Joseph Gordon-Levitt is John Blake, Marion Cotillard is Miranda Tate in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

April 19, 2011

After months of speculation we finally have confirmation on Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Marion Cotillard. Warner Bros. just issued a press release confirming that Joseph Gordon will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon. Marion Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.

Check out the full press release:

BURBANK, CA, April 19, 2011 - Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have joined the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend.
Cotillard will appear as Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.
Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon.
The film reunites the actors with Christopher Nolan, who recently directed them in the award-winning blockbuster “Inception.”
The director stated, “When you collaborate with people as talented as Marion and Joe, it comes as no surprise that you would want to repeat the experience. I immediately thought of them for the roles of Miranda and Blake, and I am looking forward to working with both of them again.”
Heading the cast of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne/Batman. The main cast also includes Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle and Tom Hardy as Bane.
Nolan will direct the film from a screenplay he wrote with Jonathan Nolan, from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer. Christopher Nolan will also produce the film with his longtime producing partner, Emma Thomas, and Charles Roven.
“The Dark Knight Rises” is slated for release on July 20, 2012. The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Remember the old leak that was something like: "two female leads, one villain, one love interest"? If Cotillard is playing Miranda Tate as opposed to Talia, then the villain is Hathaway's Catwoman and Talia's not in it. She's already been done as (something) of a love interest in Batman Returns so why do it again?

Okay, I´ve read everybody comments, so I going to add my own...
Well, I always in favour of Talia to be in the movie so I´m really happy she effectively is. Miranda Tate in no one, a simply decoy; I was expecting that she would not reveal herself until the climax of the plot and it seems to go that way. I can already see Bruce´s face when she reveals to him, it will be diferent from Begins because Bruce will be in love with Talia I believe so it will make it hard to take although Nolan can go with Bruce uncovering Talia´s disguise, that would work too...
About Joseph Gordon Levitt... It´s hard to imagine him on the Anti Batman Task Force because of his physique but it is stated that he is indeed a beat cop, who must be of extremely confidence to Gordon so I see this Task Force with 4/5 guys, Bane included. Yes at this point I´m going with Bane being a cop, either by trade or infiltrated by TLOS. Also I don´t rule out the potencial for JGL to be more than it seems...

I'm pretty sure there isn't going to be more than one Al Ghul in DKR. Bane was said to have been injected by a doctor who bared resemblance to Hugo Strange correct? Maybe the flashback scene involves Ras Al Ghul secretly conferencing with Hugo Strange about the creation of the super soldier for The League Of Shadows and NOT the military? Thats going to be my guess. Strange leads special forces to hunt down Batman so that Bane can fulfill his life legacy of fulifilling the Leagues dreams. Also maybe Bane will break Hugo's back by mistake? I could be right or i could be completely wrong with my observation but either way im certain that DKR will whoop TDK and Inception.

Can't understand sudden rage from Gott and Guanoman. Talia could be in the movie or could not be. As long as it's a good movie, I don't care. We are just making guess here, not supporting a "Talia team" or whatever.

Didn't Rahs say that his wife and child were taken from him? Talia has some big daddy issues in the comics (as far as I know) she might just be the opposite of what you guys think of her, maybe she will be helping Bruce to take on catwoman and bane...
my point is, all these speculations are really just speculations, though they are fun to read and think about it doesn't really matter what we all think because we are all wrong anyway

Miranda Tate being Talia Al Ghul is waaayyyy too expected and thats not a Nolan thing. I'm going to be an underdog on this one and say that Nolan has yall fooled. Im hoping its Hugo and him and Bane being the last of the League Of Shadows. Also as fucked up as it sounds i really hope Bane breaks Batmans back. Or at least break someones back!

Funny, I don´t feel fooled at all...
Maybe it´s because I know better. And it seems hilarious to see that some now call the Talia option an expected one! The Riddler would be an expected choice, 80% of the audience will have no clue who the hell is Talia.

I think its dumb to think c.nolan will do the same thing he did on batman begins with ducard as ghul nd tate as talia. Think about it. The story has changed so what if both catwoman and tate are his daughters. Since the league knows of both bruce and batman they'll use that and have bane as a 3rd distraction. As for JGL, he'll help batman and become batman beyond! C.Bale said in an interview "batman doesn't need robin." Uh oh?

