Marvel's 'Thor: Ragnarok' director pokes fun at 'Justice League' (video)

Marvel and DC Comics both have movies coming out in November. Marvel's Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3rd and DC's Justice League is out two weeks later on November 17th. They're essentially competing directly against each other, and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi just threw the first punch.

Waititi was participating in an IGN video where he was reading comments from the site. One user with the screen name "Bruce Wayne" said that Thor: Ragnarok "looks beyond stupid". That prompted Waititi to reply with, "Well, it is beyond stupid. And that's why it's the best movie of the year, and why we're going to take all of the money from Bruce Wayne." Reviews for Thor: Ragnarok came out this week, and it's currently at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. But this is Justice League, and even if it doesn't get critical acclaim, I doubt Thor's latest will be able to surpass Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg at the box office. Straight up called it out. Savage. I admit I chuckled, but it's also disappointing that it has to be this mob vs mob angry thing instead of us all just enjoying two great superhero movies.
The Batman fan in me was deeply triggered when he specified taking all the money from Bruce Wayne. lol
There's still a Thor fan in me too, though. So it's all love on this end. :)

Well, at least he admits Thor movies are stupid. But will Ragnarok beat Justice League? Not a snowball's chance in hell. And to be honest, I think directors need to stand by their work and not call it "stupid", it implies that you've been lazy and the movie doesn't matter.

  He's just admitting that this movie is made to be a comedy, and not the serious Thor movie that a lot of vocal Thor fans want and feel burned about.
  That's fair in my opinion, even though I'm one of those Thor fans that this film is catering away from.
  Unfortunately, the general audience speaks more loudly with their money, and they have to do what makes business sense. I think Thor has a cultural advantage over JL right now, even though I expect JL will be more my kind of movie, and perhaps a more meaningful movie.
  Average moviegoers feel like they can trust Marvel for a good popcorn-munching time, and rightly so. There's also a negative stigma against DC right now, as you know, and, dammit, they have a Hulk.
  I want JL to blow the box office out of orbit, but I won't be surprised if they don't make as much as Thor. It's just that kind of world right now.

    Not a chance Thor beats JL. To think so is a grand delusion. Even Spider-Man barely passed WW opening weekend when he's marvels no.1 plus he had iron man!! And WW's overall domestic gross crushed homecoming's numbers in the end lol. Thor plus hulk wouldn't even be a match for a solo Batman film. Batman plus 5 other heroes including WW who is the most popular cinematic superhero at the moment, equals r.i.p. thor

      I use to think like this, but after a movie with both Batman and Superman failed to even crack 1 billion I have my doubts. If it's great, sure it will probably win. If it's as divisive as Batman V Superman was, Thor takes it.

        You guys keep throwing up BvS, but if anything, JL will be riding the love and success of WW, not the negativity of BvS which is almost 2 yrs old. I know there's a lot of people obsessed with the idea of these films failing, but it's not gonna happen

      Possible, but too premature to write Thor’s obituary at this point.
      Plus, I think you’re minimizing the cast to two characters. Even if the Doctor Strange scenes haven’t gotten a lot of play, Loki is as much as solid MCU staple as Banner & Thor. And to some extent, each MCU move has the benefits of riding the coattails of the previous movies.

    When you think about it, Civil War was a pseudo-Avengers movie based on a highly praised comic that had a lot of people losing their minds, so there was a big hype engine there versus what one would expect from a Thor solo (which haven't been that vocally loved) with a Hulk cameo (when everyone wanted a solo with Ruffalo).
    I would say Civil War was fully equipped to pummel BvS given the circumstances. Especially with people being 'meh' about Snyder's vision from the get-go and wanting more Marvel-like movies than what we got with Man of Steel. There was a lot of stink about Doomsday just from the trailer reveal too. Many people seemed put off just going in.
    Thor on his own doesn't seem to generate a lot of vocal hype, so I can see why someone would assume JL would do better. But, saying that, the YouTube hits for Ragnarok seem to be ahead of JL's. That could partly be due to the weird, seemingly disorganized way WB uploads their trailers over multiple channels (and much later than unofficial channels post them). DC also has a rough reputation right now thanks to the pop culture response to BvS.
    TL;DR: You're right. I would sooner call JL the snowball.

