      I had zero expectations going into that movie and came out with a big smile and was pleasantly surprised at how entertaining it was. The exact opposite effect of JL. I’ll be watching the sequel for sure regardless of what the “critics” say, the audience score on the movie though is very high and I can see why.

Batman Begins made over 374M on a 150M budget not including DVDs and merchandise so they did much better than “barely” making their money back lol.

Whenever I see people say that DC's comics are devoid of humor and lighthearted moments, it immediately tells me they've never actually read a DC comic.
Just like most other publishers, their output covers a vast swath of tones and moods. Even the DCAU, a landmark in taking children's animation seriously and with a more mature tone, had plenty of humor and levity.

Even though Aquaman does have serious and dark stories? Most DC characters have dark stories. Even in ZaQueerdo's DCAU gif, Aquaman in that cartoon was a serious mofo. He never joked around. What people's complaints are that Marvel overuses their jokes. Yes the comics are lighthearted at times, but when they are constantly making jokes even during life and death situations, it kills the tension and basically tells audiences that they don't have to take anything seriously. That's the main issue that people have towards jokes, and even some Marvel fans have echoed those complaints.

But regardless of whatever, the fact remains that one of the loudest complaints about BvS among the critics at the very least was that it was too dark and humorless. Regardless of what you believe, that they complained about that is true. And I agree, it’s very hypocritical and ridiculous of them, considering how dark movies they loved like TDK were, but still that didn’t stop them. That’s part of why critics suck.

      These are all of the best sources we have for gathering that information, and they are generally reflective of reality. Plus I also included sources like CinemaScore, which, unlike the hugely popular and widely known IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes sites that are used by many thousands of people, actually has controlled surveys at specific theaters done on opening night. All of the information on all of these sites agrees that most who saw it seemed to like it. Not sure why that’s shocking to you, seeing as it is a fact of life that most people tend to like most things. You really find it a surprise that the same general audience that adores movies like Transformers and Suicide Squad could like BvS? I mean, there’s next to no standards for them, so it’s not like their liking BvS means it’s a masterpiece or anything. It’s just a fact, and I’m tired of people denying it.
      And RT has addressed those bogus claims of fanboys rigging the scores already. It doesn’t happen. So you better quit relying on that to suit your narrative.

      Audiences scores on websites are not valid metrics. Rating a movie on RT, IMDb, wherever, means you (1) have already created an account, backed by an email address, and (2) clicked over to that movie's page in order to rate it. That's self-selection. A valid metric doesn't require effort and intention.
      As for opening weekend numbers...come on. I know you're smarter than this.

      It can't be said enough: 69% second weekend drop, against no competition. That doesn't happen to "well-liked" movies.
      You're going to blame the critics, of course. If a movie is well-liked, bad reviews won't matter. The Greatest Showman was panned (36% RT top critics) and it didn't matter to audiences. It opened with about $9M and went up 76 percent to $15M in its second weekend. It didn't decrease from $9 million until its sixth weekend.
      Its final gross was almost 20x its opening. BvS didn't reach 2x. Now, which one did audiences like, critics be damned?

    You're making the mistake of assuming that the tone was the deciding factor when the majority of the reviews that bring up the tone aren't the only criticisms mentioned.
    It's the narrative the hardcore fans keep pushing that BVS was a masterpiece and the only reason so many people disliked it was it being too dark, which is disingenuous at best.

      I don’t know if you actually understand what majority is. Because 6.5 on IMDB is not majority, and 66% is not majority in the sense of what you think. Now even JL got higher ratings than bvs from the general audience, it got 74% on RT, and 6.5 on IMDb. Just admit it, there is a small group that loved it, there is nothing wrong with that.

