Here's why 'Justice League' had a random Russian family

If you haven't heard, a little movie called Avengers: Infinity War came out last month. Thrillist published a big interview with major players at Marvel who worked on the first two movies, and one of those people was Justice League writer/director Joss Whedon -- who also wrote and directed The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Remember the Russian family in Justice League? We see them sheltered in their home before trying to escape the parademon invasion by truck. That plot line seemed a little out of place, almost kind of random, but this new interview with Whedon makes it crystal clear as to why he added civilians during the Justice League reshoots. Here's what he had to say about wanting to do the same thing on his Avengers movies:

Joss Whedon: The only stuff we shot that really wasn't useful was stuff I shot. I shot probably three days in both films tracking civilians, because I was like, "These guys have superpowers, then they're the Avengers. Nobody's going to worry about them." The audience is going to want to know these civilians better. And the answer was always like, "No they don't. No they fucking don't."

His next comment was about superheroes helping civilians on the ground level, which again, mirrors some of his scenes from Justice League. We see The Flash and Superman break away from the Steppenwolf fight to help the people in Russia.

Joss Whedon: But what it's like for the people on the ground… that's always gonna be important to me. Like there's Hawkeye helping people off the bus. You have to have somebody who works at ground level who's taking care of the smaller stuff. We probably had half an hours worth of fight of the Avengers versus Chitauri. We had so much more than we could use. But pulling the kid out of the bus it was in and then it was out, then it was in, then it was out, and then my daughter was like, "We should have that." I'm like, "Yeah, actually. OK, it's in."

I actually don't think Whedon's idea of tracking civilians is a bad one, it just wasn't able to be that meaningful in Justice League. The two hour mandate from Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara probably didn't help with that.

collateral damage and helping the people on the ground (which is what being a superhero is actually about) is very important and it's stupid that so many movies ignore it. After all these people are superheroes because they want to protect the people.
Thats why I love the Civil War movie which explicitly addressed how these superhero brawls actually can ruin the lives of so many of the peope they actually fight to protect. Dealing with the fallout of collateral damage and with the peoples lives that are affected by them is something that I find very human and important and which makes it more then just CG spectacle (which is certainly awesome too).
And especially characters like Superman and Flash are well known for being concerned about the innocent bystanders and making protecting them their first priority. You see that in the comics all the time. So Joss absolutely got it right (I mean of course he did , the man breathes comic books) when he had Superman and Flash favor protecting innocent civililans over beating the shit out of the alien invader. That is what they do.
It just pisses me off when studio executives as well as some "fans" are basically like "Fuck humanity, I just want them to wreck stuff"

  Although I don't necessarily disagree with you, it should be taken into account that in comics this doesn't happen so often either. Like these movies, there are always minor scenes of a hero saving someone, but unless it is necessary for the plot, it doesn't always have that importance and basically they just go straight to the point. Same with the animated series; there was always destruction everywhere but few times they went into the buildings to rescue people.
  On a side note, I find what you said about Civil War rather funny because although they mentioned that in that movie, they never took into account in the actual movies where that happened. However, it was MoS that got bad rap over it even if it is a major comicbook trope... Oh well

    that was the point of Civil War. That it was not taken into account when it happened. I mean thats what Ross is basically telling the Avengers when he shows them the footage of New York, Washington and Sokovia.

        Again, I know. What I'm trying to say is that, in the case the movie wouldn't have been made, or wouldn't have added that plot point, no one would have batted an eye regarding how many people we saw them saving

        Civil War retroactively explores unaccountable heroes and their collateral damage: Amazing. None of the previous movies needed to because it's covered here anyway.
        BvS does the same: So what? Also, why didn't MoS (which was partially about this very thing)? ;p

        Batman's secret contingency plans are a much more believable method of illustrating this concept than Tony saying something that everyone should really be in disbelief about if they have a basic functioning human brain. I love the idea, but they didn't sell it here - especially because it fundamentally contradicts Tony's behavior and decision to be Iron Man at all.
        He deliberately stepped above being checked so he could do things unchecked. That's what Iron Man does. ("We've always been criminals, Alfred.") I was sad that there wasn't much to see with regard to mending friendships/relationships and re-establishing trust after CW. Everyone was just kind of normal again.
        Waller sells the idea better, even though we can determine that she's wrong. At least it's believable from someone in her position with her worldview to be skeptical. She's also critical of a far different threat in terms of magnitude - Superman is godly compared to the Avengers - so it's more understandable.

        Exactly. Tony even ran from the military in his first film, cause he knew he was doing something illegal. Christ, they made him be such a huge hypocrite in Civil War.
        And I do like that while Waller is willing to do sneaky and downright evil things to protect the world, she still saw that Superman was a good person. It's a nice minor touch to her character, and contradicts her from BvS Batman.

