on Joss Whedon confirms he's doing 'Batgirl', talks casting

Variety caught up with Joss Whedon at the premiere of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tonight, and he confirmed that he's making Batgirl!

Whedon said he doesn't have anyone in mind of the role yet -- he's busy creating his version of the character -- working on the script. But it seems like Whedon isn't interested in casting a big movie star.

"I'm not against movie stars, they're great. But you need somebody who's going to be just right. In a situation like this, the name [Batgirl] carries a lot of weight, so it's not as critical", Whedon said. He then joked that it's definitely going to be Vin Diesel!

Anya Taylor-Joy(younger batgirl) might be a good choice, I loved her in The Witch and Split.

Or Anna Kendrik(an older batgirl). She also had good chemistry with Batfleck, as seen in The Accountant ! :)

P.S. By good chemistry, I am not trying to indicate potential romance like in Batman: The Killing Joke 2016 ! :D

My vote would go first to Sophie Turner (my crush from GoT), she isn't strange to cbms -although her commitment to X-Men could prevent her from taking this role- and IMO she is getting better as an actress as time passes.

If not, I would go for Scodelario. She seems to be doing good on Pirates of the Caribbean (we'll see once the movie is out) and if she can do that mixed role of adventure/action and comedy then she could be a fit for Batgirl (and those eyes...)

Woodley I don't feel it and she isn't exactle a box office darling. Can't comment on Levy, and Stewart... let's just say better not ;-p

      My two cents, anyway ;)

    2. Seb Avatar
      Seb

Sophie Turner... I still don't get why people like her. I don't think she's a good actress, and she's way too young anyway. Besides, she's already committed to Fox.
Shainley is talented, probably the best actress on your list. I'd be happy with her. Levy is my personal fan fav pick though. She's got everything: the looks, the talent, the age, people also don't really know her name which is an advantage in this case.
And lastly, Stewart is improving as an actress... But I don't think she's close to being decent, and I just can't take that boring face seriously :p

Shazam, Cyborg, Green Lantern, Man of Steel 2, JL 2, Flash, Batman, SS2, GCS, Black Adam, Nightwing, Batgirl

That is 12 movies! With probably 2 more batman movies coming. if they do 2 a year we will see 6 years until Justice League 2...

Some of these are getting scrapped. Good luck DCEU you have almost no plan.

      1. Seb Avatar
        Seb

I have to say, I do somewhat agree with you... But if JL 1 does well (both critically and financially) then I have no doubt they'll make a sequel by 2020. A 3 year gap is acceptable I think. And if I'd have to put money on it, I don't think a Cyborg movie will ever happen. The character himself is just not that compelling and I don't think people will care. MoS 2 is probably not anywhere close in sight, unfortunately (they should have made that 2018 release. Would have been perfect). Flash, never gonna happen... SS2 can wait. But again, it does feel like they're announcing movies for the sake of it. I mean, they still have a "Deadshot" movie in the works, as well as Dark Universe and whatnot. I'd rather they focus on their existing line-up, as much as I am looking forward to Batgirl and Nightwing... These movies aren't really necessary, unlike Flash, MoS0, the Batman, WW and Aquaman sequels, etc.

        1. Kerk Lastnameless Avatar
          Kerk Lastnameless

They'll make a sequel no matter what. It's JL. They can't afford not to contunue the story. But it won't do well. The hype is lukwarm, and it's sandwitched in between Thor and Star Wars. General audience will spend money on more colorful, fun, and safe options.

            Sebreplying to Kerk Lastnameless

Yeah, it pains me to say it, but after BvS, I don't think JL will do that well. If the reception is "meh", I wouldn't be surprised it grosses less than BvS.

      2. Ezee23 Avatar
        Ezee23

Whats wrong with making Justice League 2 the third movie in 2019? Marvel are going to 3 movies a year so it's not beyond imagining that DC could do the same.

This doesn't seem that complicated actually.

        1. K Ujayhawks Avatar
          K Ujayhawks

Marvel is well established. It took years of planning to do their movies and studio.

          1. Ezee23 Avatar
            Ezee23replying to K Ujayhawks

Okay... that still doesn't explain why DC can't do 3 movies from 2019/20 onwards. The number of movies Marvel make a year does not need expert planning to accomplish. Warner Bros. have been making movies for a very long time, with their immense resources I'm sure they can figure out how many movies a year they need to make.

DC released two last year, are releasing two this year and maybe two next year... this probably means they're doing three or four movies between each Justice League movie. Seems logical a plan to me.

          2. K Ujayhawks Avatar
            K Ujayhawksreplying to Ezee23

i hope they can, i just don't know if Warner Brothers will commit that much to one film division. DCEU needs to build first.

      3. Mark Avatar

Hopefully they'll give us a revised schedule at SDCC. As the guy below mentioned, you left off Dark Universe, and there's also Lobo that's in early development.

The original plan, as I see it, was to set up the Trinity, do JL 1 (which we're getting), then do Flash, Aquaman, and Shazam leading into JL Part 2, and then follow up with Cyborg and GLC with a couple of extra slots available to capitalize on whatever stuck. The combination of lackluster critical support for what they tried to do in BvS and the backstage shuffle on The Flash have thrown that through-line into doubt (sadly), but I do believe that they had intended all along that other movies could come in like feathers attached to the mainstem. That's what the others are.

        1. K Ujayhawks Avatar
          K Ujayhawks

They need to not give us any revisions. They will only break them. Just announce 1 or 2 new movies and deliver on them

1: Because Batman is now tied up in whatever Reeves' vision is. Remember that "solo Batman" wasn't even on the original schedule.

I love Batman and I'm a huge fan of him but I'm glad they are doing a Batgirl movie. We've never gotten one but we will always get Batman movies. Batman and Superman are mainstays. Batgirl isn't and the opportunity to get a movie about her is always welcome. I do agree with your idea of there being a lot of stories to tell about Batman though.

      1. Az Avatar

i know, all i'm saying is that if it is damaging the production of the Batman movie, it shouldn't exist (not now). also if they are going to make a movie about batgirl, making her a badass by dumbing down batman's character (considering the directors back record and social life) they should be stopped. you see if this was directed by someone else, i wouldn't have complained, but Joss Whedon is the type of agenda driven directors (who ruin franchises i.e. age of ultron) who will direct this movie for the sole reason of making a movie with a "female" lead, with no respect to either batman or Barbara, stomping over batman in attempts to further push batgirl in batman's myth
