'Suicide Squad' is #1 at the box office again, but there's bad news too

Suicide Squad was #1 at the box office again this weekend, bringing in another $43.8 million to bring its total domestic gross to $222.9 million. The movie has also made $242.5 million overseas which brings its total worldwide box office number to $465.4 million. Not bad for a week at the box office! It's not all good news, however...

Suicide Squad's domestic box office dropped 67% this weekend, which brings it incredibly close to Batman v Superman's record breaking 69% drop for a superhero movie. Those aren't the kind of records you want to set.

There could be various reasons for the big drop. For one, Pete's Dragon and Sausage Party opened this weekend -- two critically acclaimed movies -- so audiences could have checked those out instead. People also could have decided to stay in and watch the Olympics. It's also possible that the bad reviews are catching up with Suicide Squad, and that the word of mouth from fans isn't as strong as some assumed.

As I mentioned in my review on the Batman News podcast, I thought that Suicide Squad was a blast and I've been recommending it to everyone I know. It'll be interesting to see if it hits that $750 million mark that Warner Bros. is hoping for.

  That film made 872 million world wide and probably would have been declare a success if DC didn't go around telling everyone it would make more than a billion dollars before it was released. This film is on a slightly more favourable trajectory, it fall off being slightly less than BvS but being release at a slightly less favourable time of year.

None of the tentpoles have had legs this summer. That's point 1.
Second, I'm wondering if a lot of second - week and beyond purchases are families with kids, and neither of the DC movies this summer has really been friendly to the under-12 crowd.
Third, look for it to drop even more next week as Ben-Hur takes over the IMAX screens.

$750-800 million seem like the ego numbers, not the actual total it needs to make a profit. Reported numbers are:
Budget $175 million
Reshoots- $10 million
Marketing- $100 million
Studios get roughly 55% of the grosses back with the rest going to the theater chains. $570-$600 million seems like the actual safe zone, which it should hit within a week or two.
Oh wow it only made a $20 million profit, not a 200 one? Man I wish I had your problems.

  That's what's bugged me the whole time with this $750 BS.
  Man of Steel, which grossed $668m world wide, made a profit of $40m something. That's what it made in ticket sales, for WB. That's pretty standard. That was on a $225m budget with a possible marketing budget somewhere near $150m.
  So you're telling me a movie that cost less ($175m, and that budget includes the reshoots, because reshoots and pickups are scheduled long before shooting begins) with a $100m dollar marketing budget somehow needs to make a higher WW box office total than a movie that cost more, both in terms of marketing a production? Yeah, I'm not buying it.
  Besides, none of this considers the promotional tie-ins and DVD, Blu Ray, and Digital sales, which is where studios make their real money. All of that is pure profit. So whatever SS's marketing was, I'm sure it made it back in all of that promoting tie-in money.
  And another point, studios often inflate their budgets to make the profit seem less, for tax purposes. (How they get away with that is anyone's guess.)

    As Mark Hughes points out in that recent post, a lot of that marketing and promotion budget they pay back to themselves (something like a "Warner Bros. Marketing, LLC" subdivision which is, technically and legally, a separate company). Same goes for "distribution costs". Hollywood has been coming up with fantastical financial games for generations, not just to avoid taxes but to make sure that no one (actors) with back-end points ("x% of the net") ever gets any money.

      That's Marvel locks down their actors now, because they flubbed with Downey. All the money he makes off of those movies comes from the back-end. A part of the gross. So he actually does have an interest in the films, at least the ones he's in, doing well.

if there was really a bad word of mouth then the movie would never get passed 450m,I mean who cared and knew about the suicide squad before from the average audience to go check it out just cause of the hype?this movie isn't BvS so common people didn't really care about it,to make it fly to 870m no matter the reiviews or the bad word of mouth.Now that movie is definately not the "best movie ever" or any kind of gamechanger but it is fun enough for the audiences to have some good time,so my guess is that this movie would end up around 650m.750m was unrealistic expectations from the start but it shows you the true shitty attitude that WB has with the DC movies,trying to compete with marvel's Guardians of the galaxy instead of trying to do their best.But all these is just my opinion.

