It's no secret that "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller will have a big influence on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Not only is it a great Batman vs. Superman story, it also happens to be a personal favorite of director Zack Snyder's. He even used a quote from the book when he introduced the movie to fans at Comic-Con last year.

Harry Lennix will reprise his role of General Swanwick in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here's what he had to say about the movie in a new interview with Moviefone:

We have to ask: Can you tell us anything about "Batman v Superman"?
"Batman v Superman" ... [Laughs] Well, no. Anybody who's a fan of the '86 graphic novel "The Dark Knight Returns," I think will be well pleased by that. This is a historic event. Clearly, Zack Snyder is on the cutting edge of directing movies of this scope and scale. I think you can depend on the acting -- you've got Amy Adams, of course. You've got Henry [Cavill]. I don't think there are any surprises with regard to that. What will happen remains to be seen. I'd probably wind up in a box some place.

We're not getting a straight up adaptation of "The Dark Knight Returns", but we'll definitely see it influence Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In fact, we already have with the first photo of Ben Affleck as Batman.

    This reminds me of something I wanted to know for years...
    Does Nolan's Batman need his mouth open so he can breathe or he designed the mask so his lips would be plooshed out like a momma kisser?

      I laughed when you said that his lips would be plooshed out like a momma kisser because it reminded me of this. I think this gives an almost too accurate portrayal of Nolan's Batman.

        I like the look of the initial suit. I thought the second one was too...busy. I know it was designed to look more like a knight's armor, but there just seemed to be unnecessary ornamental designs.

        Sure, if you look at the suit, its not smooth like the initial suit. I understand its suppose to be in more pieces to be lighter weight (though it was actually heavier) & allow more movement. I also know that many wealthy men in the age of knights had special detailing & ornamenting engraved into their suits of armor, but I just found it too much. The initial suit just seemed more simple & basic.
        As my old history teacher use to say: stick with the KISS method - Keep It Simple Stupid (or Students).

        I too prefer the Begins suit based on aesthetics. The Dark Knight suit is more functional though, it's also made of the type of materials it's supposed to look like. In contrast the begins suit was just foam rubber.

      To answer your question: Bale just has lips like that, period. I think because of the smaller mouth opening of this mask, it probably did further emphasis this, though.

  Precisely. I recall them saying something about using only "v", and not " vs", in the title, because "vs" is too confrontational or something. Saying it's not literally 'versus'.

We all know that Batman is going to win the fight. The great challenge for Snyder now is to make his victory spectacular and sensible. He can't go with the DKR victory because that one was cheap.
....I don't like the DKR.

    That was also while he was promoting Man of Steel, before he even knew Batman would be in the sequel. Of course Batman is going to win at least one of the fights! You can't go off of Snyder's comments in 2012, before he even knew Batman v Superman existed. He was promoting a Superman movie.

      No, Snyder confirmed they didn't bring up the idea of Batman until after Man of Steel came out when they were brainstorming about what to do next. He said the Wayne satellite was a tribute to Christopher Nolan (who wrote some of Man of Steel and produced it).

      I still stand on the fact that WB/DC will never let Superman lose to Batman especially on the big screen. If they have 2 fights, Batman will lose both but he will look more badass. They will continue to tease fans that maybe it will happen in future movies but Batman is NOT beating Superman anytime soon. It has never happened in Canon, it won't happen on the big screen. The only things being pulled from TDKR is that Batman and the conflict. The Superman is MOS Superman who is very assertive. The plot twist here is Superman won't hold back!! lol..Batman will be badass as hell though...

  Theirs not going to be a "Victor" because The battle or confrontation between them is not a fight meant to be "Won" its going to be a fight of opposing views that will get resolved in the fight most likely but I doubt they will claim that either one of the two is the stand out winner.

  WB/DC won't let that happen. The fight won't be a draw either. Bats will look badass and crazy as hell going against Supes, but Supes will put him in his place. That's the only way both can look awesome. Anyother way is degrading Superman to be honest. He's going to be going against doomsday maybe Darkseid. Batman can't beat Supes then struggle to keep his villains in check, doesn't make sense.

I just want a pissed off Batman/Bruce Wayne who gives zero shits. There were two pictures of Ben during a scene and he's on a phone and for whatever reason THAT picture just radiated a pissed off Bruce Wayne. And because of that I'm excited.