      If you want to know how the GA liked BvS, just take a look at the links I posted. They all agree. IMDB, RT, Metacritic, and the controlled survey of CinemaScore all indicate that more people liked the movie that saw it than didn’t.
      Not sure why this is a controversial fact to state, when it’s commonly known that when it comes to ANY movie, most people tend to like most movies. They’re not picky. How could you be so surprised that the same audience that adores movies like Tranformers and Suicide Squad would like BvS? Lol, the delusion is strong if that’s a shock to you.
      As for JL, yeah, it absolutely is more liked by the general audience than BvS is by those numbers. I never claimed otherwise. In fact, that’s what I WOULD EXPECT. It was a fun movie with good humor - that’s the kind of stuff the GA eats up. There was never a doubt in my mind they would like it more. In fact, that’s why I to this day am shocked that it didn’t do better in the box office than it did. What’s your point? That doesn’t change the fact that most liked BvS, too. Though I’m not sure as many people saw JL and BvS, so that could be argued to give more weight to the BvS scores than JL’s, but whatever.
      I don’t know how many people “loved” it. That’s not something I’m claiming to know. All I know is the fact that, as I said very clearly before, most of the general audience that saw it liked BvS. That’s all I’m saying. Nothing more. It doesn’t mean it was a masterpiece. Heck, it doesn’t even mean it was good. But that’s the simple fact of the matter, so that’s all I’m saying; I’m just tired of people making their own truth.     You seem to be under the impression that BvS was mainly criticized for being dark and humorless. This is false. Reviews may have mentioned those things, but they were not the reason they hated the movie.
    The reason they hated the movie was the lazy and poorly structured plot and complete lack of characterization.
    Quoting from the top RT critics reviews:

    The MCU formula is expressly designed to draw in as many ticket buyers as possible which means they have to play to the lowest common denominator. Jokes targeted at 13 year olds is that common denominator. Mom and dad are happy to take the kiddies to those movies because they are just comedies with some action and cool CGI. Nothing wrong with that, Disney makes a ton of money and I am a stockholder so more power to them. I enjoy the MCU movies also. I just like a little variety and hope that not every studio follows the formula.

      And I do as well. My favorite superhero movie to come out of 2017 was Logan. The issue here is that I don't agree something being non-comedic or "different from what Marvel is doing" automatically makes it good.
      That's sort of the whole crux of this ongoing Marvel vs. DC debate. People try to boiling it down to the mixed-to-bad reception many of the previous DCEU movies got to critics and audiences not liking anything different from Marvel or anything that doesn't have a bunch of jokes, which ignores that most of those people just thought some of these flicks sucked regardless of whether or not they were humorous.
      Case in point, Suicide Squad was pretty much reshot and choppily stitched together into a Guardians of the Galaxy clone, and is still considered quite shit.

    Here’s what I find the most interesting, but little acknowledged in this conversation; diehard DC fans want Batman & Kent to be seen as the gold standards. They’re supposed to be on a completely different level then any other comic book character.
    When critics & general audiences expect that higher level of excellence, and it falls short, those same diehard DC fans complain that other movies get away with it.
    They can’t have it both ways; either expect more from those characters & accept they’ll be more strict criticism or have them be no better then any other character & want the same lower standards.

      You see the thing is the comedy is for us and not them, Banner was being serious in that scene with us the audience seeing the funny part and he was in character. When Stark says to Starlord "yeah that's on Earth dipshit" we all laugh but Stark is being serious.
      To go back to Die Hard, there's a moment where the baddie who is shown to be a cold blooded killer has John's wife at gunpoint yet John wisecracks at it and us the audience laugh. It works because John is in character, the same applies to Banner or Stark in Avengers and that is they are in character.
      You problem is you prefer all moody and serious and you think comedy should be in comedy films only. As The Joker says "Why so serious"?

