Margot Robbie talks 'Suicide Squad', says she didn't have to audition for Harley Quinn (video)

MTV's Josh Horowitz caught up with Margot Robbie while she was promoting her new movie Focus, but naturally, Suicide Squad came up as well. When asked what the audition process was like, Robbie revealed that she didn't even need to audition for the role of Harley Quinn! "I actually got offered this one, I didn't audition, which is a real step up as an actor when you can get offered things," Robbie said.

Robbie said that Harley Quinn and Deadshot have a lot of scenes together in Suicide Squad. Luckily, Deadshot is being played by Will Smith, Robbie's Focus co-star. From the trailers, it looks like they'll have great chemistry together.

Robbie also explained that Suicide Squad will be more like The Dark Knight in terms of being grounded in reality, and less fantastical like The Avengers. “I think on a scale of like, ‘Dark Knight’ is here and ‘Avengers’ is here, I think it’s more on the ‘Dark Knight’ side of things,” she said.

This casting is insane, it's like Harley Quinn just walked right out the page/series/games. Even the looks she gives here, it's just like, I can barely believe it. Her and Jared might turn out to be the best cb casting ever, apart from Cavill.

Third most anticipated film, easily. (Star Wars remains nr 1 for me, 2nd one needs no mention.)

Cavill is insanely similar to Superman the way he is in the comics. It looks as if he was riped right out of the page! I loved that casting the minute I heard of it!
I was skeptical about Affleck, but after seeing that first picture, my doubts vanished! He looks huge!
The others are great too!

  Glad there are comment section heroes who justly give Cavill the physical and acting creds he deserves. Plus he's a WoW nerd, so he feels like one of us.
  Snyder knows what he's doing in terms of casting--casting actors who are both creepily identical to the comic characters, solid in terms of acting prowess, and are often unknown or low key in Hollywood. A particular reboot over at Fox should take some notes...

From someone like David Ayer, I'm not surprised. His movies have always been grounded and hardcore. I doubt that he will fuck it up like Sabotage as well, since the reason that movie was so bad was because of Skip Woods...

Normally I think it can be a bad idea when you cast an actor/actress in a comic book role without auditioning.. but I have ZERO problems here. She was born for the role. I really can't think of anyone else. She is perfect. I seriously hope we see her in a Batman film.

Actually Cara also looks like a 100% match for Harley Quinn's look she even has the same type of behaviour or traits in real life. But yeah I can understand why she didn't get that role. But even Enchantress is a very demanding role for an actress.

  I can see how people would have liked her for the role. But I just don't see her having the presence required. I feel that Robbie has more presence and charisma to play Harley. When fans started fan casting Cara as Harley, I did not like it. However, I love her casting as Enchantress. It will be demanding but I think she will knock it out of the park!

I feel like they were simply talking in terms of the tone. Probably darker and more real-world-like rather than the bright and saturated avengers with the jokes. I'm positive there will be humor in SS, but probably more twisted humor, which I can't wait for.

I was hoping they could get it to have the enjoyability of Pulp Fiction and other Quinton Tarantino films. It might be overly serious and lack a higher plan like Christopher Nolan's criminals where they're more like middle eastern terrorists with him. It's good to develop the realism so that they can bring part of that into the superhero films so that it's not overly campy like DC is known for. DC didn't become campy until the mid 1960s with Adam West and the Batman TV show, and before that they had adult writing based on real mafia crimes where there was death. In the 1980s and 1990s they brought a lot of adult writing back into the DC series, especially Batman. Joss Whedon has had some good experience to bring that realism into Marvel films with superheroes. With Harley Quinn there could be something like she's having issues with Joker and leaning towards Deadshot, but they still need to develop the relationship with Joker because it was very dynamic in storytelling. You can't really take their characters seriously if they ditch the relationship completely. There could still be some love there but issues, they try to kill eachother and separate, and then they get back together like always. But she's also trying something different with Deadshot instead of staying the same. What's cool about Joker is you could find him highly entertaining and get drawn into him even though he doesn't have any super powers in the really good Batman stories. They need that writing creativity so that they can be more creative with the villains, and use the powerful villains in perspective. That can help to make a cooler Legion of Doom who are the very powerful supervillain team, that's much different than the non-powered Suicide Squad. Villains without powers can also be very dangerous to where it's like a chess game and the pieces have got to be used right. A dynamic of DC is that there's a lot of wit too, where it's not just the clash and battle. There's a lot of things to figure out to where it's a puzzle. You would get kind of tired of Christopher Nolan's vision if you realized it's just guys with guns and dynamite, and he copied that for 3 movies in a row. It was basically Batman Begins 2 other times, and the first time was the best. Joker always adds some fun to it so it won't be so boring, and Christopher Nolan didn't really capture that. Michael Bay does the same thing. I can also see Christopher Nolan improving in new directions now that he's working with a team of other directors and writers, instead of it being just himself. Michael Bay sticks to himself to where his writing is lacking that but he can still be very original in a lot of ways. So can Christopher Nolan outside of the Batman films.

When I think of this SS movie, I think Ocean's 11 meets the Usual Suspects. Both movies are grounded in a real world tonality... but both movies get a little crazy.

    Mel Gibson was terrible. Antonio Banderas delivered a career-killing performance as a bumbling fool to Barney Ross. And there was a scene copied from The Dark Knight (spoiler alert). Toning down the film from R of the predecessors to PG-13 backfired and hurt it a lot.

      Actually this scene I remember now is a better TDK rip-off: The video which Stonebanks sends to Ross reminds one of the video which The Joker releases in which he tortures and kills his victim in The Dark Knight.

It might very well be. I also think that this is the movie that's going to determine the success or failure of the DCCU. There's very little chance that BvS won't be successful. Even if it's bad (and I don't think it will!), it will be successful. Suicide Squad will be the real test. If it's great and a hit, then the DCCU will be on a roll!
