It's no secret that Warner Bros. had a disappointing year at the box office, but they're betting that 2016 will be a lot different with big franchises like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad on the horizon. Jeff Bewkes, CEO and Chairman of Warner Bros.'s parent company Time Warner, shared his excitement today at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference.
"We're really excited about the slate," Bewkes said, adding "Next year we’re going to be shifting more to the very numerous number of big franchise film releases."
Bewkes also hopes that 2017's Wonder Woman will appeal to a large female audience and get them into the theater.
"We think this could bring an under-represented female audience to this genre that frankly has not been served well in the past and that could be exciting," he said.
Warner Bros. beat Marvel by bringing a solo female superhero to the big screen, and it will be interesting to see how they plan to target the "under-represented female audience" that Bewkes was referring to today. Perhaps we'll see some new marketing ideas that typically wouldn't be associated with the male dominated superhero genre.