  It's the marketing teams job to get people to see the movie, it is not there job to summarize the story. Their are lots of trailers for movies that tease audiences and make them think certain things happen that don't actually happen. I'd rather watch a trailer that gets me hyped for a movie than a trailer that tells me what's gonna happen. It's also fun to see a trailer that makes it seem like someone is about to die but in the actual movie it wasn't as serious as the trailer made it out to be. It's called good marketing.

This is the modern day age of the 'box office'. Marketing.. marketing and more marketing! Brilliantly thought out 'fansites' like batman-news.com only add to the hype train of below average comic book films these days. I think for the advancement of the film indstry, this is a step backwards

I literally called this in one of the past Articles and predicted that it would drop 67%... Hopefully it will reach 750. As of right now I feel like it would reach 650 at least

    Actually, it only needs to make a little over $500m to break even. $550, we'll say. Studio wants $600m because that's all profit. That's not including the promo tie in money they probably got off of it. That paid for the marketing alone.

i watched it yesterday and it was horrible
the movie crashed with helicopter itself
after that scene it was so difficult to watch it
and no i dont think any amount of joker scenes could have changed the movie because the story sucked big time

  There is no way in HELL those bad guys were "the worst from the worst", maybe Harley but they didn't show how lunatic she was.
  WB tried to be too PC and fell flat... you don't really feel them as bad guys.
  They didn't even show Joker and Harley abuse relationship...

  They reminded us 4 TIMES that theyre the bad guys. They fought a goo army. 3 helicopters crashed. There was no character arcs outside of diablo a little bit. And the 3rd act was a mess. I had high expectations and was supremely disappointed. It would have been so much better if they just turned Assault on Arkham into a live action movie. A super villain heist movie? Would have been dope. But instead we got the same generic plot and a blue light in the sky. Man I was mad at this movie.

Honestly i've gotten to the point were it would be nice if box office scores rotten tomatoes metacritic every number based ratings system online regarding TV shows Movies Video games etc would go away people get so caught up with these numbers following them because they can't form their own opinion about something so they latch on to whatever is making money whatever is getting the ratings and so on
Also i think i'm done commenting on anything DC related because there's very little sensible conversations and discussions to be had when it all becomes one big troll fest with people driven to make sure you know that your opinion is somehow wrong based on the previously stated in the above paragraph i'll enjoy what i want to enjoy and move on from the shit show that is every single DC related article regardless of the website it's all the same shit show

  People use numbers because it's the easiest way to express the quality of a movie without going into the details, which are not necessary all the time. However, if you need a more thorough explanation of why a movie is considered bad, there's always the full review links. Plenty of articles detail why Suicide Squad was horrible.

  The people on RT and Metacritic are just giving their opinions just like anyone else does. It's not their faults that people obsess over them and wanting to shut them down for that is in itself immature. And keeping box office numbers public is for business and stock purposes, keeping that information away from their shareholders as well as their rival companies is a recipe for disaster.

  First of all Marvel has one great movie which doesn't even get the credit from the fanboys and that's Winter Soldier. Every other movie is mediocre at best with the exception of Iron Man 1 good movie. Nothing else they've made is good to great and please do not say Avengers 1 that is the most overrated movie I've ever seen with the absolute worst villain the chitauri! Lmfao. Btw I agree about Suicide Squad it was okay at best not good or great either. Also I was blowing up Winter Soldier before it was the cool thing to do. Have had conversations with fanboys who could care less about it until last year then all of a sudden everyone loved it. Winter Soldier is marvel only 9/10 movie.

      I loved the Incredible Hulk. For me it's actually the 5th best movie in the MCU. Very underrated and forgotten, just like Iron Man 1, even though it's the only movie that showed the Hulk legitimately being a threat rather than a fun source of comedy.
      Winter Soldier is also my favourite Marvel film next to Guardians of the Galaxy.

      Let's be honest. Critics are full of shit when it comes to CBMs these days because even if the flaws of Suicide Squad are justified, it's no worse a movie than Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron, Thor...
      I just wish there was more consistency. Suicide Squad had a "bad villain" and "paper-thin characters" according to critics. Okay, cool. Where are those criticisms for 70% of the Marvel films?
      Otherwise, my biggest issues with Suicide Squad was all the content that was cut from the trailers, and the lack of Joker screen time. It's madness that I can walk away from a movie with the Joker in it and not know if I love the take on the character or not because there just wasn't enough.
      Harley was perfect though - I'm a huge fan of the character and knew Margot Robbie would kill it the moment she was cast. All in all enjoyed the movie, but my favourite DCEU movies is still BvS Ultimate first, Man of Steel second.