        I love Marvel's films even if they aren't perfect. People get so tribal about these movies, letting their nitpicks overtake the experience when they have a negative bias, and letting their excitement dust away things that would otherwise be complaints when they have a positive bias.

        That's my point, even I'd argue we saw Superman saving more people in MoS than in many of the MCU stand-alones. Seriously, just watching the movies (more so in the first phase) you can see how focused they were in the heroes but not what happened around. I'd say First Avenger is the exception here, but the rest? For example, Iron Man only saved people once in his first outing (tank missile scene).

      The movie Winter Solder and the destruction of Washington DC was insane, he only needed to root out and kill a core group in the hydra leadership hidden in SHIELD but he wrecked 3 new Helicarries with crew on board several buildings and obviously killed a lot of people who were not Hydra. Captain America actually is a War Criminal and exactly why they wanted the Sokovia. Accords

    The kicker is that, all along, MoS was wrongly criticized for it, and BvS very obviously focuses on the topic too, which the people complaining prior tend to just dust away to deliberately avoid acknowledging their (already bogus) criticism was addressed.
    I would say BvS much more intimately explores the concept of superhero blowback and accountability, but is given no credit for it.

      One of the reasons why BvS is my second favorite DCEU film and why I feel it was better than Justice League. Superman is mentally dealing with the consequences of his actions and inactions and still gives up his life for humanity.

  They cut out more of the ground interaction in avengers as some scenes showed the cops and army could in fact have dealt with the Chitari grunts, but i think that is part of heroship to lead and encourage not do it all. Also was hoping Beth to turn into super waitress.

        I honestly never really came across people who complain about the collateral damage in MOS. What I've honestly only seen when that discussion is brought up is;
        1) 85% of the related comments are from people who complain about --> people who complain about the collateral damage in MoS.
        2) 10% of people who argue that Supes could've changed the direction of the fight somewhere like in an open grassland of field, somewhere which is nowhere near the city. Not my argument, just pointing out what I've mostly seen as arguments.
        3) 5% of people who actually do complain about the collateral damage in MoS.
        I probably joined in very late after that discussion had been debated about, as I've honestly never seen a large sum of people who do complain about sentence (3).

  I loved that Flash was the "get the civvies to safety" guy because that makes the most sense. His connection to the Speed Force protects people while he's moving them at those incredible speeds and he can get them out of harm's way much faster than, say, Batman and his two person Batmobile.

  I get the reasoning for wanting to portray 'normal civilians on the ground' because Joss thinks it makes the film more relatable for the audience, but this is a flawed concept, here's why - It takes away from the relate-ability of the characters the audience should be caring about.
  If you have this big montage in which the audience are put in the shoes of the civilian bystanders, then the audience loses that connection with the main characters, it's why audiences haven't connected with superman, because they keep showing normies getting buildings dropped on their heads and forcing the audience to sympathise/connect with them, at the expense of the title character. When this happens, We no longer see the superheroes as relatable characters, but as coldly un-relatable gods who are vastly different from any of us. We now see them as far away beings that fly around cities doing impossible things and our connection to them is lost.
  There is a way of showing that these characters care about the public however, especially in disaster scenarios, but showing a load of 9/11 porn of hundreds of strangers in morbid terror isn't the way. Spider-man Homecoming handled this perfectly - If you noticed, anyone that was ever put in danger, Peter already knew and had a relationship with, to some extent (his school friends & the guy at the deli) but the one time Peter did put a boat full of people in imminent danger, he got bailed out by his father figure, told off big time and learnt a huge lesson, which made him more relatable!

  In comic books, they very rarely show heroes being concerned about civilian collateral damage until after the deaths. Hell,. Hulk DESTROYED Vegas, and then they realized it was "too late"

  With all the destruction of IW, there is never a moment of interaction with or helping civilians. D-ney figured out after Avengers that it just doesn't translate in film. Best case in point, The Russian Family.
  D-ney no longer used civilians in any Marvel film after Avengers and to a small extent AoU.
  The question is, since Marvel already did the work for DC, why did Whedon still push this part of the story when he knew this kind of thing doesn't translate well in film?
  It was one of the worst, most cringeworthy parts of JL.

        I didn't hate this moment, honestly. I just wish it gelled better and didn't feel artificially injected. The idea of the Flash smiling and trying to comfort a foreign girl is sweet to me.
        The muddy, fake looking CG background is definitely a little distracting.