    Chris, have you got any sources that BvS is partially being shot with IMAX camera's? I read somewhere that JJ uses three for Star Wars VII and Snyder one for BvS… I REALLY hope that's true. Simply because I cannot wait to sees Episode VII being shot with so many IMAX camera's and to see the biggest and most beautiful shots of BvS shot in IMAX! I think Snyder can do glorious things with that.
    So IF he really uses 15/70mm IMAX for it, I hope he got some big sequences with non-stop IMAX! It doesn't get any better than that. Here's hoping for a JLA film with at least the entire third act shot in IMAX :D :D :D

      It's hard to shoot an entire film in imax, because it's very time limiting. That's the reason TDKR was only 2 hours 45 I believe.

        TDKR had 72 minutes of IMAX shot footage which is a tremendous amount. The reason it was max 2 hours and 45 minutes was because real IMAX theaters can't run films longer than that.

    You basically just nailed my #1 issue with The Dark Knight trilogy! From the moment he returns to Gotham in Begins and "dies" at the very end of Rises, he was Batman for roughly what you said: 1.5 years. I was totally fine with the realistic tone, and I was even fine with Bruce getting the happy ending; However, the fact that he was Batman for only a year and a half (give or take) really pissed me off. It just didn't feel right at all! I still loved the movies, but that aspect always really bothered me.

      I'm not one to pole squat Nolan, but the short duration of the Batman fits perfectly with his realistic take, it was more of a Batman "incident" rather than a career in vigilantism.

      It makes sense in the context of the story. The human body can only sustain so much abuse on a regular basis before the wear & tear take an effect. That 18 months could be the equivalent of an NFL player's 10 year career.

  I think it will be definitive. They have to establish their roles. One is the brains and one is the big gun & heart. This isn't Thor vs Ironman- Marvel played that obviously safe in my opinion. From MOS, WB/DC is playing raw. If it's a draw or Batman wins, it makes superman look like a pussy. Some People will still say Batman won even if Superman snaps his neck, people will even say he won just for standing up to him. I think there will be clear victory. There has to be.

    That's a stupid thing to say, Batman needed the help of Green Arrow and Carrie Kelley, not to mention an elaborate ruse that included faking his own death while Superman was already recovering from the kryptonite arrow.

      Aside from being controlled by Max Lord, what other issue or storyline did Kent beat Batman in those various occasions?
      And I think people often overlook an important detail; if Kent doesn't hold back, then he could beat/crush Batman...but why in that same scenario does Batman have to hold back? In this scenario where Kent is crossing the line, why can't Batman.
      In the same scenario, Batman could kidnap Lois, keeping her in a lead line metal freight container buried underground. Kent tears it open to find Lois, Batman, & a chunk of gold Kryptonite. With Kent's powers gone, Batman easily kicks his ass, then fills the container with concrete, killing both Kent & the only witness.
      Victory: Batman.

        Just in the 1st 2 issues of JL N52 Superman beat the crap out of both Batman and Lantern, Batman had to stop him by whispering his name.
        In Justice he KOd Batman with a single punch.
        There are countless examples of Superman owning Batman, in and out of canon, while Batman has never beat Superman, not even out of canon, not Hush nor TDKR count as victories.
        That scenario makes no sense, why would Batman kidnap Lois, that's completely removing the characterization from Batman, if we decide to remove the morals and characterization, to leave only physical power, intelligence and resources of both Supes and Bats wanting to kill each other, Batman hasn't got a chance.
        -Lobotomy from long distance.
        -Freezing him to death.
        -A punch.
        -Tackling/punching him to space.
        .... And many more.
        Seriously what can Batman do that Supes can't laugh at?
        This is the guy who beat Flash, the fastest man alive, with his index finger, how can Batman even hope to see him, hear him, much less touch him or use a kryptonite weapon on him?
        Batman himself said Superman would crush him in the blink of an eye, what more proof do you need?