      One-liners aren't inherently funny. They're witty, yes, but not all of them are funny. They're just something for the hero to say to make them sound more badass. What MCU films usually do is says lines that are supposed to be funny. At times this would be okay, but then some films like CW and GoTG 2 had characters spouting off "jokes" at the most inappropriate times, i.e. "scenes that were meant to be serious". Again, sometimes this would okay, but when each MCU film after Avengers and GotG 1 made a trend where characters are spouting off jokes or doing comedic shtick, it becomes irritating. Die Hard was a franchise that known for its humor from the ONE witty hero. In the MCU, every hero is spouting comedic jokes that there's distinction between them. Everyone's a witty bastard, with some characters just being more funny than others.
      Going back to make example of Banner slapping himself in IW, that was inappropriate time. We just saw earlier Thanos and men kill the Asgardians and Loki, and leave Thor to die. And now we see two of his men about to fight in order to get Strange's Time Stone. What should be a hair-raising fight where audiences are worried of another important character possibly dying gets completely neutered because audiences are pissing in their pants from laughter due to Banner repeatedly slapping himself during the fight.

      I can't remember. "Blanket for the whole MCU"? This is something that even people who do like the MCU films even point out. What made Winter Solider, and to a lesser degree, IW and CW viewed looked more fondly post-Avengers was because the films were more serious. They didn't have a lot of comedic moments.
      My entire theater was laughing when Banner started slapping himself. If the scene was meant to be serious, then that's on Russos' part for failing to convey that mood to audiences.

By the way yeah John wise cracks all the time, even in a big life and death situation at the end with the fate of wife at state he still wise cracks, hell the line "Yippee ki-kay Mother Fucker" is usually at the part where its an all or nothing moment. Despite all this though Die Hard is considered to be the best American action movie of time, have one of the best villains in film and made Willis a massive movie star.
      I can assure you Die Hard despite the very real stakes has more wise cracking and jokes then any Marvel movie what isn't trying to be a comedy (Guardians, Any Man and Ragnarok). Its just Die Hard didn't release when edge-lords decided comedy was a bad thing.

I loved Wonder Woman, but it seems abundantly clear to me that they went super easy on that film regarding several things that, in any other movie, they trash on. And I can’t help but assume it’s because it was a female lead movie.
Then there’s the bias in taste, which is just as obvious to see - praising TLJ and Civil War while hating on BvS, which do some of the exact same things and yet earned opposite reactions for those things; praising dark superhero movies like TDK, Logan, etc. but also complaining that BvS was too dark. And so on.
Then there’s all the cult classics and comedies and such that they dislike, while praising Hallmark-level-cheesy movies like The Christmas Chronicles.
The bias and flagrant lack of reason or consistency is ridiculous.

And there’s no need to talk about specific individual ones, so I won’t be wasting the time doing that. Most critics liked that movie according to RT, so there you go.

It's not the comparison with Marvel which saddens me, but mostly their comparison with "Thor 1", which has one of the worst action scenes in the MCU franchise, they could have at least compared it with Iron Man 1 but noooo because it's "just DC".

        The MCU has had 4 other movies that have crossed the billion mark, not too many other franchises can say they have crossed the billion mark so often and it’s not close. Batman Begins made over 374M on a 150M budget not including DVDs and merchandise so they did much better than “barely” making their money back lol.

  Even though Aquaman does have serious and dark stories? Most DC characters have dark stories. Even in ZaQueerdo's DCAU gif, Aquaman in that cartoon was a serious mofo. He never joked around. What people's complaints are that Marvel overuses their jokes. Yes the comics are lighthearted at times, but when they are constantly making jokes even during life and death situations, it kills the tension and basically tells audiences that they don't have to take anything seriously. That's the main issue that people have towards jokes, and even some Marvel fans have echoed those complaints.

But regardless of whatever, the fact remains that one of the loudest complaints about BvS among the critics at the very least was that it was too dark and humorless. Regardless of what you believe, that they complained about that is true. And I agree, it’s very hypocritical and ridiculous of them, considering how dark movies they loved like TDK were, but still that didn’t stop them. That’s part of why critics suck.