      Civil War's success had very little to do with the "popular" comic book. They made a good movie that stands on it's own, for the most part. I even doubt that BvS's disappointment was a factor either. If anything, a bad prominent SH movie probably ends up staining all SH movies.

    Civil war may have beat bvs, but it failed it's own expectations considering it was essentially the next avengers film yet made waaaay less than age of ultron. Just the inclusion of spider-man finally existing in the mcu should have caused people to lose their minds yet it was lackluster. WW beating homecoming domestically proves that.

      Naaah; Civil War did fine. It was never sold as an Avengers film, but as a Captain America film, by which it did great. And Spiderman also did great for a film with heavy competition on release...

    All the pressure is on JL to not embarrass itself (at least in this category), by losing in Box office to a Thor movie, even a Thor/Hulk movie. All Thor has to do is do well, and even make it close, for it to "win."
    But it looks like Ragnarok is going to pull in the usual audience and then even people who normally don't see, or rarely see, SH movies.
    I'm looking forward to this "horse race."

  Actually, It all depends upon quality.If JL turns out to be awful like BvS then it will get screwed on second weekend.Having Batman, WW, Superman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg won't change anything.And, Yeah Thor might be able to surpass jl box office cause of stronger legs.Everything depends upon quality.

    I'll go see them both in theaters for sure, and I have no stake in either "winning" at the box office. But you're right - I don't think it's a given that Justice League will outgross Thor (currently at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes). Especially after BvS and Suicide Squad. I think it's going to need positive reviews.

    As sci fi fans, they'll probably see them both; it's the repeat viewings that are in question. People might only be willing to check one or two of these movies out again only if they enjoy it a lot.

    Well, I don't know. Thor might be a great Marvel-movie fans pleaser, but I don't think it has the reach a JL movie has. I'm not american, don't live in the US, but I think a random movie goer would be more inclined to watch JL than yet another Thor, no matter the reviews.
    Also, screw reviews. Most of the advanced reviews aren't even done by real critics, but by hyped fanboys. Read reviews by "Variety", or "The Guardian", and you'll see they are not saying this is a great movie, not by any means.

      How so? Thor at this point is probably more recognized by the general audience then Curray, Stone, & Allen. So the casual movie goer sees Affleck & Wonder Woman.
      Plus, there’s a lot of goodwill with the MCU at this point. I mean they turned the GotG movies into a solid franchise.
      I can’t say for certain Thor will top the JL, but I can’t write it off...yet.

    I liked the Watchman movie actually, but found the graphic novel to be very boring. I know the side story integrated with the main one at the end, but it just wasn't a worthy payoff for me. They wasted half the book on a message that he could've said in one line that would have had the same effect. And to be honest, I haven't seen Zach say his movies are the best ever or anything.

I look forward to Thor but I'm unreasonablely excited for justice league. Unfortunately I'm not everyone and I do worry about it's chances of reach the billion dollar club. And that will partly be because of Thor.

Taika Waitiki. He’s a great writer, director and actor. Regardless of what JL does. Thor 3 will be a box office smash. The only stupid person here is the user with the Wayne screen name. That was bound to trigger everyone on both sides.

Not sure how great or bad this film is because i will never go by what critics are saying. In saying that, has anyone watched the latest Thor clip online with Goldblum character talking to both Thor and Loki?
If that scene is any indication of the overall tone then this film is in trouble. It is absolutely horrible.
Marvel has and always will try and pour gas on the fire. Its just who they are.

      Hmm, yeah, I definitely don't want the whole movie to be like that, but I did think it was pretty funny. "Ass-place" got me, and I have a soft spot for Jeff Goldblum. :P lol
      If they just keep the humor balanced with the epic stuff as the focus, I'm all in. So far, it's looking more humor than epic though, but I have to remind myself that it could just be the focus of the advertising... am I kidding myself?
      I still want a mythical feeling Thor movie that is less Sci-Fi and draws more heavily in tone from Nordic legend, and big, iconic Thor books like, say, The God Butcher.