        The complaint here is literally about how the story was detracted from due to this Russian family’s forced inclusion. Some of the most common criticisms among all people of JL include its lack of character development. That is substance. And it’s more essential substance than this little Russian side story for sure.

        But make it natural. Don't just toss in some people we don't know anything about, and then focus on them repeatedly during the climax. This is like if in MoS we never see Perry and his workers, but the film keeps focusing on them during the BZ event.

  The DCEU had their chance to do specifically just that with solo films before getting to a point where Justice League was necessary. So much character development potential was there, but they had to rush.
  Instead we got this rushed pile of crap. At least showing actual people in danger acknowledges the fact that this a goddamn War for the Planet of the Human race. They've got to sprinkle a little bit of that somewhere.

    Disagree a tad here. Although it's true that in the end WB rushed things, they didn't have to follow Marvel formula. Just by judging from all the leaked stuff that was cut rom the movie, it's clear the new players had enough time dedicated to them to at the very least spark some interest on them just like what happened to Wonder Woman with her appearance in BvS.
    And let's be honest, not all team-ups have needed their characters to be introduced before and, as I said in other comment, almost none cb movie focus on the people being saved, just a few scenes here and there. In fact, as I said in that very same comment, even MoS and BvS, despite the criticism they have about this topic, showed a lot more of people being saved than in lots of other cbms. Just watching the movies proves this point to be true ;)

      They could've added the extra leaked stuff but that would've made the movie much longer and the general audience probably don't want to go through that.
      Despite this idea of the, "Marvel formula" it's honestly the best way to establish a character before moving on to the bigger, grande movie.
      I remember as a young teen thinking, "what the hell? The Incredible Hulk is connected to Iron Man 1?! Does this mean we're getting the Avengers?!!!" It built up so much hype for Cap & Thor 1 until we eventually got around to The Avengers.
      It reminds me of watching Batman: The Animated Series, and I didn't know it was connected to the Superman Animated series and once that crossover happened I was once again like, "Oh my God, holy crap!". That was before the Marvel Formula and it gave off that same established character feel and once the crossover happened it was an amazing moment.
      I honestly believe the DCEU should've followed that path, it would've made things a whole lot easier for them.

I actually really like the concept and the fact that they used it. I do think it's important to take a moment to look at the people these heroes are saving, and I like the thought of looking at these things from a civilian standpoint. It's actually a moment I loved in Infinity War too when the Black Order first arrive and you just see everything at first from total ground level. (Another instance is the first scene from BvS) although I'm a bit off point now.. haha

Helping the civilians is important, completely. BUT. You need to write a good screenplay from scratch contemplating the part of saving civilians. Adding that stuff in reshoots and in any random moment during the final battle (also, showing only ONE family) wouldn't work in any scenario. The idea, the intention behind it was good, but the execution didn't help it. We only can blame the poor screenplay that Snyder and Terrio pulled off before Whedon joined the film.

    Yeah, I didn't say it wasn't also Joss' fault, but if the screenplay had been better from the start, contemplating the civilian part (something Snyder keep forgetting about), then Joss or any other person would have to do something about it. The screenplay that Snyder directed was bad from the start. The re shoots and Warner poor organization didn't help.

      Man of Steel and Batman v Superman were heavily considerate of the civilian side of things.
      The heart of both movies is asking the question "How would humanity react to Superman?" while Superman is doing his best to save people even when it seems like it might cause negative social/political blowback, and even when it's scary or could cost him his life.
      We see him saving plenty of people, both individually and globally.
      This has always been such a confusing complaint about Snyder.

        My feeling is that the problem isn't that Snyder doesn't have Supes save a bunch of civilians, but rather that there isn't much substance behind most of them (save for a few of course) which contributes to an overall feeling that he ended up saving nobody at all. It shouldn't necessarily be a numbers game. Having watched the video you posted, the only ones that ended up mattering to me were Lois, his work family at the Daily Planet, and probably the kids in the school bus. There was a more "human" element to those particular scenes which I think actually contributes to Clark's growth as a character, vs I dunno, telling some rando bystanders to seek shelter.
        I agree with Martin Xicarts above there that the screenplay is kinda bad from the start because with Snyder/WB's choice to kinda just dive right in ended up not really quite gelling and many many characters are lacking a lot of meat. Which is why I think it contrasts with Wonder Woman's success is because we got to see more of her interacting with commonfolk.
        Remembering JL I actually appreciated the little touches sprinkled in there like the cell phone footage in the opening, that stupid lame joke that Lois shares with Martha, and even the Russian family with Flash and Superman (even though the entire setting location highlights my issue with the DCEU overall, but I'll leave that rant for a different comment).

