. We don't know what its like to film a movie, they do. And both have had experience with Nolan, and that's the part that counts. 

    I believe in Chris Nolan.

    There will be an CGI Bane at the End and bevore he dies he brake batman into pieces so he cant be batman anymore

    Best ending they can make for a trilogy without the chance for joel schumacher to make an beatuiful my little pony batman version out of it :)

    That'd be cool if at the End of "Rises" Bruce and Lucius Fox (if they're still alive) go to a carnival one night they sit down, they announce Dick Grayson and he starts doing whatever he's doing and Bruce looks at the camera as it zooms toward him and smiles thus breaking the fourth wall (if your smart you know what that means or you'll astleast google it) and indicating a possibility for a fourth film!

      I don't like  breaking the fourth wall. Reminds me of Donner's Superman, which I loved, but seems like a very different style. And I'd much rather Bruce goes to the circus/carnival with a woman date (ater all, Selina is in this movie). Other than that, it could work to introduce Dick without introducing Robin. Actually, if memory is not failing, the viral campaign for TDK has a newspaper clipping that announced "the flying graysons" were coming to gotham.

      Chris Nolan has stated many times before that Robin will never appear in any of his Batman movies. Robin is great for the comics, however I don't think he makes a great transition to film. Think about it. The only other Batman movies in the vicinity of Batman Begins, and TDK is Tim Burton's Batman, and Batman Returns, and those did not feature Robin. Nolan's take on Batman has been awesome no questions asked but Burtons was great to, and was actually on the darker side like Nolan if most of you remember. Now Joel Schumacher's take on Batman did feature Robin, and well I think we all know how both Batman Forever, and Batman and Robin turned out....Pretty Cheesy. Though I will say it wasn't Robin's complete doing of those movies demise, but he did play a big role.
