Joe Manganiello says 'The Batman' starts shooting in the spring

Entertainment Tonight caught up with Joe Manganiello at Mohegan Sun's 20th anniversary party this past weekend. Manganiello, who stars as the villain Deathstroke in The Batman, revealed when the movie starts shooting... and it's sooner than we thought!

ET asked Manganiello how he was doing, and he replied "Great, man, just getting ready to go shoot Batman in the spring."

While promoting The Accountant, Ben Affleck implied that The Batman was further off than most fans were expecting, but Manganiello just spilled the beans!

Spring could mean The Batman starts shooting in March, April, or May of next year. And with that kind of start date, I think that empty Fall 2018 release date is extremely likely. Currently there's an untitled DC Comics movie dated for October 5, 2018.

    Well see here the thing...the only DC movie that actually had a rushed production was Suicide Squad(and it showed). BvS wasn't rushed. They spent several years crafting that movie and to me it is clear that a tremendous amount of thought was put into it. Some people just didn't like some of the decisions they made

      I actually liked BVS but recognized that some of the decisions in that film were not that well thought out. I did like the bold style but the premise was very much rushed. Zak came up with the idea very shortly before he announced the movie. The movie was good but it needed more film to set up the characters.
      Suicide squad? that pile of crap made me so angry i don't know where to begin.

    Sorry for going on topic but damn, imagine a Star Wars Story film either set during the PT or before it. The technology nowadays is far beyond that what was accomplished in the PT. Yes I say accomplished because it were the first films that heavily relied on VFX but they finally started to get the hand of it in Revenge of the Sith. It still looks good today which is quite a feat.
    Not just for the VFX and the look of the film would I love a Star Wars Story set during or before PT, storywise it can be original and a different setting than just before ANH or the new Episodes would be a nice change. Btw, Rogue One looks gorgeous, I love that they're more free when it comes to cinematography and direction for the Star Wars Story films. Really hope Lord & Miller shoot their Han Solo film with the Alexa 65 as well. Hell, I think all spins offs should be shot with that camera and the Episodes on film like happens now.

Chris Batman-News is going to be covering info on a solo Batman movie for the first time in about 4 years or so! I love all the other DC movies that are happening but it'll be pretty cool to see this site in all it's Batman glory again haha feels a little nostalgic

    I commented right when you did. That's a great point too. He's in charge of Batman now. He takes his personal projects (writing and directing and acting) very seriously.
    And if anyone is curious, check out the handful of movies he's done where he's had much more creative control. He don't fuck around with those!

  No. He's on a different Hollywood list than some of the others. I've noticed that Aquaman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg, and now Deathstroke seem so damn genuinely excited to be a part of this. Whereas Affleck has been through the Daredevil movie. Don't get me wrong, his Batman is my absolute favorite, and I can guarantee you he's really enjoying it. But he seems much more (negatively) experienced, and that could contribute to anything media-related.

        There was a recent interview that his PR team tried to have edited because he mentioned casual drug use. He's become somewhat of an image-marionette since starting the Batman gig. The creepers in the shadows are trying to make sure he doesn't use too many words; or the wrong words. :)

        My takeaway from that comment was that they might not have committed the funding yet, so he's downplaying things until it's locked.

  He has been like that because he has other films coming earluer and he has to promote those, and he may feel annoyed by the fact that in every interview, about The Accountant and Live By Night he is constantly asked about The Batman instead of the movie he is promoting at the time.

    Michael Uslan is still "executive" producing EVERY Batman film there is (due to his 89 contract), as that title is 100% meaningless. Affleck´s title on JLA though has a function. It´s to set up his films properly. Continuity / characterization, all that fun stuff, but it´s still only a small function. (He went over it in the set visits.)

    Oh, I don't know if she will be in the movie, but I'm hoping. I agree with you, she's a classic anti-hero and also a potential romantic interest. There are rumors going on for a while about Catwoman being in the film, but nothing consistent. Considering how Geoff Johns is one of the writers, along with Affleck, I think chances are good we'll see Selina Kyle at some point (Johns usually writes Catwoman as Batman's main love interest).