        Personally, I enjoyed and appreciated the other 'numbers', and don't feel they all need to be individually fleshed out. The act alone speaks for itself, as do the quietly portrayed savior moments of BvS.
        Some of them were more fleshed out when it served the story and character development, and I found that to be plenty, because the story has to keep moving and the point was well driven (in my opinion).
        Hopefully WB has learned from WW's success in the right ways. They seem to be responding to all this by giving Wan and Jenkins a lot of creative freedom to work their magic.
        The JL scenes you liked I like on paper, but I feel could have been handled with more class. Especially the opening scene. Beautiful idea, but oof.
        Either way, I respect you for civilly rounding out your point of view,
        and I share your desire to see this sort of thing portrayed in
        superhero films, even if we draw different measurements of what
        quantifies and how much, or if we prefer it in different flavors. :)

        I think what some people are doing with these scenes is taking them at face value in isolation, instead of applying full knowledge/evidence of the warmth we already know is inside Clark from other scenes, and from Man of Steel.
        They see Superman floating there in silence in one scene, face obscured, and somehow forget about Clark showing up with flowers for Lois, smiling like a genuine teddy bear, then climbing into the tub to cheer her up. They forget about him hugging his proud mother in the sunlight, and speaking with her about finding his place in the world.
        As the audience, we know who Superman is. We should know better than to view him as scary, and we should know that the film is simply illustrating different points of view to appropriately flesh out the narrative, which is a logical experience to expect from society, making it fascinating to me.
        The intention is to take a familiar character and tell a striking, challenging story about him, which isn't rocket science, but it seems like people can't handle him not behaving one specific way at all times, which has never been the case for Superman. He's been challenged with serious, dour situations before, and reacted seriously. This doesn't magically negate his heroism, his smile, or his heart in the movies any more than it does in the comics.
        Anyway, I think you get it. Just getting it off my chest. lol :)

        To me, all bets are off once they had Clark call his mom in the middle of the night. You can't get anymore human or ask for sympathy by having him do that. When was the last time you saw a hero of his stature do that in a film? You would only expect something like from Peter Parker.
        And yet people say that he's some unsympathetic douchebag who doesn't care about anyone else.

        Batman is supposed to be a jerk (or at least misguided) in BvS until the end, to be fair. But I must say I have to disagree about the believability of his motivations. I found Batman’s motives against Superman as a mirror of America’s paranoia and xenophobia in response to the events of 9/11 quite compelling, and it fit well with his character’s deluding rage and trauma that sort of acts as a foundation for it all.

        Yeah, though I still like to consider him more of an anti-hero and I see how it is feasible for perhaps a TDK Trilogy style Batman to get the the point BvS Batman is at with the same respective trials and time put into his life, seeing him being in a more antagonistic role was a bit of a shock to me as well. I do appreciate the redemptive character arc we got out of it, though, and yeah, it would be hard to have the “versus” without that, haha xD

        Hit that right on the nail my friend. What I felt like the movies lacked at many points was just more of Clark being with Lois, and more of Clark being his mother's son. I definitely do think that the way of telling the challenging side of his story came a little too early and a little too muddled for the opening to a saga. Part of what I attribute to WW's success is that she got an origin story. MoS tried to hit the ground running but I felt like kind of cheated me out of getting to know who he is as a person. That's to say I'm not closed off to challenging storylines about Superman, but something I expected to maybe come from MoS 2 and or 3, when he's had enough screentime to properly earn his scars and gather up some sludge.
        Here's to hoping muh boi Aquaman and Shazam get proper intro/reintroductions into the universe.

        I guess I'm not saying it wasn't human, but touching on that I felt we needed more Swanwick. I want to know who Superman has in his corner. Taking my example of the sinking school bus. He saves Lana and then doubles back to go save the bully. Then it cuts there, and I was left wondering if maybe Lana and him became good friends after that or even the bully Pete (the next time we see him is as an adult at the IHOP). I know screen time is valuable but I maybe wished they'd threw in a scene after where maybe Pete and or Lana the next day sit with him at an empty lunch table and we see them for a bond. Something small but imo would've added weight to his entire history as Superman. I wonder if Clark had friends at all in school.
        From a storytelling perspective, it's just something I would've liked to have seen develop. Instead it felt like everyone was just a means to an end. Just a shortcut to try to fast forward to present day Clark and we just kind of have to accept what was handed to us and assume all his growing happened offscreen. A criticism I have of the DCEU as it's been laid out so far is that it lacks a lot of "connective tissue" and to me it felt like Snyder/WB underestimated kind of really little mundane things that at the surface seem superficial, but end up adding some real meat to characters and their chemistry with other smaller characters. And I feel like I can't stress that last part enough.

