First trailer for 'Son of Batman', WB's next animated movie (video)

Warner Bros. announced Son of Batman today, their next animated movie. The movie is based on "Batman and Son" by Grant Morrison. The voice cast features Jason O'Mara as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Stuart Allan as Damian, Morena Baccarin as Damian's mother Talia, Giancarlo Esposito as Ra's Al Ghul,David McCallum as Alfred, Xander Berkeley as Kirk Langstrom (aka Man-Bat), and Thomas Gibson as Deathstroke.

Son of Batman will be available later this spring and premiere at WonderCon over Easter weekend in Anaheim, California. Check out the trailer above for now, and stay tuned to Batman News for all the latest!

This looks to be mashing the story with Deathstroke from Batman and Robin with Batman and Son, and it looks as if it will work.

Boy, DC is seriously marketing Deathstroke these days (Arrow, Injustice Gods Among Us, Arkham Origins, a Deathstroke movie supposedly in development, now Son of Batman). Can't say I've got any problems with that! One of my very favorite characters.

  He was cool, but they really didn't delve to deep into his character for me to say he was "awesome" in Origins. He was just there to fight Batman that's it. I wish they got into his psychology like they did Batman, Alfred, Gordon, and Joker.
  As far as the boss fight goes, it was frustrating but not in a good way. I was extremely frustrated during the Mr. Freeze fight in Arkham City, but I still enjoyed every moment. Playing it again brings me joy.
  With Deathstroke, it was too slow. It took forever. He would stand there with Batman right in front of his face and not do anything for five seconds Why couldn't they make the fight more dynamic? Fight Deathstroke just like how he fights in the challenge modes, quick with all sorts of gadgets. Maybe multiple levels instead of the EXACT arena that you "fought" Electrocutioner in. Bland.
  What would have made it more entertaining and visually more captivating is if they used the outside of the ship with all those shipping crates, AND this would have matched up with the advertisement for Arkham Origins which showed the two fighting outside, in the snow, around a shipping yard. As it is, the advertisement contradicts the events of the game.

Actually, he's a great voice for Batman. As much as I love Kevin Conroy, I know he can't be every Batman, all the time, forever. The same as how Bruce Wayne can't always be Batman. WB Montreal knew this, Young Justice knew this, and WB Animation knows this. Batman needs a new consistent character voice. Jason O'Mara is actually a good runner up in my opinion. He has a dark voice, and for a large amount of the time, his lines are emotionless. That's how Batman is. He doesn't show his emotions easily, but sometimes they get the better of him, and when Batman needs emotion, Jason can pull it off. He's on par with Bruce Greenwood (Under the Red Hood/Young Justice), and way better than Roger Craig Smith (he was good for the Arkham franchise, but only that, and only GOOD). Jason is a good Batman, he's to Kevin what Nightwing is to Batman, a great contestant for the role.

Looks cool! All these movies look the same though. I wish they would experiment with the artwork more but I guess they are trying to make them interconnected with the New 52. Deathstroke looks the exact same as he did in THE FLASHPOINT PARADOX animated film.

And Deathstroke is getting a lot of exposure with the INJUSTICE and ARKHAM ORIGINS games, as well as animated films.

Spiderman had a TV movie in 1977.
Captain America had movies in 1944 and 1979.
Wonder Woman had a TV movie in 1974.
Flash and Green Lantern appeared in the Legends of the Superheroes TV movie in 1979.

starting to get used to the new batman voice he sounds alot better in this than the justice league footage shown, i wish they would also do classic graphic novel stories of batman besides new 52 using conroy, love to see long halloween with the BTAS cast, hush sticking with jim lee art, even knightfall. It would also be cool if they did an animation of the injustice year 1 digital comics using the same cast from the game.

He was also my second pick too, but this guy doesn't sound AWFUL and may be decent enough if the rest of the stuff sounds like this trailer, Conroy will always be THE voice for me though.But you are right that he can't do it always and forever - however unfortunate that truth may be. I think most of the folks who first heard him doing TAS will always hold him as #1 because he was really the FIRST one to get it right without the listener ever losing that suspension of disbelief that happens when someone is ALMOST there but just not quite (I'm looking at YOU, Peter Weller... )
At least this guy doesn't sound like he's trying to talk through a mouthful of gravel.
The only bone I really have to pick with the trailer is the way the characters are styled in the face/head region. I had this same issue with "The Batman" cartoon which ran from 2004- 2008, on the Saturday morning television block Kids' WB. It always felt less sophisticated in the coloration and design and more "for kids" than the film noire original TAS stuff that I felt was so perfect. It's got that sort of anime-flavor to it which is almost like a caricature, and even though I myself am half Chinese, I am bothered by a Bruce Wayne that looks too much like a Bruce Lee. The styling of the face out of the cowl and the way that his son is drawn makes them look a little bit too ethnic for my tastes, I see Korean instead of Caucasian, and that just isn't what I am familiar with the Bat to be, Maybe because he is also supposed to have something of an imposing stature and that is not typical of Asian physique, nor is the traditionally square jaw that Bruce should have.