        These are all of the best sources we have for gathering that information, and they are generally reflective of reality. Plus I also included sources like CinemaScore, which, unlike the hugely popular and widely known IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes sites that are used by many thousands of people, actually has controlled surveys at specific theaters done on opening night. All of the information on all of these sites agrees that most who saw it seemed to like it. Not sure why that’s shocking to you, seeing as it is a fact of life that most people tend to like most things. You really find it a surprise that the same general audience that adores movies like Transformers and Suicide Squad could like BvS? I mean, there’s next to no standards for them, so it’s not like their liking BvS means it’s a masterpiece or anything. It’s just a fact, and I’m tired of people denying it.

        It can't be said enough: 69% second weekend drop, against no competition. That doesn't happen to "well-liked" movies.
        You're going to blame the critics, of course. If a movie is well-liked, bad reviews won't matter. The Greatest Showman was panned (36% RT top critics) and it didn't matter to audiences. It opened with about $9M and went up 76 percent to $15M in its second weekend. It didn't decrease from $9 million until its sixth weekend.
        Its final gross was almost 20x its opening. BvS didn't reach 2x. Now, which one did audiences like, critics be damned?

      The reason they hated the movie was the lazy and poorly structured plot and complete lack of characterization.

    The problem with that argument is that "people" in this context are clearly very myopic, since even the more comedic Marvel films tend to be extremely successful. There are people who dislike jokes in their superhero movies, but by all available evidence they're either a very small minority or the jokes don't bother them enough to not actually watch the flicks.

      The MCU formula is expressly designed to draw in as many ticket buyers as possible which means they have to play to the lowest common denominator. Jokes targeted at 13 year olds is that common denominator. Mom and dad are happy to take the kiddies to those movies because they are just comedies with some action and cool CGI. Nothing wrong with that, Disney makes a ton of money and I am a stockholder so more power to them. I enjoy the MCU movies also. People try to boiling it down to the mixed-to-bad reception many of the previous DCEU movies got to critics and audiences not liking anything different from Marvel or anything that doesn't have a bunch of jokes, which ignores that most of those people just thought some of these flicks sucked regardless of whether or not they were humorous.
        Case in point, Suicide Squad was pretty much reshot and choppily stitched together into a Guardians of the Galaxy clone, and is still considered quite shit.

    Days of the Future Past is the 7th movie of the X-Men franchise, a franchise known for 14 years when it was released, a fresh franchise with zero rebooted characters, which was there way before MCU or DCEU.
    Batman v Superman is the 2nd movie of a rebooted DC franchise, a franchise known for 3 years when it was released, with all rebooted characters that nobody really give a f*ck anymore when they think about Christopher Reeve or Christian Bale movies, which came after everyone when the marketplace was already full of CBM.

      Here’s what I find the most interesting, but little acknowledged in this conversation; diehard DC fans want Batman & Kent to be seen as the gold standards. They’re supposed to be on a completely different level then any other comic book character.
      When critics & general audiences expect that higher level of excellence, and it falls short, those same diehard DC fans complain that other movies get away with it.
      They can’t have it both ways; either expect more from those characters & accept they’ll be more strict criticism or have them be no better then any other character & want the same lower standards.

    McClane & Riggs used humor, wit, & one-liners at various points. Even in life & death situations. I don’t recall hearing complaints about it.

        You see the thing is the comedy is for us and not them, Banner was being serious in that scene with us the audience seeing the funny part and he was in character. When Stark says to Starlord "yeah that's on Earth dipshit" we all laugh but Stark is being serious.
        To go back to Die Hard, there's a moment where the baddie who is shown to be a cold blooded killer has John's wife at gunpoint yet John wisecracks at it and us the audience laugh. It works because John is in character, the same applies to Banner or Stark in Avengers and that is they are in character.
        You problem is you prefer all moody and serious and you think comedy should be in comedy films only. As The Joker says "Why so serious"?