        The entire point of Superman’s character in these movies is that he can’t stop saving people and doing the right thing, no matter how hard things get. This is a theme explored in extraordinary depth in both MoS and BvS. There is no excuse for the haters not to get it at this point.

        The real superman WOULD wear that goofy smile on his face. But Snyder kind of insists that he wouldn't. Let me draw a parallel from WW. The tank scene in that little town. After the team alley-oops Diana crashing into the church, the townsfolk all walk out after the dust settles and immediately cheers and applauds their savior. Closeup of WW's face as she realizes that she did something heroic and she cracks...oh lord...is that a smile? The next scene shows her immediately down there at ground zero shaking hands, embracing people, making human connections.
        Absolutely beautiful scene. Yet I don't see why Superman, who by his upbringing should make him far more friendly, instead had to just kinda stand still for an oil painting of himself.
        I'm making hyperbole but I hope you get where I am coming from. Heart and warmth don't always have to be sacrificed for the sake of drama.

        Just swooping by to tell you I feel ya. Snyder/WB needs to have a better way to highlight all the positives about Superman and his interaction with normal people instead of forcing these really unnatural CB scenes just for the sake of saying he stuck with the source material. I've always kinda said that Snyder would be great at like photographing stills, than creating onscreen chemistry. I mean from what @Kouglof:disqus posted about the forced civilian scenes. The problem was that those scenes felt exactly that; forced. After Superman flies down with the kid from the burning building, everyone reaches out to try to touch him? They wouldn't...I know I certainly wouldn't. Instinct would be to cheer and clap. Because normal people are happy and grateful when you've arrived to save them. The only people that should be justified in crying are probably the immediate family and everyone else probably would be cheering. The scene with superman hovering over the flash flood. Snyder decided to just kinda hold him up there in the air for a god awfully unnatural amount of time, just for the sake of a cool shot even though Superman would've been down there in a split second. And we never see him doing the actual heroic thing of picking those people up. Just my two cents.

        You’re missing the point. We get plenty of moments in MoS and BvS of Superman saving people in more personal, warmer ways. Those two moments were to show some of the world’s perception of him as some kind of god. Which would in fact happen with some people, no doubt about it, and I can totally see a group expressing that through touching him in that way. And both of those scenes were taken from shots within actual comics, if I remember right. But they still convey the essential information just fine - people need help, and Superman arrives to help. That’s everything we need to know. It just frames it in such a way as to show us how some of the world reacts to his presence, which is essential information to get for the story of the movie. Also, pretty sure that “unnatural amount of time” was in slow-mo or something, by the way.

I like how people was an important theme un MoS and BvS, and I really wanted to see a scene where Superman realizes that having a team makes easier to fight and save people, but having only this family with many scenes was boring/random. It would have been better having many people, like in MoS.

It's a pretty good idea to let the audience get to know some civilians, so that saving them later in the movie has a bigger impact. Nolan kinda did it in BB when Batman meets that kid with a troubled family in the alley and hands him one of his gadgets. Then you see the kid later in the movie and Batman saves him. It works.
But yeah, Whedon was pretty limited in JL, mainly because it wasn't his movie. I'm pretty sure he would have made a pretty good job had he been fully in charge from the begining. He's a great filmmaker.
Overall, I think Whedon made the Avengers feel like real heros who cared about people, while Zack Snyder made Superman feel like saving people was painful.

        It doesn't have to be torment most of the time either. Ideally you have to balance emotions. Superman's emotions in MoS and BvS however were mostly negative, with a very few exeptions.
        Yeah, he chose to save people, but again it was more like something he had to do, rather than something he enjoyed doing.
        That's why people criticized Snyder's Superman in regards to saving people. It's not that he didn't save people. He pretty much saved all humanity. It's just the way he did it felt completely meh, and barely had any emotional impact to the audience.

        Yeah, he smiles a few times, but most of the times he's frowning and having negative emotions. Sure BvS was supposed to be dark, but 2 dark/serious Superman movies is too much, specially for a character like Superman.
        Look at WW. Set in war times and it still manages to show the light side of Diana and the world. You see her smilinig often, being charming, caring, etc, but she's also serious and a total badass when she has to be. That's how Superman should have been handled.
        Remember, the audience doesn't lie about how they feel. If so many people felt the same way about Superman, then there was something wrong with it.

        Because WW was supposed to be a pure person. Her mother didn't teach her how cruel the world can actually be. Diana was one step away from being naively childish. She only saw the good and believed people were manipulated into fighting each other.
        Clark on the other hand was taught at a young age that the world is a scary place. Even as a child, he felt confused and lost. it's not until he learns his origins when we see him be really happy. Again with Diana, she already found her happy place.

