Hans Zimmer: 'I have officially retired from the superhero business'

It doesn't sound like legendary music composer Hans Zimmer will be back for Justice League. "I have officially retired from the superhero business," he said in a new interview with BBC HARDtalk.

"This one was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language," Zimmer explained, speaking about his work on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. "I did Batman Begins with Chris [Nolan] 12 years ago, so The Dark Knight Trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life."

Leading up to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zimmer said he was taking a break to tour and do live music. But now it sounds like he's made the decision to walk away from superhero movies for good. Let's hope something happens to get Zimmer out of retirement for one last movie in the DC Extended Universe.

I completely understand what he's saying, but that doesn't make it hurt any less. Truly one of the greatest composers of all time.

Hans has done some amazing things for the superhero genre. Not only was the BvS soundtrack outstanding, but the themes for Wonder Woman and Superman are classic. His music will resonate for years to come with many of the other members of the Justice League having themes already written by Hans and Junkie.

      It feels like everybody is taking an emotional route on this one.. I agree to both points.. Zack definitely does a fantastic job in some areas and completely misses out on others.. It would be great if WB could bring in a co-director or a consultant to fill in the gaps that Zack misses out.. Instead of completely starting over with a new director and risking it all..

    While I wouldn't sign that petition because I'd never work to get someone fired I do think Snyder needs to be removed from directing duties, maybe not the DCEU altogether but definitely get him out of the directors chair.

      Okay I get your point but tell me one thing, if the movie was critically successful lets say BVS got 85% on rotten tomatoes, what do you think general people would have said? I'll tell you, they would still shit on Snyder saying that well the movie was great because it had oscar winner writer in Terrio and one of the best director in Affleck.
      Poor Snyder always get the blame, I mean give him a break!! I think all he needs right now is one critically acclaim movie!!!
      Not arguing here, just putting out the facts out here. I love Snyder, think that people should give him more credit than he deserves.

  Took him 11 years to score the Dark Knight Trilogy.
  And probably 5-6 more for Man of Steel and Batman v Superman.
  That's too much work and he sounds extremely exhausted in that interview.
  But of course... better blame "Hack" Snyder, because hater's logic.

      I took some time to look at your profile to your comments. I mainly see that you like to use quite a lot the word garbage and denial. I really feel you're hatred for Zack. I also saw that you really could not wait for the movie to come out and you were very existed for it. It is clear that the film is not made your expectations and you're a fan of DC. But you can not expect fans will continue to allow ramming the negativity in their throats. There are people who liked the movie. If anyone says against them "no open your eyes. You're blind. The movie sucked! You live in denial." They will not change their mind for it. It also makes people upset. If you are a passionate fan. Then you should also show respect to other fans. You'll have to live with it. The fact that there are people approve the film. That the movie does well at the box office. And Zack snyder is going to do justice league one and two. I respect your opinion. But your petition is useless. The film makes good money. The critics hate the movie. But the audience loves it. So little chance that Zack leave the ship.

      If you are a Batman fan how can you hate Snyder so much? He gave us a movie version of that character that many people think is the best yet. Even the critics, if nothing else, like this version of Batman.

  Batman v Superman was a great movie. It is one of the most ambitious films to hit the big screen. Zack Snyder is a fantastic director, however, after seeing the massive 19 signatures your “fire Zack Snyder” petition has racked up after being up for a week, I'm sure I'm in the minority on my opinion.

  2 years and 7 months ago a moron once thought as you do. He made a petition to remove Ben Affleck from playing Batman. Guess what happened?
  It got a few thousand signatures, President Obama probably saw it laughing hysterically, and the majority INGNORED it despite it being spread all over major sites. In the end, Ben Affleck proved to the entire world that he's a great Batman; and that petition served as the best example of why petitions made by butthurt "fan" boys are useless and a waste of time. It's almost amusing to see what lengths these so called "fans" will go to go to just because it didn't turn out like their wet-dream of them playing with toys. There are far more important topics in this world to write petitions about. Get out of your parent's basement and enjoy life for once.

I remember all those comments as well. But after the disastrous BvS, I can easily believe him now. It's one of his weakest scores yet and the movie turned out to be a pile of trash. Also he's great with geniuses like Nolan, but imagine him trying to have a conversation with the simpleton, Hack Snyder....yea.

