Marion Cotillard comments on 'The Dark Knight Rises' role, says she's not from the comics

Josh Horowitz caught up with Marion Cotillard last night at the premiere of her new movie Contagion. Cotillard has been cast as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member, but fans have speculated that may just be a cover for her true identity. Horowitz asked if Cotillard is basing her The Dark Knight Rises role off of the comics, and here's what she had to say:

Well, actually, it was not based off of a character in the comic," she told us when we asked if she took cues for her character from the Batman comics. When we asked if she was telling us the truth, she answered with a smile: "Yes, I am."
And if we talk to her in a year from now, will we be able to say she was lying to us? "No," she said emphatically. "No!"

She's only telling the truth insomuch as her credited role of "Miranda Tate" isn't a character from the comics. Bet if the interviewer had qualified it with the name "Talia Al Ghul" she would have responded "no comment".

You got a point.Also,if she's not Talia,how does she justify the pics that we've seen of her.The robe she was wearing...the thugs that were escorting her...especially the robe I mean...Who else could she be?God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!When will they stop playing with us?!

One interesting thing to notice is that on imdb there is a young girl cast as "young Talia Al Ghul"

  IMDB isn't accurate. None of what's posted is confirmed. It's like Wikipedia. Anyone can edit it.

    Imdb is right.
    Joey King is the young Talia.
    She was spotted in India by some people including the same indian guy who took the pic of Josh Pence on the set.
    Makes no sense cast a young actress who looks like Marion to play the young Talia if Marion is not Talia.

I believe her. But I also believe there is a much deeper and possibly sinister aspect to her character, maybe even related to the league of shadows. I really believe she is a "Talia-like" character, maybe a stand-in or maybe even Talia with a small rewrite so she isn't part of the al Ghul family. I really believe that Ms. Tate is heavily based on the comic character of Talia al Ghul, but for whatever reason, Nolan needed aspects of Talia in his story but couldn't fit in the part where she is Ras' daughter so they renamed her Miranda Tate. That is my theory

With the secrecy of movies like this, a lot of times the actors don't get full scripts. They leave out the scenes with the "twists" so nothing leaks. A lot of times they don't get them until right before shooting them. With Nolan's desire to keep the secrets as secret as possible I don't think it's a stretch to think he'd do that. If she's really Talia, she might not even know it yet.

LOL!!!! All those who yelled on the boards, "It's Talia 100%" just took a huge hit!!! LOVE IT!... I honestly couldn't care less who she is playing. and i hate it when people just assume things like that... I think she is telling the truth, and yes, her character may be inspired by Talia.... Like I said and many are saying... Nolan will keep us guessing! He'll never go the obvious route. and will always find ways to surprise us, no matter how well we think we know the movie.... HA!

Such a beautiful and talented actress, I love it how coy she was with him. Whether or not her character is who we think it all is she obviously isn't going to tell us straight foward, but it's funny to see her have fun with it as she should.

What are the chances that Nolan is messing with the fans? Everyone will go in expecting Miranda to be Talia, but maybe it'll be someone else. Imagine if Selina Kyle turned out to be the real Talia. I don't expect that, but it sure would surprise the fans.

I think that would enrage (is that a word in english?) rather than surprise the fans. Nolan likes twists but he also is very respectful of the back stories. For instance, the Gul/Ducard twist surprised everyone, but it made sense: Ducard was indeed the guy who trained Batman (at least for a time), AND he was also a ver 'grey' character, much like Ras.

Big Nose, Nolan messed with fans once: when he told us that the batpod wouldn't pop up from the tumbler and he said that it[pod] wouldn't even appear in TDK. lol
Ok, Marion doesn't know who the hell is Talia, and the majority of the audience neither! So, maybe she's even doesn't know the full plot. So, yeah... c'mon, she's Talia!

She is obviously lying, which is fine; that's what she is supposed to do. I just can't wait until next summer. I wonder, though, what the circumstances were surrounding her and her mothers kidnapping. Ras tells of his family being taken from him in Begins. Will we see this? Is a young Bane somehow involved? Is Bane actually Ras' son, Talia's brother? Would Nolan do this? I'd like to see a strange brother/sister villain pare. Anybody else?

What if Martha Wayne was at first Ra's' wife.Then "she was taken from him" by Thomas Wayne after she realized Ra's had extreme ideas.In Batman Begins,Bruce asked Ra's:What stopped that?Ra's replied, "Vengeance."(By killing Thomas and Martha Wayne,Ra's also had his revenge)Thus,Talia is Bruce's stepsister who wants to avenge her father's death.Maybe this is one of the things that connects TDKR with BB and one of the things Bruce will learn about his life!That's not exactly my idea! I read it somewhere.This is so funny,isn't it?

As for Cotillard, I agree that she looks great. Nice to see an actress who looks like a woman, not an anorexic like we so often these days. And I'm glad Cotillard silenced all the fanboys who were worried she wouldn't be able to get in shape so soon after giving birth. The sad thing is that she's probably in better shape than a lot of them. And for her to sign for a film so soon after having a baby must mean the role is pretty good.

She is totally lying when she says its not based on the comic book. Look at how she keeps staring at the reporter when he asks this but, when the subject moves away from her character, her gaze starts to wander. I think that when the character talk was going on Marion was afraid she'd mess up, and then she relaxed... question is, if her character is Miranda Tate and not someone else, what does hse have to hide?