        No, they chose to portray the world he lives in a realistic fashion. And it wasn't a rejection storyline. It was a story about the search for his identity and acceptance of kalel of his new home.

        He did show happiness at saving someone. He smiled when he saved the girl from the burning building.

        I love the plane scene. Not a perfect movie, but it has it's moments. Brandon really had/has the stuff to play a fantastic Superman, but I wish his costume were different. Between the hair, the costume, and the blue contacts, he felt very plasticky and fake.
        I signed a couple of petitions to bring him back as Superman before Henry was cast. haha :) At least he's doing a great job as the Atom now. Probably my favorite character in Legends.

        My take was: He was grateful she was alive after such a grave situation and needed to show her how much he cared in case he never got another chance.

        Unlike most other (good) movies, MoS romance was severely underdeveloped. Think about how many times Clark and Lois interacted in a flirty/emotional way before they kissed. One? Two at most? That's why the kiss felt so out of place to some people. Not to mention they were surrounded by death and destruction.
        I wouldn't say people love each other quickly in movies. Usually romance in movies culminates with a kiss. When people do love each other it's oftten because they have known each other for a while. In MoS, Clark and Lois had known each other for probably just a few weeks, and again, they barely had any romantic interactions.
        So no, I don't think Clark and Lois loved each other. Their kiss was fueled by attraction and heavy emotions, but the build up and context made it feel forced.

  But clark need to save people. You see it in MoS. It's almost in his DNA. The fact that he could frighten people being different make him sad. You see it in MoS and in BvS. He just doesn't know how to handle it. That's what is painful for him. But he's always glad to save people. Even sacrificing himself at the end of BvS he smiles to Lois because he knows he's doing the right thing.

    I don't see him being glad to save people. Not once, in fact. I see him looking like he is carrying some heavy burden. In MoS, he chooses to sacrifice his father's life because he asks him to preserve his identity for a few more years. That's the complete opposite of Superman. And the quick montage of him saving people that we get in BvS -- not once does he have meaningful connection with those he saves. Everything about this montage -- his face, the music, the visuals -- everything about it is designed to make us feel depressed and burdened, not inspired and connected. The perfect image to sum this all up, is his silhouette hovering over people stretching hands to him, as some faceless disinterested god. I was willing to let MoS slide. I excused it as a necessary evil of an origin story, expecting BvS to build up on his character, especially the tough choice that he had to make in killing Zod. But it didn't. Instead of growing, he regressed, only to try to pull humongous character development in the very end. But it was too late for that at that point. The audience did not give a damn about that Superman.
    Moreover, the comparison to Jesus is insulting. That's not how Jesus was. He did not mind having fun at parties and hanging out with common folks and children. He was all about people and the good life. Snyder does not understand Sups and he does not understand Jesus.

      He was gladd to save people. He smiled when he saved that girl from the burning building. He didn't choose anything. His father sacrifice himself so his would have more time to learn and grow. And it's not just a few more years. He was 17 at that time and when the world finally found out about him. He was 33.
      The superman montage was supposed to show mankind's projecting of its fear and ib securities onto superman despite all the good he is doing, they sill can't see as just him as just a guy trying to do the right thing.it wasn't designed to make people depressed or burdened. It was designed to be though provoking and to make you feel bad for superman. The shot of him floating in the sky doesn't make a disinterested God. It shows how there are people that see him as a symbol of hope. You are atchcicng this movie from a cynical.perspective and you falsely claim this movie is cynical and depressing when in fact you are just Indentifyin yours because of your preconceived notion's. You judged this movie based on what you wanted it to be not what it was.

        No, that barely noticeable two-sec smile he gave to the girl's mother is not nearly enough for emotional connection. Superman would never let someone sacrifice his life for him, especially not in such a meaningless way. What did he learn? I don't know, the movie does not tell me. The montage was designed and evoked the feelings of sadness, as opposed to inspiration. It sure succeed at making me sad for him. This Superman is sad, not inspiring. Yes, it does, he just floats there with no face visible. And on that note, of all the things that those people could bother to take with them on the the rooftop, like food or drinking water, they took a can of white paint. You're right, I wanted the movie to be intelligent and faithful to the comics. It was not, so I deemed it a failure.
        No, he is not. He quits and runs off, telling his girlfriend that Superman was not even his choice, but something his father forced on him. Jesus did not quit.