  Nice. Wait for the directors cut and you'll see. WB cut Zack short which interrupted several scenes that needed to be fleshed out more. 2.5 hours was the theatrical cut because WB felt like they had to cater to the general audience who in this day and age have no patience or understanding of what makes a great film. I have a feeling this pissed Zack and comany off. But now WB is making their money and it will be considered a financial success. I feel like Zack is reading a bunch of reviews and comments on the Internet and is sitting in his chair angrily because he knows what this movie could have been had WB not told him to cut so much. There's a 6 hour version of this movie out there somewhere and nobody will ever see it because the audience is so dumbed down.

    Maybe he shouldn't have put a 3 hour movie script in the first place? Why bother to cram five movies of story into one when you know you're bad at storytelling and pacing in the first place? There should've been a movie in 2015 to set premises for BvS.

      Bad at storytelling.....I think the issue people have here is that it's his own story that him and others have written to fit this universe that is expanding rapidly. Keaton told his story, Nolan told his, and now Zack and co. are telling theirs. They can do whatever the hell they want with it. What they did was make one of, of not the most comic book translated into a film accurate story ever.

        Not much was at stake when Burton and Nolan were making movies. They didn't have the huge hype and expectations of a shared universe. This is a freaking huge Justice League universe to be expanded on and WB is placing all their bets on one impotent director who is really suited more as a cinematographer. This is WB's one shot at Justice League, they cannot let this idiot do whatever he wants FFS!

  Nope, the only good theme was WW. It's unbelievable that this thing came from the same guy who made epic scores of Man of Steel and TDK trilogy. It was a decent piece, but not as memorable and goose bumpy as his dark knight score

While the news is sad to hear, I respect and understand his decision to retire. Hans has done an amazing job providing scores for The Dark Knight trilogy, and now for the recent Superman Films, (MOS, BVS). I'm thankful for the work he has done, the team he collaborated with, and maybe, just maybe, he'll come back for one more merry go round.
But if not, I'm still thankful for all he has done. Thank you for greatness Hans!

If i were to suggest a replacement, Christopher Drake comes to mind. He's composed the music for several animated Batman and Justice League movies and the Arkham games, so he definitely knows how to capture the sound of those characters. Even if he collaborates with another person it could work out well. Just a thought :)

He has done Batman, twice. Superman. And Spider-Man. He basically did the holy trinity of superheroes. He held so much respect of Nolan and his work on the Batman Trilogy he was apprehensive to even do BvS. I respect him for doing it. He accomplished wonders with Superman's theme and I hope it sticks around for the rest of the DCEU. Why? Because a subtlety of a few notes when expressing a God-like, all powerful figure like Superman is genius.
Mr. Zimmer, you will be missed, but I would have been even more devestated if he said, "I am officially retiring from scoring FILMS."
We get him for Dunkirk and Inferno. I cannot wait to see what Hans has in store for us.

Junkie XL was great so it's promising moving forward. It makes total sense that he's worn on the genre (some critics panned his score for BVS which I still don't get). Thanks for everything Mr. Zimmer! I'll never forget the Dark Knight soundtrack, it was the first movie soundtrack I ever purchased.

I kinda have to agree. It was a great score, don't get me wrong.
But, specifically, the Batmobile chase scene lacked a certain adrenaline-pumping/goosebumps-inducing score. I just wasn't feeling it right then. I kept remembering TDKR's Batpod chase and how epic the music was along it.
I totally understanding how grueling the creative process must be for these guys. Take a normal rock band. Think about when they hit it big with an album. It then becomes almost impossible to reproduce the greatness of that album in another work. It's the same with guys like Zimmer. He scored a homerun with TDK Trilogy. MoS was actually great also. I can totally understand he simply doesn't have anything left in him.
JunkieXL was epic in Mad Max. I wouldn't mind at all him taking over completely for JL.

      Honoustly, I had the same thing. Junkie XL's scores are sometimes great, sometimes a bit mediocre to me. I loved Deadpool and Mad Max from him, BvsS and his other work like Divergence are a bit 'ehh'. Decent, but not outstanding or moving.

Damn that sucks I really liked the music during the Batman and Superman fight Zimmer did. Especially when Superman was on that Kryptonite, straight up on that Kryptonite, he was on that, straight up on that, he was on that Kryptonite.