A movie with 'Ragnarok' in the title - that is essentially the fall of gods and the main villain is the goddess of death, with all its neongasm is the most fun Marvel film yet. Doesn't fit. I don't mind gotg being fun, but this thor movie should've been serious, especially after that dark button scene in Age of ultron. I blame Marvel for this 'superhero films must be fun, they're comics after all' notion. No one wanted fun superhero movies before MCU. Today, X-men franchise with all its movies and tv shows is the only one that's hitting different genre and nailing them.

        Again, they can’t do both? They can’t go to the midnight showing on the 16th/17th, then get home & watch the Punisher? OR they can’t watch the Punisher, then go see JL? It’s not like they have to pay to see the movie and pay (other then the normal monthly fee) to watch the Punisher.
        And if they do stay home Thursday and Friday, but see it Saturday or Sunday (which is actually the smarter move without the Punisher debuting), how does it effect ticket sales? They still bought a ticket.

        Ok, maybe you have no job or family or other responsibilities. But other people do. And often people have to choose how to spend their couple hours of free time in the evening.
        affect is a verb, effect is a noun.
        There's a complicated science in ticket sales. Simply put, the company gets the biggest percentage of the sales on the first day, then the percentage goes down. If you go see the movie a month after it has been released, the company hardly gets anything.
        There is also the matter of publicity. Making $80 thousand opening weekend is more impressive than making $60 thousand.

        Who cares about the complicated science of ticket sales; aside from the studio? Does the average moviegoer really care? Same with the publicity angle. On Monday morning are people saying “yup, I was apart of history this weekend. I saw a movie that was the current top opening day grosser.”
        Again, if someone works both into the same weekend or opening day, the ticket was still sold.

        And I still don’t get how it’s going to hinder ticket sales. If you see either one before the other, you’re still giving WB money at some point.
        If JL doesn’t reach its targeted weekend box office projection, I doubt a Netflix series is the primary reason.

Thor 3 is the most anticipated movie of the season, somehow (in a season that has both Justice League and Star Wars). I think it may get get a better box office than JL, because of the Marvel effect, but one can only hope.

        Thor will most likely be in the 800-900 million mark, Thor is fucking huge and it has Hulk in it as well. Thor The Dark World was in the 600 million mark so no way is the new one doing less expecailly when every Marvel sequel except AoU has done more then the previous one.

        I don't think a lot of people liked Dark World or the first Thor. The critics did but that's because there's nothing objectionable about them, they're just bland AF. At least they got rid of Portman
        You're right about Hulk being the thing that might make this earn more but I heard from a dude that went to a screening that you get very little Hulk time in this movie, a lot more Banner than Hulk and that they spoiled the ending in the trailers.

        i double checked. So the fandango poll puts Thor as the most anticipated, but for the season going from September to November, still beating JL. But not including Star Wars, because it comes out in December.
        I still have a better buzz from my friends for Justice League than Thor, but honestly, only time will tell.

  It looks like there's a lot of that, and while I have the same preference as you, the comedy at least seems mostly pretty funny, and, thankfully, character-driven.
  I've seen some pretty strong serious clips too, though. We'll have to see what the ratio of goof-to-epic is when the movie comes out...

  Not even waiting to see if the first showing was worth it? The last I made plans to see a movie multiple times in advanced (4 total), it was Batman & Robin. After the first viewing, I exited the theatre thinking “three more times of that crap?!”

What does it say for Waititi when Marvel doesn't have the confidence in him to write his own film. Instead they went to some Marvel in-house writer by the name of Eric Pearson.