        Yeah move the goalpost. How long did he need to smile for you to establish an emotional connection ? 30 minutes with the camera zoomed in on his face ? And it was very noticeable and longer than two seconds. First off it wasn't meaningless as it protected Clark identity and gave him time to grown and learn, so he can bear the weight of the world. Secondly, he didn't let him do anything. He chose to sacrifice himself. The movie does tell. In fact it shows. It shows how much he trusted his father so what he learned is trust. The montage was designed to make you feel bad for superman. It's not supposed to inspire. It's supposed to be thought provoking and if you felt bad for superman, then mission accomplished. This superman is not sad. He is doubtful. There is a big difference. And he has his inspiring moments. No it doesn't. The logic behind your reasoning makes no sense. You see a brief second of him floating and his face not visible and all of a sudden you think that hw looks like an uncaring God ? That's ridiculous. If anything from the way the woman extends her hand to him shows how he is a symbol of hope. Did you not see the superman symbol painted on the rooftop ? That's basically an sos signal. The most important thing you take is means to call for help. All they had was that while paint and they used it. You claim you wanted it to be intelligent, yet you missed so much about that film and continue to twist things. You say you wanted the film to be faithful to the comics but which comics ? Considering you ignore the fact that most of the film especially the portrayal of this superman were pulled straight from the comics or were you cherry picking the comics ? You have a narrow point of view of this character. You deemed it a failure because you looked at it superficially.
        And yes he is. He never quit. He felt guilty and felt as failure because he failed to save those people. Hw cares about them just like jesus. He didn't run off. He took some time to think and refectory and when he was done, he came straight and resumed his role as superman. That's jesus.

        There was no growth shown. Not in the slightest. Nothing about his character changed since his father's death. And yes, he let him sacrifice himself for preservation of his secret identity, which Superman would never do.
        It was an idiotic scene where people scared by natural disaster took only white paint with them on the rooftop, and went to great lengths to paint a nice looking symbol. And I don't give a shit about how much they prayed to him. People pray to all sorts of indifferent God's -- I care about him not making emotional connection with them. And he doesn't make it. 2-sec guilty smile is all we get, and then they touch him. And he looks away. Right this Superman is ever self-doubting, and that's why he runs from people and does not inspire.
        Jesus spent all of his time with people and he never doubted. This Superman is only his image, not his essence.

    Yes, we all understand Superman's struggles, he's different, he's lonely. That doesn't mean he needs to be a tormented character, specially when his core is all the opposite.
    Smiling to Lois and his mother doesn't say much, as they are his loved ones. He barely talks to, connects or has a positive attitude towards the people he saves.

  Agree. I'm a Superman fan, but Snyder's Superman was just awfull. Not only he had zero personality, but he doesn't shows any concern about the civilians, and when he shows concern and save their lives, it's really bad executed, with the soundtrack and Superman facial expressions making look like he's doing something wrong, like he's being force to do this, and the Snyder's excuse of "Superman still young and inexperienced" doesn't make this look better. Being inexperienced and being naive are two different things. Spider man is a teenager hero and he makes mistakes, but he learns from it and improves himself, and none of the mistakes make him feel naive or dumb. Snyder's Superman just act like a child, who doesn't think about his actions or try learn from his mistakes. It feels like Snyder is one of these guys who think that 'Superman is boring and what he stands for is outdated" and try to fix by making him dark and edgy. But in the end. all he did was turning Superman in what he though he was before: a boring, undimensional and generic character, without any likable traits.

      I understood the point of both movies, but the problem is that, not only the ideias were badly executed, but it doesn't lead to anything. MoS tries tell a story about a young Superman, but that's just abandoned in middle and then the movie just become action scene after action scene after action scene, and in the end it doesn't feel like Superman learn anything (the whole "killing zod" could have worked, but failed because first it was never establish that killing people was a problem for Superman and second it's never brought up again in the movie). About BvS, it had a lot of ideias, the problem is that all these ideias are either forgotten or just ended in poorly way (ex: the MARTHA thing).
      All these ideias were good, but they were done better in the comics: How people will react to Superman's arrival (Superman Birthright and Secret Origins) Superman killing Zod (John Byrne's run on Superman) Batman becoming more dark and gritty (Batman a lonely place of dying). All these stories worked because the had good and interesting characters and the ideias that were developted in the end, not left to deal with it in the next stories. That's why Wonder Woman is one the best DCEU movies, because her story goes to point A to point B, with Diana learning and, in the end, growing as a character and a hero.