        My three favourite CBMs are actually 1) The Dark Knight, 2) Watchmen Ultimate, 3) BvS Ultimate. Deadpool, Winter Soldier, Guardians, Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1, Days of Future Past, First Class etc come after that.
        I've also revisited Man of Steel, Watchmen, The Dark Knight and BvS UE more than any other CBM. I genuinely liked Man of Steel more with subsequent viewings, because prior to that movie I never connected with Superman or found his character compelling. Post Man of Steel I became very engrossed in his character through the Injustice Comics, strangely enough. I love seeing Superman challenged, and more than just a 'boy scout'. Struggling to find his place in the world in Man of Steel, and struggling to be the boy scout in a cynical world of BvS (that mimics our world in a lot of ways with regards to the media) really made me enjoy that take on the character.
        TDK trilogy is elevated by The Dark Knight, which is more than a comic book movie, it's a crime epic that just happens to have comic characters in it. A flawless film.
        However aside from Tom Hardy's absolutely brilliant Bane performance, and the opening of The Dark Knight Rises it's mostly a disappointing film, while Batman Begins is still a great homage to Year One. Honestly Christopher Nolan missed a lot of the core traits of Batman: the detective side, the ruthlessness, the fighting prowess, the fear he instils in criminals, the self destructive side, the obsession (he presented it as a man who struggled to move on from pain rather than a man who *can't* move on from darkness, that night his parents were murdered) and other things which make it hard for me to keep revisiting now that I've seen the Batman I've wanted on screen for most of my life (minus the straight murdering aspect in the Batmobile car chase scene, which I disliked).
        That said, I will always love Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, the latter being a perfect film and more than a CBM.

It was a mediocre summer for blockbusters and since Suicide Squad has Batman,Joker and Harley in it,then it's bound to bring people to theaters.Then there's Will Smith,who's got a lot of star power as well,so people are going out of curiosity at the moment.
Numbers are bound to drop fast in the following weeks because the film doesn't have much rewatchability value.The story is just too simple and the action is at best mediocre,but the only thing that makes it mildly enjoyable is the interaction between some of the characters,although they could and should have been better.
I was actually shocked that the action scenes were so confusingly filmed and uninteresting to watch considering how high the bar for action was set during the last 3 years.

        I believe they don't. It's just an assumption people make to downplay the BO result of a movie. I mean, Deadpool 'apparently' spent so much less on marketing but SS didn't, while it had the most buzz online, a relatively much cheaper platform like you said.

I think both DC and Marvel/DIsney fans need time to accept that new approach of making super hero (or vilain) movies à la WB/Snyder !
Still, I'm waiting for a new comer in the person of Valiant Comics, wonder if that Bloodshot movie will be up the challenge !

    Validation is more important apparently in this generation I guess. I'm 35 and honesty didn't get REALLY into this stuff until TDK trilogy. I was always a fan of Star Wars, played video games, but never picked up a comic book consistently until the new 52. It just seems like when I was younger, fans of this culture could give a f*ck less what the mainstream thought. I was never part of it too heavy as a kid but I wasn't necessarily one of the cool jock kids either. But at that time, all of this stuff was very "uncool" or "popular". Things are very different nowadays.

As long as I get more Harley I'm as happy as a kite. Ive seen it 4 times already but I cant watch it more cause I'm gonna end up broke. The movie is already a success so for those of us who loved or liked it we will get more, for those that didn't well cover your eyes and ears :)

  I've seen almost all the Marvel movies in a theater, but I've only seen 1-2 of them more than once(Avengers, Winter Soldier) and don't feel the need to ever watch them again or talk about them. It's like candy: delicious while you're consuming it but little long-term nutrition.

      I kind of agree about the stakes thing. I never feel like there are ever any real consequences in a Marvel movie because they can't afford to offend the audience too bad so the stories intentionally avoid anything that might be controversial.

        I really like that scene in Fantasia, Night on Bald Mountain, where that huge demon rises from the mountain and haunts the town below. Truly horrifying stuff, especially for the 1930s.

    For some strange reason, I don't watch the MCU movies as much as I do the DCEU...I've watched MOS and BVS more times than I'd like to admit.