        There's nothing wrong with set up. But we're not talking about a sequel or even a trilogies worth of set up. We're talking about 20 (or so) movies worth before IW.
        Life is short, and I want to see movies that tell a complete story from start to finish now; not 10 years from now. Sitting around for a decade waiting for 'Thanos' to finally show up --- I've been over it for a while now. I can only hope DC doesn't fall into the same trap.

        I get it. Not everyone has the patience for the payoff from a story years in the making. But frankly I'm glad Marvel went for it, because I doubt anybody else has, or will be able to do anything similar in scope. After Infinity War, we will never see a cinematic epic the same way again.

        It has nothing to do with patience. The problem is we're all basing this entirely on the idea of 'Thanos' and IW being great and having an amazing pay off.
        But what if 'Thanos' is just like every other Marvel villain, and what if IW equals even more set up just like all the others? Many fans are basing their opinions of these current films (in large part) on a movie they haven't seen yet.

        I enjoyed WW a lot and I can assure you it had nothing to do with BvS or JL or any other movie. It felt like a story that was self contained. But they still managed to have it exist in the same universe. I did how ever, have significant problems with both BvS & SS.
        IMO virtually all of the Marvel films feel like set ups for other movies. For me this is a problem because the hardest thing to do in story telling is come up with a solid pay off. This is something Marvel Studios has yet to manage properly.

        Sure. There’ve been comic book runs that take several years to finally payoff. If this was a tv show, it’d be one season. A comic book arc might run at least a year. Movies are going to be bigger & take longer.

    So did Waititi feed the actors their lines, or did they make them up? Because if Waititi rewrote the lines on set, shouldn't he get some sort of writers credit for either story or screen play? 80% is a lot --- but they're not giving him credit. All good questions I suppose.

      I don’t believe Waititi gave them lines. Sounds more like they had a narrative, then just worked around the specific point of each scene. Similar to how Curb your Enthusiasm is made.

      I imagine it was a collaborative effort between Waititi and whoever was in the scene. Iron Man didn't have a finished script when it filmed - most of the dialogue was made up on set the day the scene was filmed.

Not saying it will but i do think Thor has a chance at beating JL, Thor is quite big now and so is Loki along with Hulk and people love this version of Hulk, marketing has also been more popular with the general audiances (although i've prefered JL's myself) then JL's has, the Marvel name itself is huge as well. JL looks good but despite what fanboys think BvS wasn't that well liked or popular, outside of comic book fans no one really gives a shit about Affleck's Batman (you ask the general fans who their favorite BM is and you will hear Adam West, Michael Keaton and of course Bale) and Cavil's Superman isn't that popular either, of course what JL does have is Wonder Woman and she's the DCEU golden child right now and the character people want to see more off so that will give it a major boost. Really the reviews and word of mouth will be the thing what i feel will really decide its fate, if it has that WW effect or something like that then yeah its beaten Thor however if its another BvS then it may very well not beat it.
Worth pointing out as well that once Star Wars is out then JL will stop earning money at cinema's, their a month apart sure but that means JL only has a month to do well before everyone but a select few stop giving a shit.

Wonder Woman’s Domestic Sales and BvS’ International Sales leads me to believe $925mil is a solid over/under estimate for JL... Thor’s great reviews and amazing looking CGI(Weta Digital is on fire right now) gives it a solid shot at $800-$850. Those will really be the only two movies in cinemas until Star Wars crushes all a month later, so plenty of seats to be filled in that time frame.