Damian was a lot more capable in the comic books because of how he was raised. They dumbed him down. Would Deathstroke be able to beat Talia? I don't know if he was ever able to do anything like this in the comic books. I doubt it, atleast not at the League of Assassins. It could be possible if she was away from them. They could make Deathstroke a lot tougher than the comics. If Bane used weapons then Deathstroke wouldn't stand a chance. That or Kingsnake was more of the type to use weapons. That is the flaw of what I've seen with Bane is that he doesn't use weapons, and I don't know if he used weapons in the later comic book stories after meeting his dad Sir Edmund Dorrance. If you know how to use them guns give you a great advantage, especially if you know stealth and how to maneuver/plan in combat situations. Damian beheaded a veteran adult ninja in mid air during a somersault when he was 9 years old, and he had killed since he was 6 years old or younger in the comic books. I think Damian had beheaded the ninja from a higher distance. Batman gained a lot more confidence after disciplining Damian because he became more in tune with his nature as a father so his instincts kicked in. This made him better because it added more fundamental belief to his mind structure right away which is inherent, and then with his choices he built on that. He was also challenged by Damian because of how dangerous Damian was, and Batman was straightforward and chose to be strong being that Damian threatened Robin's life. Batman chose the harder path in choosing to take on and discipline Damian. Damian needed the strong father figure for this. It made Batman a lot stronger. Batman had to use his instincts, wisdom, understanding, and his nature when dealing with Damian. If you saw what people can accomplish at a young age Damian is easily possible. He got that killing nature from the Al Ghul side of the family which was passed down through genetics for many generations. His mom also altered his genetic setup to be suited towards that lifestyle which the technology exists to do that. The League of Assassins are very rich. They copied Jason Todd and Terry McGinnis for that animated movie version of Damian and there was a cultural upbringing Damian was raised into that made him much different. For certain reasons I liked that animated movie version of Talia and for other reasons I didn't. In ways it didn't fit her for who she is supposed to be. I thought TDKR Talia was good in ways, but they would have to develop her more in other ways to make a lot more sense of her character if they were going to take her to that level in future movies. The Deathstroke angle is neat, and maybe they made him a lot more effective.

Deathstroke uses armed weapons and so he has that leverage over Talia and the League of Assassins. Talia didn't let Damian go see his dad until he could beat her. Talia went all out against Damian, and Talia has challenged Batman one on one in the mid point of Batman's career. Batman has gotten much better later in his career around his 40s, and he's much better than he was before, during, and after Knightfall.

Damian Wayne gave Tim Drake a challenge when Damian Wayne was just 9 years old or so. That or he gave Nightwing a challenge, I can't remember. Nightwing is a lot better than Tim Drake. I think that Red Hood and Nightwing are equal, or Red Hood has an edge over Nightwing. But Red Hood only has temporary motivation and so without that edge he's not consistent like Nightwing. That's also because Jason Todd grew up an intelligent criminal, and so he's a lot stronger when he chooses the criminal lifestyle but he was against the criminals while being criminal himself. He still helped some of the criminals but only to obtain his goals. He was teeter tottering but he would still be in charge if he did more with it. There's no purpose to having other people with him so he did it by himself. If he did gain other people with him they would have been more intelligent and young. He could get some older more intelligent people. He would have his ways of gathering more information depending on what he did, who knows what level he would take it to and how he would do it. He has to justify it in that he's angry at his intelligent criminal parents but also loved them which is why he doesn't side with the other criminals and is a different type of criminal. Azbat was way better than both of them, but Azbat had that suit and he had to have the subliminal programming to be that effective. Pound for pound Bruce Wayne at his prime is better than Azbat, but Bruce Wayne would need a special suit. Not necessarily, it depends on the circumstances and Bruce Wayne's tools. Bruce Wayne took down a super powered being in the Red Hood storyline, and some other very powerful people too. Then he also faced off against Red Hood. Batman can beat Azbat without a special suit because of the psychological factor. He might stand a better chance outside of his suit because Azbat would register his face. Azbat didn't try as hard against Bruce Wayne in their faceoff because he was fighting his subliminal programming. That and the programming had to become a lot stronger for Azbat to try to kill Bruce Wayne, but that also made Azbat a lot less rational because Azbat would otherwise fight it. Azbat found no objection to killing off the criminals however so he didn't really have to fight the subliminal programming against them.

      Azbat is interesting because he kills but he's got to be put into the right storyline. He does it with a cool robot suit and top of the line technology and resources. He uses bullets and missiles. He would be good in a Bane related story of a Black Hawk Down like scenario. The stories of League of Assassins and The Sacred Order of Saint Dumas are very interesting if they're done right. He's different than just another Robin. It adds new dynamic and writing to the Batman mythos instead of the same old thing over and over again.

  What the Hell are you talking about? I'm comparing Damian to the other Robins. I'm talking about the different characteristics of the other Robins. I was also talking about how Damian and Talia seemed different in the comic books. I'm going by what I read in the comic books. That's on topic. Damian is the child in the video and I'm comparing my impression of the movie version to the comic book version, and then putting in perspective his comparable strengths, weaknesses, and characteristics to the other Robins.

I am not a big Damian Wayne fan or Grant Morrison fan in general (though I have enjoyed some of his work). But, I will watch this movie. Even if the animation looks so-so. Not a fan of the flashpoint paradox-style animation. Loving the spotlight Deathstroke is getting, even if he is randomly being shoehorned into like a million movies and stories that he never took part in (may as well do Judas Contract DC =)). That being said, let's see how it turns out. I am interested to see how the Assault on Arkham movie will be, as well.

Finally, Long Halloween, Hush, Knightfall, Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Earth, Batman and the Monster Men, Killing Joke, Dark Victory, Batman R.I.P......soo many adaptations to do. Let's hope they go with the classics though =)