        No, you're not crazy. I really like them, especially the Ultimate Cut of BvS. They're really good films. And I can't lie to myself about movies I don't like. I hated Superman Returns. I hated Green Lantern even though Hal Jordan is my favorite comic book character. I generally disliked the Matrix sequels even though I loved the first one. I disliked the Star Wars prequels.

        Tbh I'm not a fan of the Force Awakens, but it is light years ahead of the prequels as far as quality. Speaking about DC movies, the scene with joker and Harley dancing had me smiling ear to ear

        Oh, Force Awakens was an actual movie compared to the prequels. They were toy commercials. I'm not even a massive SW superfan but TFA was pretty good.
        The Harley/Joker dancing scene was plucked straight from that Alex Ross painting. There's a moment where, if you freeze frame it, Margot Robbie is posed so PERFECTLY to match Harley in that painting that you could've sworn that Ross used the image as photo reference for the art.

  I like these movies just fine, but stop pretending they are eye brow entertainment. They're not, not since Nolan stepped down. These are popcorn movies with little substance. They need talent for that kind of thing, and they apparently refuse to get it.

    Dude, what is wrong with your head? I never said this DC movies are in the same class as Inception. You know how many Easter eggs and references from the classical comics? A lot. There are also some biblical quotes, american political paradigms, Its thrilling and fresh for a superheroes movies. I like it grim, i like it dark. Who said I was looking for some eye brow entertainment? It's different, fresh. But surely still a better movies than Age of Ultron

      Yeah, these movies have focused more on easter eggs and refferences than quality, that's for sure. The writing, though, has been a mess. Age of Ultron was nothing special, but what it did, it did much better than Suicide Squad did.

Chris... it is a bad film man, the critics doesn't have nothing to do with the box office, I was one that wanted to watch the film so bad that even when the critics came out with the bad news I could not believe it. Less after watching good films as fury and training day. millions of people don't read reviews. I think people is coming out dissapointed and they are spreading the word.
Tsujijara will have to say goodbye I see it comming. a major shake up it´s going to happen. the real tension wasn't for bvs but fo suicide squad.
they spend a lot of money in marketing and extra shoooting. they sell us a trailer and lot of lies.

critics tried really hard to pull movie down. if you are a neutral person all the excessive negativity will put you off. wb said bvs gave them among the highest repeat business ever but the issue was getting the neutrals who you need to hit the upper end of expectations.
excessive smear campaign hurts movie.
I enjoyed it but understand it had faults. would love to see a sequel with deathstroke

I think it should be able to make the $750 million mark. Also, it probably made a lot of money of the merchandise as well, on top of that the blu-ray sales will help as well. BvS has been #1 for at least three weeks in a role in home sales, I think it made some nice money lol
Also, fingers crossed the sequel will be Gotham Sirens with Harley in the lead (alongside her Puddin' but with a larger role for Leto this time lol) and of course Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Throw in the remaining characters of Suicide Squad and lets go. No earth destruction threat now please, just crazy people

  Well, these movies end up making a lot of money with merchandise and stuff, but the box office is the best indicator of interest and whatnot.
  Also, fuck that idea in the ear. Either have Joker in a solo movie for him, or in a solo Batman movie.

      The joker-harley relationship was already shitty enough in Suicide Squad... Having him be in a movie crowded mostly by women, with him being alongside Harley, would be a disaster. Much rather have him in any of the two I mentioned...

      Even if they continue to do they probably will still be in the top 10 easily, probably the top 5,
      660 for Man of Steel
      872 for Batman vs Superman
      700 for Suicide,
      which is a 744 average.
      If the other 6 films average that, that would be 4.464bn + 2232 = 6696 which would place it in the top 5 all time franchises.
      It going to be hard to get any higher than that with James Bond, Marvel, Star Wars and Harry Potter are still pumping out films.

  You mean to tell me that a franchise with a huge pre built in fanbase, and two movies focusing on the biggest super hero icons of all time, in an era where comic book movies are the go to genre to make money, is making money at the box office?
  Either way, change that up to "most profitable franchises at the Box Office" and you'll see it drop like nobody's business.

  It will easily clear that in world wide box office, it already earned $465,374,728, It has at least another 100 million in it tanks, if it had a China release it probably make just below a billion dollars but it doesn't.
