3 on Nightwing #84 reviewNightwing #84 is a skippable, yet breezy enough read for long time fans. Tom Taylor’s script doesn’t spend much time addressing dangling plot threads from the main narrative, and instead dives head first into Fear State and the newfound dangers that come along with it. Robbi Rodriguez’s art is a fine enough fill-in, though the…
Okay. I know what you're thinking. I was thinking it too. A Titans synergy comic? Who the hell asked for this? That'd be like asking for a Superman comic written by the guy who wrote like, Holy Terror or something. Me. I did. I've wanted to cover a Titans book for ages now. Regardless, you can relax.…
Nightwing #82 makes good on the promise of its cover, spending most of the issue in a flashback showing exactly how Melinda Zucco is Dick Grayson’s sister. While there will be some readers who are immediately put off by this revelation, what’s on the page here is a well told story that remains true to…
Scooby and the gang are back, and they're facing their greatest threat yet- Black Mask! They'll need some help on this one, and who better than Nightwing and Batgirl? That's right sports fans, Nightwing is here!! In a Scooby-Doo comic!! I literally could not be happier. Now, before I spend my entire article gushing about…
Nightwing #81 will likely be remembered for its final page, but before we get to that, I’m glad to report that many of my misgivings on Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo’s run so far are largely gone. Up until now, the series has been cute, if not a bit slight, and aesthetically pleasing. What’s been…
Nightwing #80 is the strongest issue so far in this run since it actually has some form of forward momentum. I haven’t been in love with the series as most so far, but I had a feeling my patience would be rewarded and this month’s issue largely satisfies. Tom Taylor’s script turns the screws in…
I hope you're sitting, because... it's here. We're finally getting a highly detailed, premium quality statue of Batman and Robin. Yes, Batman AND Robin. No, it's not Carrie Kelly. It's really Batman and Dick Grayson together again, and it's amazing! In fact, I briefly considered titling this review "It's about damn time." Review Based on…
Nightwing #78 has a clear goal in mind. Tom Taylor sets up a compelling status quo that effectively leaves the “Ric Saga” in the past and even downplays some recent events such as “Joker War”. There’s a lot of maneuvering in the script that’s largely hidden by Taylor’s adept ability to imbue heart into the…
Batman/Catwoman #3 refines some themes Tom King set up in previous issues while slightly advancing the core narrative across the three time periods established so far. There’s no surprises in this issue, but the tense atmosphere remains palpable despite a narrative that amounts to spinning plates and waiting for one to finally crash. In previous…
So, I’m starting to suspect that people think I don’t like Dark Nights: Death Metal. Honestly, I’m not sure what gave it away. Do you think it was the consistent 5/10’s I gave to books others have considered to be the best parts of the series (Speed Metal, The Secret Origin)? Could it have been…
Dick Grayson has had a rich and colourful history throughout his tenure in the DC Universe: beginning from being the very first Robin to the Caped Crusader, Nightwing eventually took a persona of his own, stepping into his own world outside of the Batman's shadow. Now, fresh off the heels of the "Ric Grayson" storyline,…
…Argh. I’m going to try making this quick, because I don’t want to linger on this for too long. For the past several issues of Justice League, I’ve been having a great time reviewing the title. From The Garden of Mercy to Doom Metal, the comic has recently pivoted away from high-octane action, focusing more…
This book is a weird one to review. Recently, I’ve been very pleasantly surprised at the consistent level of quality we’re seeing from Justice League – especially when it’s serving the role of a tie-in to a larger event that I don’t have many positive feelings for. Joshua Williamson, Xermanico and Robson Rocha are telling…
Dear Lord, have I been stuck in a time loop for a year? When I began my review gig at Batman News, I had no ongoing books I was assigned to review. All I had were miniseries: Batman vs Ra’s al Ghul, Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy, Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity, and Tales from the Dark…
Who, in your opinion, are the best adversaries in all of fiction? The dynamic of the arch-enemy is one that has persisted for many a decade, and it’s created a sea of wonderful content. The creative potential of two individuals at diametrically opposed ends of morality… well, it’s a well that you can seemingly draw…
In 1902, British author W. W. Jacobs published a collection of short stories entitled The Lady of the Barge: twelve different tales that predominantly focused on the horror genre. In this collection lay a tale called The Monkey’s Paw: an iconic supernatural story about a family who gain the mummified hand of a monkey, which…
The recent DC solicitations for December announced that Dan Jurgens’ Batman Beyond will end with issue #50. With that knowledge in hand, Batman Beyond #47 feels a little out of the series’ normal wheelhouse. Our heroes are far away from Neo-Gotham and find themselves in space trying to take out a dangerous space station run…
It’s safe to say Dan Jurgens’ Batman Beyond is back on track. Any hint of Terry’s amnesia is long gone, Elainna is fully situated as Batwoman, and the book has regained an ensemble cast which Jurgens thrives with in the Beyond universe. Batman Beyond #46 keeps that momentum going with excellent character dynamics, fantastic art,…
After two months of basically non-stop action, Batman Beyond #45 smartly slows things down a bit and takes its time to properly set up the arc’s stakes and character motivations. While the last two issues were entertaining, Dan Jurgens’ script and character dynamics take a noticeable bump up in clarity and engagement. Also different is…