Why isn´t the man himself talking about or even downplaying "his" film (series)?
Affleck just shot JLA and some form of extra work will undoubted still be done. He was also promoting The Accountant at the same time and he is also post-producing his own Live by Night. He also needs to sleep and he has a family... Batfleck Begins could still come in 2018 (i can wait, there is hardly a Bat-drought right now) and he will have a sizable role in the production but i can guarantee you he won´t have Orson Welles levels of control in the end, no matter how anyone will spin the current situation.
Not "even" Nolan had that but i don´t doubt Affleck either. He will be the first (life action) Batman director who is an actual comic reader. That alone is interesting and his The Town also shows great crime-movie skills.
PS: My money is on 2019 but i wonder how far along MoS 2 is, Superman´s series has way more set-up.

    Kevin Tsujihara is a decent CEO first of all. It´s his non-DC work as Pan that needs to be
    criticized, and who knows how far along the script is. It was already being written a year ago, it should be fine by now. Weird Science was written in 2 days for example and some of the biggest albums ever are borderline "rush jobs". This can´t be the main problem.
    I more suspect that time tables need to line up before and Batfleck will have stared in 2 films by then too, so Ben is being "used" in the meantime. It thus makes no sense to run PR for a film that still only exist on paper and elements will also be seen in JLA.

Its most definitely going to be October 5th 2018 if they're starting to shoot in spring 2017. I honestly don't see why people are convinced or even highly skeptical of the film *not* making that date.

  I am frankly most exited about Aquaman from that lineup. That and Wonder Woman are something reasonably "new" on the big budget superhero scene. I saw great Batman films and a good Flash show before after all. James Wan, i believe in you!

    Certainly! Really looking forward to Wonder Woman, love the WWI setting and how good everything looks so far.
    Aquaman has probably got the most potential even on just a visual level. I love that Wan is the director, especially with his rather stellar if not great horror background. Bring us the trench please!

Please get Richardson as the cinematographer! Live By Night looks absolutely STUNNING if he gets him I wouldn't even mind if the film was shot entirely with Alexa 65 cameras. Though I have a feeling Affleck would rather use 35mm and perhaps even 65mm or IMAX. Would be very much appreciated and insane

Is it actually important to get the film out of the door in 2018 and not 2019? It would be his 3rd DC starring vehicle in 3 years! I would frankly prefer a "break". Keep the public hungry and all of that and this universe will more importantly need to function outside of the Bat.
JLA 2´s place in 2019 speaks against the "break" though.

To post something productive: Larry Fong won´t do JLA due to Kong (his "replacement" is also A-level) but this analysis shows off and honors his work rather well. Keep thinking about what you already got before hyping yourself for a film with no current release date.

        Hardhome yes, Battle of the Bastards though "only" looked good. The show is still good but it jumped the shark in S05. Just read the books, the amount of character HBO fucked up by now is staggering. Even GRR complained a bit... but he hasn´t been a writer for these 2 seasons too. The show mostly overtook the books in S06 btw. if i forger the high amount of changes and missing pieces.

        Well, I haven't read the books yet, so I can't discuss with you a lot there, but I will say that I really liked Battle of bastards, because, yes it looked incredibly good, but also because it started to close plots. I mean, at this time of the series, I was starting to think that they needed to start closing stories because if not the end of this series could be extremelly bloated. Glad that they started it.

I just need a release date
Depending how big this movie is i kinda doubt it will be ready a year and a bit after shooting especially if they start say May 2017 i suspect a spring 2019 release date unless things go super smooth in shooting and editing

Soooo, it looks like Deathstroke will be getting recast. I wonder who Affleck's #2 choice was? LOL Assuming that doesn't happen, I'm glad Manganiello spilled the beans. And he's right, Anna Kendrick would make an awesome Robin. I guess casting news will hit sometime in January or February-ish. Can't wait!

I think Affleck down plays things so the entire interview doesn't end up being what is the Batman movie about, casting choices, etc. I mean they will still ask questions but easier to end things by saying "we haven't finished the script yet." if he said yeah we are shooting in the spring. No one would be asking about The Accountant.