I didn't see that coming... well, I once could imagined JGL playing a good guy in this flick, but all indicates he would be Falcone. But, ok... alright! Miranda Tate = love interest. Blake maybe a representation of Max Cort? Well, surely Nolan will bring us an U-turn for him!

I kind of hope JGL is somewhat of a torn character. Perhaps he trusts Gordon with whatever he is doing, but maybe still has his reserves as to why he is doing what he is doing, I think thats the good thing with Nolan's characters, its not just what and who the characters are, but more importantly why the do what they do.

Is Miranda Tate actually a character in the Batman/comic universe? Is John Blake? Or are these characters just Nolan's creation for the movie?
Just curious?

So, the Prestige was "Batman and Alfred try their hand at magic tricks"? It's called acting, pretending to be someone you're not, and its their job.

Have to admit, the thought has crossed my mind that JGL could be Robin under the radar, so I tend to agree with Bjc, dont discount the idea. Not to mention Dick Grayson did moonlight as a daytime cop in Bludhaven storylines. Could potentially offer up an original origin perspective on an iconic (albeit mocked) character in Batman canon - a cop hellbent on bringing down the bat comes to align with his ideals to become 'Robin' (or Nightwing).

I smell a "my name is Doucard, but I speak for Ras Al Ghul" scenario in the works with Cotillard. With JGL I'm not sure what to think just yet. It may be a Reese type of role, or it could have a twist like he works for the LOS or something. We'll see.

  Great news!
I still really don't see Bane as a possible member of the cop team chasing Batman. It would be simply too much for a single "faction" involved in the movie, especially now that JGL is clearly part of it.
I still hope for the classic origin for Bane. How such a guy could be a cop, even as a cover, I highly doubt it. Bane should be the perfect fighter and tactician, maybe plotting with other, but acting solo when time comes to prove he can best The Batman.
Concerning JGL, two possibilites of course : cop turning very pro Batman or Cop turning very anti Batman. So Robin-like or Max Cort-like.
I still think Marion Cotillard will be Talia. As Oldman said, it all about a story arc. A father/son/daughter story. A death avenged.
Catwoman will have to help Batman for sure when he will be facing such odds.
Or I'm totally wrong on the whole line :)

Finally some good news. Not another "bad guy".
Everything was feeling a little cluttered for a while with the rumours that either Marian or Joe were going to play possible high profile villains.
All those who were convinced there were more villains being cast and spreading false rumours know where they can shove them, Ha!

so is it likely (I say "likely", not "definitely"!) that JGL will one of the few "good guys", maybe one of the few honest cops alongside Gordon. Or he could be a rotten cop on Bane's payroll, haha. That's a far cry from Falcones, Marones, Black Masks etc.

Even if Miranda Tate turns out NOT to be Talia, there's still the potential for her to emerge as the villain. Being on the board at Wayne Enterprises puts her in a perfect position to affect Bruce. Let's assume she's actually an enemy of Lucius Fox and is trying to wrestle control of the company from him. Well then it might make sense for her to get close to Bruce. Also, it's entirely plausible that someone else on the board knows who Batman is. It's not like Reese was the only who could go digging into company records. I think it would be interesting if Tate wasn't Talia. Then the viewers expecting the big reveal might be surprised when it doesn't happen. Of course, some viewers might feel cheated to have that kind of buildup. And it still wouldn't address why a young Ra's appears in flashbacks. I'm really curious to see how Nolan integrates them. The moment we see a character having a flashback to Ra's, we'll know who they really are. If it's Tate, then we'll know she's Talia. If it's Bane, then we'll know that Ra's is his father. Hard to do a flashback when you never show who's having it.

It could just be Miranda Tate is Talia but ISNT Talia. As in she's a love interest who just turns out to be a cover up working for Bane, the League, whoever etc. She just might not use the al Ghul name or same concepts but still be a deciever. I'm in hopes Catwoman's the love interest but who knows. Answers are sure to come.