        Yup, serious. I don't read N52 stuff & I haven't read the Justice mini-series yet (I'm about 5 books & TPB away from it). I think there's a blurring of the lines here; Batman never beat Kent, but Kent has beaten Batman? Define "beat"?
        What do you mean kidnapping Lois doesn't make sense? She's the bait for the trap. Knowing Lois is taken would have Kent go after Batman directly, rather then fry him from the sky. Lead lining the container prevents Kent from seeing what's inside.
        How's this one; Kent is vulnerable to magic. Batman goes against his normal methods (as apparently Kent is doing) & learns enough magic to weaken him.
        In both scenarios, unless Kent breaks his moral compass, THEN immediately kills Batman, there's time for Batman to strike & get the upper hand.
        In a straight fight, yes, Kent has the heavy advantage...but since when is Batman not a dirty fighter? Kent's strengths can easily be used against them. And gold Kryptonite doesn't have to touch him, just be close enough to be exposed to him. Once done, he's no longer a threat to anyone.

        Now that I remember, in Batman/Superman in the new 52 Superman (the young version) also beat the crap out of Batman in Smallville, seriously, there are no shortage of examples.
        Kidnapping Lois doesn't make sense, because:
        a) If Batman was planning to hurt Lois as a threat to Superman, then that means the morals and characterizations are off, and that puts us in the previous scenario I told you where Superman has every advantage without morals or characterization.
        b) If there is characterization and morals, then Superman would know for a FACT that Batman isn't planning on harming Lois at all, it's an obvious bluff, so he in fact has no reason to worry about Lois, then he can proceed to fuck Batman over.
        The reason I mentioned the Flash (who is in fact a lot faster than Superman) is because superman MANAGED to KOd the fastest man alive, how does Batman intend to keep up with something that's so fast he can't hope to see or hear?
        Batman does not have a Phantom Zone projector, any kind of kryptonian technology is off limits to anyone who isn't Superman, that has been well established.
        Even if he had one, he still needs to put SUperman in it, and then we go back to the usual Superman's to fast, powerful and intelligent to be fooled like that.
        Batman has zero chance, period.

        The Superman in this movie has no fortress to give, no Kryptonion technology for Batman to somehow steal and study (how does that work does Batman go to Superman's fortress and says "give me all of your alien shit so I can study it") and Batman in this film (or in any comics) wouldn't kidnap Lois and if Batman doesn't kill, Superman would realize he's just bluffing and if he doesn't realize it because they don't know each other, then Supermen should be like I don't know anything about him so I have to be strong because I'm sure "what to expect, I'm not sure if he'll kill Lois and I'm angry at him for kidnapping my girlfriend so I should beat him up a little"

        And Batman demonstrated his fluency with Kryptonian culture when Kara came to Earth.
        And I'm not buying any time the JLA encounters alien tech Batman isn't studying it. I don't believe Batman has to ask anyone to do so.

        I agree, with a talentless writer who just tries to square these two off against each other, no holds barred, like gladiators in an arena then the Bat gets squished.
        Now, with a competent writer many a scenario can take place to even the odds.
        Look at it like this.
        In MoS they demonstrated the power of Superman.
        In BvS they need to demonstrate the intelligence of Batman, while not diminishing the power of Superman.
        Otherwise neither belong on the Justice League, it's a tough task. If Batman looks stupid or Superman looks weak it doesn't bode well for the future of the DCCU.
        My money is on play the Zod ending into this story. Batman uses Superman's grief and unwillingness to go all out to his advantage. Also, let's not forget to add Wonder Woman into the equation, there is a million ways she could sway this battle in either direction.

        Nobody said Batman is holding back. Batman fights his best in fights against people stronger than him (in other words not holding back) but even with Kryptonite, Red Sun radiation and magic, with Superman fighting his best he'll crush Batman

I hope not. I know we want Batman to win, heck I want him to win; but alone against Superman he loses. Unless Superman holds back..he loses. If solo Batman wins against against a Superman who's not holding back; it doesn't bold well for Superman against tougher villains in the future.
What I don't get is why Batman and Superman are even fighting.The history in DKR hasn't even happened, nor can the back story be the same. Unless Batman versus Superman is not exactly what we've been led to believe; I'm still not sure how the DKR plot story fits here.

      Fill the sky with gold Kryptonite dust like you're sprinkling a cloud to make rain. The sky just became a no fly zone for Kent, despite how fast he'd fly through it.

  What Snyder is pulling from DKR is "Batman" not the story. It's pretty much DKR Batman vs MOS Superman. Snyder already said they aren't adapting or basing the movie on DKR because this is a different Superman. MOS Superman is younger and will fight. I doubt Supes will "hold back" in this movie. Batman and Superman will be at their absolute best I hope. I'm sure there will be an epic battle but there will also be debates regarding their ideals

      It can't be Year One. Batman was a freakin' rookie in that storyline. The Dark Knight Returns captured the complete essence of the character.         I'd put the Tower of Babel interpretation on my list ahead of DKR.