        One-liners aren't inherently funny. They're witty, yes, but not all of them are funny. They're just something for the hero to say to make them sound more badass. What MCU films usually do is says lines that are supposed to be funny. At times this would be okay, but then some films like CW and GoTG 2 had characters spouting off "jokes" at the most inappropriate times, i.e. "scenes that were meant to be serious". Again, sometimes this would okay, but when each MCU film after Avengers and GotG 1 made a trend where characters are spouting off jokes or doing comedic shtick, it becomes irritating. Die Hard was a franchise that known for its humor from the ONE witty hero. In the MCU, every hero is spouting comedic jokes that there's distinction between them. Everyone's a witty bastard, with some characters just being more funny than others.
        Going back to make example of Banner slapping himself in IW, that was inappropriate time. We just saw earlier Thanos and men kill the Asgardians and Loki, and leave Thor to die. And now we see two of his men about to fight in order to get Strange's Time Stone. What should be a hair-raising fight where audiences are worried of another important character possibly dying gets completely neutered because audiences are pissing in their pants from laughter due to Banner repeatedly slapping himself during the fight.

        I can't remember. "Blanket for the whole MCU"? This is something that even people who do like the MCU films even point out. What made Winter Solider, and to a lesser degree, IW and CW viewed looked more fondly post-Avengers was because the films were more serious. They didn't have a lot of comedic moments.
        My entire theater was laughing when Banner started slapping himself. If the scene was meant to be serious, then that's on Russos' part for failing to convey that mood to audiences.

By the way yeah John wise cracks all the time, even in a big life and death situation at the end with the fate of wife at state he still wise cracks, hell the line "Yippee ki-kay Mother Fucker" is usually at the part where its an all or nothing moment. Despite all this though Die Hard is considered to be the best American action movie of time, have one of the best villains in film and made Willis a massive movie star.
        I can assure you Die Hard despite the very real stakes has more wise cracking and jokes then any Marvel movie what isn't trying to be a comedy (Guardians, Any Man and Ragnarok). Its just Die Hard didn't release when edge-lords decided comedy was a bad thing.

        No, they didn't. Only Cavill's agent said "the cape is still in the closet." WB gave a generic "politician mental gymnastics" non-answer by dancing around the question with BS "we still have a great relationship with Henry Cavill" which neither confirmed nor denied whether he'd be Superman anymore. And then Cavill further complicated matters with his vague instagram post of raising a Superman figure and then lowering it with a scowl on his face.
        As of now until further notice, one can be forgiven for assuming that Henry is not going to be Superman anymore.

  I loved Wonder Woman, but it seems abundantly clear to me that they went super easy on that film regarding several things that, in any other movie, they trash on. And I can’t help but assume it’s because it was a female lead movie.
  Then there’s the bias in taste, which is just as obvious to see - praising TLJ and Civil War while hating on BvS, which do some of the exact same things and yet earned opposite reactions for those things; praising dark superhero movies like TDK, Logan, etc. but also complaining that BvS was too dark. And so on.
  Then there’s all the cult classics and comedies and such that they dislike, while praising Hallmark-level-cheesy movies like The Christmas Chronicles.
  The bias and flagrant lack of reason or consistency is ridiculous.

      There’s definitely an overlap when the majority agree/disagree in each case. I’m talking about critics in general (and thus their accumulated score on RT), not specific individual ones. And there’s no need to talk about specific individual ones, so I won’t be wasting the time doing that. Most critics liked that movie according to RT, so there you go.
      Yeah it is. Every movie should be fairly and consistently judged based on nothing but its quality alone.

I really fucking hate how many critics are calling this a good Marvel film.

  It's not the comparison with Marvel which saddens me, but mostly their comparison with "Thor 1", which has one of the worst action scenes in the MCU franchise, they could have at least compared it with Iron Man 1 but noooo because it's "just DC".

        I've just watched the first trailer and believe me I don't have any problems with the color palette, it looks beautiful like Valerian and not the shitty red Windows Movie Maker filter used by Joss Whedon. What I've been saying. A good fun movie and that's it. Which is what we wanted from the beginning so I'm glad. I just wonder how much it helped that we all had our expectation on the floor given DC's track record. Glad it comes out earlier in my country.