You know there is something terribly wrong with human civilization when the masses start to take fiction more seriously than reality as well as the very unimportant nonsense in between. It's difficult to fully get it when you're too close to see the overall picture but if you only take a few steps back it's amazing to see how ridiculous and juvenile-like people are with fictional movies. And remember, this could be said for Hulk too who is also in the movie. You can not downplay Thor. You can't. Thor is currently a very popular A-list superhero due to the Marvel Studios (a current pop culture of Pedowood-I-mean-Hollywood) brand elevating the character of Thor. Thor alone is better known than almost the entire JL. Thor has been in two of highest grossing films in cinema history. In Civil War he was noticeably absent leaving casuals to wonder. T:R will mark his first (minus Doc Strange) appearance since his last. People are anticipating Thor (who, may I reminder you, is just as popular as any Marvel and DC Comics hero now-& has been for the past decade).
      If Thor does better at the BO, it is understandable. The DC Films as of late, has been getting bad rep. Conflicting news. And their movies overall, by critics & absolutely haters (you're naive if don't think such a thing exist) too, bad word of mouth-... I mean, come on. You factor in everything, the fact that Thor seems more family friendly, like Shrek-friendly and all. You see JL trailers, it's a bit more serious, which one will the casual parent (who really doesn't care about superheroes) would go see with their families? Of course, more than likely the one that looks like a funny-family-friendly movie. Duh.
      The only way WB will panic is if JL doesn't make more than BvS. That's the only way. They can make 1 B and they'd be happy even if T:R makes 2 B. You understand? It doesn't matter what Thor makes. All that matters to them is how well JL performs. Not only that, but isn't Star Wars a show stopper? It's also family friendly and pop-culture. Come on, man...         You are seriously overestimating his popularity. No, Thor is not on the same level as Superman, Iron Man and Batman and if that was the case his movies would have done way better and his merchandise would have been through the roof. He appeared in the Avengers and that barely helped his sequel, he still remains one of the lowest grossing characters in the MCU(till Ragnarok of course).
        I agree that DC is more divisive at the moment but that is purely because of Warner. They gave the keys to the kingdom to a divisive director, so why do we act so surprised with the results? Why do you want the casual audience and critics to love these movies while you throw all your support behind one man that caters to a small hand? Family friendly also plays a very small role, The Dark Knight trilogy is one of the most successful trilogies of all time and you don't associate light and laughter with it, same with Logan or even Days of Future Past. Didn't it make almost the same as Guardians? I need to check the numbers.
        If people see Batman, that alone should already convince them to go watch Justice League.

I think we're underestimating Thor's chances in this matchup. I'll try to speak for/as the audience at large.
WB seems to have stepped back from putting Gal front and center in the JL marketing. (Even if her role wasn't actually elevated in reshoots, they're still free to mislead via advertising.) I suspect Ben's people got involved. Instead they're leaning into the team as a whole, with mixed results. The general audience doesn't know Cyborg and Ray Fisher is a complete unknown: tough combination. Ezra is polarizing.
The JL trailers have looked great but I don't think average moviegoers are intrigued--at all--by the story. Step outside your DC fan body and face it: the movie looks like the Justice League vs. alien insect robots. Steppenwolf is barely seen--not that normies even know who he is. Perhaps for the best, since he's just CG. There's a great actor 'playing' him, whose face audiences definitely know, but he was never even on set.
The Ragnarok marketing, on the other hand, pits three very well established characters against two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, who looks like she's having a blast. The pitch is so much cleaner and clearer.
OK, now I'm worried.

  Audiences are seeing the league go to war, and it looks like the Amazons are getting in on the action as well. Aquaman far interesting than what he's been presented as in the past. Batfleck is back to break bones. And no one knows who Ultron was, and yet audiences were still sold on him. You can argue that audiences don't know most of the MCU villains, but they still went to see the films. It's the same with other CBM films.

    True, audiences don't know who Hela is, but Cate Blanchett is playing her. They didn't know Ultron, but the trailers showed the Avengers up against a menacing robot with a familiar voice. That's *something*.
    In the JL trailers Steppenwolf is never seen and heard at the same time. Audiences have to connect an ominous voice with a barely-glimpsed figure. So it's the JL vs. alien insect robots led by Mysterious Bad Guy.

        If Ciaran Hinds (whom audience would recognize from GoT and plenty of movies) were playing Steppenwolf in person I wouldn't have these reservations. Or if we actually saw the CG version while hearing his voice. Instead we see his knee when he lands, and we see him dropping from the sky, and a peek at his face when he's fighting WW, but he's never shown speaking. It's hard to connect to a villain that way.

