DC Future State
·
3 on Future State: Gotham #3 ReviewAfter a promising second issue, Future State: Gotham returns for its third foray into the dark future of, well, Gotham. Previously, Peacekeeper Red and the Next Batman had been caught in the middle of a mass breakout at Blackgate Penitentiary. Will this unlikely duo survive the night, or do the inmates of Blackgate have more…
Before we start anything, I want to clarify and apologize for some things in my review of this series' last issue. In said review, I realize now that I made it seem like this book having black and white art negatively impacted my score of the issue. I'm sorry for that. It's not true, and,…
Catwoman #31 brings the series back to a heist oriented storyline, but Ram V’s script delivers these familiar goods in a stylish package. Fernando Blanco is allowed to stretch his comedic muscles more than usual, whether it be through taking jabs at high society or the sly glances Selina exchanges with her allies right before…
I’ve been known to piss my friends off from time to time by the way that I tell them about myself. It’s not intentional, mind you! I don’t make a point to gather people around a campfire, wistfully boasting of my accomplishments as if I didn’t peak in high school five years ago. The problem…
At this point, everyone and their mother has a different opinion on Future State – and while I still ultimately like the change of pace, I can’t deny the validity to a lot of people’s complaints. There are a few standouts throughout each time period the event is trying to portray, but the way they…
Spoiler alert: I thought this comic was alright! Normally I tend to give my final thoughts at the end of the issue, but I think it’s important to preface this review with my ultimate opinion. In my review for The Next Batman #1, I praised the comic for its wonderful artwork, smattered across a selection…
Thanks to my job, I don’t really have the need to buy physical DC comics anymore. Week to week, everyone at Batman News is given access to the latest the company has to offer, which is an insane privilege which I feel grateful for every time I boot up my computer. It gives me the…
I’ve been making my way through all of the new Future State stories and while many have been enjoyable, most are marred by a surplus of exposition as they attempt to establish the world they take place in. Thankfully, Future State: Nightwing #1 features one of the better balances between character and world building even…
Future State: Catwoman #1 is one of the best books to come out of DC’s latest initiative. Ram V’s script is perfectly paced and engaging. The world building is more nuanced than most other Future State books and Otto Schmidt’s art delivers the goods when it comes to both spectacle and delicate character moments. Even…
I’m trying to get a good read on the Future State event so far, and I have to say, I’m a little stumped. I’ve actually had debates with my coworkers about the nature of this event: while I’ve been honestly rather stoked at the chance to see characters doing something different within the DC Universe,…
Disclaimer With the year of 2020 coming to a close and 2021’s new horizons fresh before us, I think that all of us were hoping for some respite from the chaos of the last twelve months – but recent events have served to remind us that things don’t get magically better overnight, even with the…
One of the fun things about comic book speculation is bouncing theories and ideas off of friends and fellow fans, with some hopefully good-natured debate thrown into the mix. That’s what’s been so exciting about the upcoming Future State event at DC, particularly where Batman is involved. The Next Batman, to be specific. I mean,…
Coming fresh of the heels of Dark Nights: Death Metal, DC Comics is beginning 2021 with a line-wide event, stretching from January through February: DC Future State. Future State - presumably replacing DC's original 5G plans - will place the characters of the DC Universe into "futures both near and far", with a wide variety of new…