You wanna shoot the action scenes in a way, where you spread the civilian point of view around. Focusing on one random group of civilians for too long, just eats up valuable screen time, when you desperately need to be world-building.
RANT TIME: It's a Justice League movie where aliens are invading the planet. Why not throw in some cameos from other DC heroes or even villains, kicking some Parademon @$$ amongst the civilians?!   I think that's actually a killer idea for JL2. People would have been tripping over those cameos.
  I liked the Green Lantern cameo we got, though. Tastefully snuck in. Kinda similar. They had planned a little more GL for the ending too.
  What I really would have done for JL specifically is show more of the Atlanteans fighting the Parademons and include Aquaman's motivations and decision making. This could have beefed up Mera's cameo to be very memorable and striking, both in terms of her talking Arthur into doing the right thing even though he feels lost, but also in showing off her amazing, unique combat abilities.

        No little brain, my point was even though you were the insecure one in deleting your own dumb comments, not using real examples that actually define the true nature of Superman but superficial inconsequential ones you are still hung up on him smiling. He wore the costume in two sequences in the film, the first he was flying and having fun while the second he was being interrogated by the government and saving the world from aliens who wanted to destroy the world. Only an ass would focus on how many times Superman smiled while wearing his costume as a cornerstone for his argument and don’t forget how he smiled when he learned his name from his father, just imagine a guy who smiles around people he cares about, weird. Man you’re dumb and done!

        2 hours+ he only smiled according to you when he firstly got his suit and flew. The movie is depressing the whole time and had no happy moments. Don’t give me Lane or Mom to prove that he was happy. He wasn’t. The world isn’t just about his mom and Lane. He’s not alone in comics and doesn’t have identity crises this severe. If you listen to conversations they are depressing. His father telling him it’s a mistake that he saved those kids in the bus, like wtf, or when his father committed suicide to protect an identity which got exposed not long after. Why die for an identity that will eventually get exposed. The not ready bs. Fans go to the movies to see Superman not the not ready bs. When he was young he said he’s not ready, that’s logical as he was young. But 10 years later, all grown up and yet still not ready! He’s going to be Superman, the audience aren’t idiots. It was pathetic and a forced death. Then Supes completes it with “I’m no superhero”. If that’s your Superman then clearly you don’t know crap about him.
        The amount of destruction, the town was being torn down and not once he looked around and tried to help the civilians. He acted like they didn’t exist, patrol station explodes and yet he proceeds like nothing happened. He was a reckless and non caring idiot. They even made it clear in BvS, when Batman saved that young girl and that what motivated him to fight Supes lmao. And it started all this stupid Martha drama.

I don’t watch a movie and count smiles as a factor in what makes or breaks a movie great or not.         I never said that smiling was the answer. My first comment was about the admin twitter account talking about lack of smiles and clearly all that went over your dumbo head. It was a depressing movie, I made that clear. But you where too busy showing off a gif trying to be a smartass. Showing me a couple of seconds smile when it’s a 2 hours+ movie.

        I wanted him to be introduced, have some journey with him. There is still a lot of history and connection that needs to happen. It also gives Supes someone other than just Lane or his mom. Killing him off this quickly doesn’t do the character justice. I didn’t realize it was Jimmy until somebody told me, that’s how rushed it was.

        Ok, I understand that. I think you should be prepared to see a bunch of secondary characters (like Perry White/Steve Lombard) to die, because DCEU and MCU are team up oriented movies, so unless your character does not belong to a team or he/she is not really useful then he/she can "unpredictably" die. That's what Game of Thrones does with its characters.

You should read my first comment. And btw nobody counts smiles in movies, everybody focuses on what generally they have seen, which the movie clearly showed a lack of those happy moments. I can name you 40 depressing moments, which is terribly a lot for a Superman character, while you can’t even name me a relevant happy moment.

He did what he could with what he had. The Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon mishmash was doomed from the start. Contrast that with Solo (not a great film by any means), but that at least came out coherent and the only Ron Howard reshoot I could immediately spot was the Clint Howard cameo, and that's only because they are brothers and Clint shows up in his movies all the time.

  I think that was mostly because the reports say that Ron re-shot almost the entire movie. Paul Bettany was not originally cast as Dryden Vos but the actor who was initially filmed by Lord and Miller was not available for the re-shoots, so all of those scenes had to be re-shot. It's hard to pick out the re-shoots because Howard shot, essentially, a whole new movie. Whedon did almost the same thing but they kept so much of Snyder's action scenes you could see the difference in the basic filming techniques.

    Exactly. Lord and Miller reportedly finished about 85% of the movie before they were fired and as you can see in the credits, Ron Howard gets SOLE director's credit. He reshot the entire movie.

Joss won't even acknowledge his involvement with JL, but he was more then happy to accept a paycheck for a job he knew he didn't have the time to do properly. Which looks even worse considering the circumstances under which this all came to be. I'd understand if this was some "director for hire" in desperate need of a payday, but I expected more integrity from Joss.