Tower of Babel was a great story. It highlighted Batman's paranoia, and his ability to plan for every scenario.         A lot of people make this mistake. The Dark Knight Returns is either an Imaginary Story or the coda to the pre-Crisis Batman's timeline. Year One is the official canon beginning of the post-Crisis Batman continuity. I can't say what happens in the New 52.

1) ok guys let's think little logical here, everyone knows superman can destroy and immobilize batman in thousand different ways even before batman takes a breath, but unlucky for the boy scout, batman knows that he can get destroyed by him, so you people really think batman would be idiotic enough to go toe to toe with superman without proper resources and planning and i am not saying batman will surely win if he is properly equipped and prepared for a fight but the chances on dark knight's side is higher. so as to speak you people remember foara and and Nam-ek right, those people mopped the floor with superman, and those guys didn't even have their yellow sun exposed kryptonian powers when doing that, all that strength, durability and reflexes were a part of their battle armor combined with their martial arts, so it is already proven that with a powerful enough armor it is possible to engage and hurt superman, but lately batman is all about winning even through dirty ways, so i am sure kryptonite will be used during this fight,
2) secondly it is damn easy for the director and writer to make a scene where superman wins over batman, but it would be a genuine difficulty for them to create a fight sequence which makes batman win over superman, and if zack finds a credible enough idea behind how batman wins that would make the fight and the movie even more epic, right. so now tell me who's gonna win the fight.

I think Bats will be the aggressor so Superman can play defense, that's the only way the fight can last longer than 10 seconds. "Realistically", If Superman decides to actually take Bats down, he will in 5 seconds. WB/DC will never let Batman beat Supes especially not in a live action movie. There's a power hierarchy in DC and they will stick to that. There's a reason Batman's villains are street thugs. There's a reason he stand beside Supes.         1) Batman villains are street thugs/criminals. They are feared in GOTHAM, no where else. There is a reason Batman is restricts himself to Gotham. There is also a reason why when Batman and superman are involved, they go with superman's villains. Batman villains only pose a threat to Gotham. Batman protects GOTHAM not earth.

        green lantern, superman and flash have entered gotham once, before the creation of justice league, and from then they never did that again, it was only under batman's direct word that GL and Supes came was to return some of the villains to arkham asylum. so that means only if batman instructs them to enter gotham, they do other wise they never do. there are 3 reasons.
        1) they don't want to piss batman off
        2) they have other works
        3) they are genuinely afraid of the kind of psychopaths and evil that roams gotham.

        two points to add in support of harish (not that i actually care about this argument, but what the heck):
        during No Man's Land, when the city collapsed and Supes came to help, Batman told him to bugger off. and he did. because even Superman listens to Batman and because Gotham is Batman's city.
        secondly, there is no one in the canon DCU that isn't afraid of the Joker. and even if they claim they aren't at first, they tend to get schooled really quick.

    I believe I saw that ages ago, around the same time they announced Fishburne, Adams, Diane Lane, etc. I think the fact that Lennox was asked to read the piece at SDCC last year was a hint, though.... they wouldn't do that and then cut him out of the film.

    Those of us who were around when the book was coming out just called it "[The] Dark Knight" at the time. If you look at some of the DC covers of the period, in the box where the UPC symbol went on newsstand copies one of the recurring slogans was "How will THE DARK KNIGHT end?".         I'm getting the impression that, for the majority of posters here, their impression of Batman comes from the Nolan movies, the Arkham games, and maybe New52, and everything else is "old". Not to imply that we don't have great discussions here, of course, because we do.

        Haha, that's exactly the impression I have gotten. When some people talk about Court of Owls or Hush as good stories for a solo Batman movie & I throw out there Ten Nights of the Beast, Venom, Prey, & A Lonely Place of Dying instead, they seem to have no idea what I'm referencing.

  No. If someone says "the Dark Knight," the only question I've follow up with is "do you mean Batman or the movie?" Normally in the context of how the Dark Knight is being used, I know what the person is referencing.

      No need. I've never confused it with DKR. I've only actually ever heard that mini-series referenced as "Dark Knight Returns." That's why is don't ask about it when someone states "The Dark Knight."