  These are all excellent points that I agree with completely... I do feel like the momentum off WW after owning the month of June in domestic sales, along with the strong diversity within the League members will help it’s Box Office. Suicide Squad limped to $730 without a China release that netted BvS $90 of its $873 total, and it wasn’t because of the script or reviews. The diversity of SS definitely played a role in its success. If an all WASP team movie like Avengers can get $1.5 Billion, I believe this diverse JL with a Strong Female lead fresh off a great Summer showing can get to $925 with ease.

      African American, Samoan American, Israeli National, Homosexual Jewish Millenial, two British Actors and one Ben Affleck give the JL a more diverse group that appeals to a wider demographic.
      SS was a bunch of B and C list comic book characters, but had diversity in the cast to help last long in theaters despite terrible reviews.

        Aside from Fisher, who knows any of that besides people who frequent websites such as this one? I’m not certain this will be that huge a factor. I don’t recall anyone talking about it for Suicide Squad.
        How many people in the general audience are really going to decide to see this movie because one actor describes himself as queer (his wording, not mine)? Or because he’s a millennial? Or another actor is from Northern Ireland? What does that say about the movie if THAT is the tipping point to see the movie? What does that say about the audience member who makes decisions based on that?
        If a diverse cast helped Suicide Squad, this cast looks less diverse.

        I feel like it helps in international markets as well as with fans of certain actors. I know Fisher is mostly unknown, but Ezra has been in several roles as well as Momoa who both have fan followings to some degree. Charlie Hunam is an example of this in international markets, and who I’d love to see show up as Green Arrow.
        I’m not saying diversity is a deciding factor for all moviegoers, just that it can clearly help, especially when associated with characters that date back decades but have not been seen on the big screen yet. Most of my non comic book reading friends are most excited for Black Panther over Thor and JL. They want to see a black hero in a star role, with a 90% black supporting cast and a popular black director. WW had the same effect on female moviegoers.

I’m a fan of Boseman, Jordan, & the director did a hell of a job with Creed. The trailers look head & shoulder better. Plus, there are new characters to see.

        Agreed. I was surprised with how great Creed was. The trailers did not do it justice. I think BP will be very good and do well in Box Office.
        But JL is something I’ve been waiting to see since childhood. Thor looks like tons of fun. So I can’t say BP would excite me more despite the great cast and crew behind it.

        I can’t remember being jazzed for the idea of a JL movie. Probably when there was a discussion of a Routh/Kent teaming with a Bale/Batman.
        I don’t care about Allen, Stone, or Curray. Surprisingly, I really only care about Diana & this version of Kent. Since BvS, I’ve stated I won’t see any of these movies in the theatre except the MoS sequel & WW movies. Nothing I’ve seen has changed that.
        I’m kind of losing the Jazz I had for the mcu. I think part of that is this year, so far, we had GotG vol. 2 & Homecoming. I’m not a GotG fan & Homecoming looked like Spidey, but didn’t feel like Spidey. I’m looking forward to Thor, but not as much as Black Panther.

        GotG Vol 2 impressed me with its CGI. Weta Digital is killing it and I can’t wait to see how Thor looks. The story for GotG was nothing special, but I’d still put it ahead of Antman and Dr Strange in entertainment value. I loved Homecoming and had a smile ear to ear the entire movie. It was the closest movie to resemble the Fox cartoon show I grew up watching. Maybe Nostalgia has an effect on me, but I love seeing childhood characters like Kent and Diana being represented well on screen. I thought Routh was ok, but finally seeing Superman throw a punch in MoS was refreshing. The scene where Jor-El basically tells Clark to be Superman and that he can save all of them is still my favorite line and scene from the DCEU. Hopefully he gets to shine in the sun with others in JL like his father promised.

  This was never going to be a WW movie, regardless of what these useless blogs and trades were writing. But let's not forget WB/DC is coming off of the huge success of WW. Perhaps a great many people are underestimating this factor as well.
  Thor tracking for a 90 mil opening weekend last I checked. They've got 2 weeks before JL hits, let's hope they make as much as they can.
